Lighthouse Lesson 1
LO: To show our comprehension of the film clip ‘The Lighthouse’.
Pause the film after 40 seconds when we first see the lighthouse keeper at his desk.

• When do you think the story is set?
Pause the film after the candle blows out.
• Does the lighthouse keeper like his neighbours?
• How does the director build the tension in this scene?
• What words do you think the lighthouse keeper would use to describe
the people of the village?
• What do you think the lighthouse keeper would be saying to himself when the lantern at
the top of the lighthouse goes out?
Pause the film after the lighthouse keeper sees the ship.
• How do you think he feels when he sees the ship?
• The lighthouse keeper begins to panic – how can we show through his actions or feelings
this sense of panic?
Pause the film when the lighthouse keeper gets to the bottom of the steps.
• Where do you think he is going?
• Do you think the villagers will help him?

Lighthouse Lesson 2
LO: To recognise the features of a diary.
Grammar Time!
Identify and correct the mistakes in the sentences below:
1) They was all shouting and laughing down there at the tavern.
2) I were so worried, didn’t know what to do.
3) The lamp were broken and them ships wouldn’t see us.
4) I done my best to fix it but it slipped right out of me hands.
5) Then they shown up, God bless em. We done it.
Today we are going to explore the features of a diary. Start by
reading about some of the features of a diary entry.
Date
Often, diary entries will begin with the date on which they were written.
First Person
When you write in the first person, you put yourself inside the writing by describing how you
felt and what you were doing. Use ‘I’, ‘me’ and ‘my’.
Past tense
Diary entries are based on events that have already happened, so we write them in past
tense.
Records events in chronological order
We write the events in the order that they happened. We use time conjunctions, which tell us
when something happened.
Organised into paragraphs
Each new idea or event requires a new paragraph.
Describes feelings
You will write how you feel about what has happened. In a diary, you would expect that
the feelings described are honest ones.
Describes inner thoughts
You might write the thoughts you had at the tome something happened. You might include
in a diary thoughts that you would not say out loid.
Subjective perspective
In a diary entry, everything that is written is the opinion of the author. This might mean it
includes information that is based only on one point of view.
Informal language and colloquialism
You might find that the language in a diary entry is informal or casual.
Rhetorical questions
The author of a diary might ask questions that they do not expect anyone to answer.
Read the following three diary entries. As you read, look for the features and tick when you
have found them.
Lighthouse Lesson 3
LO: To write a diary entry (1).
Today, we are going to begin writing diary entries. We will write the diary of the lighthouse
keeper on the day shown in the film clip. First, make sure you are familiar with the events of
the story.
One of the features of a diary entry is that it is written in chronological order. To help with
that, start by reading each of the sentences on the following page and putting all nine events
into chronological order, from start to finish. You could just list the letters in order or you
could cut out the sentences and then sequence them.
Add a time adverbial, change the verbs to past tense and ensure it is in first person.
Last night, through the darkness, the beaming light rotated inside the lamp room of my lighthouse, illuminating the cliffside and jagged rocks.
