T echnology and laser are his equipment. The Intra Ocular Implant is his speciality. His passion for social service however, we are
sure, will have him implant his love for life and humanity in all.
Aye, aye, we are talking about none other than our own Prez, the one and only Iron Man. An eye surgeon with a yen for farming and aero modelling, he is at his avocations with the same zeal and passion as he is at his vocation, seeing hundreds of patients at his hospital. This active Rotarian has traded 'I' for an 'aye' as he does a lot of charity work. Yet, give him a fast car or a Harley, and he would be off at the speed of light. The secret to his success is of course, his wife
Uma, his very own Pepper Pots, who has taken on all the onerous duties of administration at Uma Eye Clinic, leaving him to focus his laser vision
on the three Ps - patients, plants and planes! A daughter happily married and settled in the US, a medico son, complete the happy picture.
A black belt in Karate, this plane speaker does not hesitate to call a spade a spade. He is passionate about scientific agriculture and the environment, and is a mean foodie too.
Be prepared then, for a year of all things that the eye can see v- the Rotary map will surely focus on lenses with special vision that will reflect Arul's own mission to save the world. And like the Marvel hero, our Iron Man with
the steel grey mane too, loves the good things in life. Don that armour, Rotarians! Iron Man is
powering up for the year ahead - we welcome our own doc superhero in the hot seat!

POLICE AND ITS CRITICS
Mr. Alexander, JPS was introduced as a Police Officer with
remarkable accomplishments and a formidable reputation. He served as a Lecturer in St.
Josephs and Loyola College before joining the Indian Police Service in 1970 by scoring 1st place in
All India ranking. He served the State in various capacities before
becoming Director General.
An avid collector of Writing Pens, Mr. Alexander considers pens to be an extension of himself and proudly mentions that "His Pens have helped record history for 36 years when in service". This was clearly a speech made on
the defensive in light of the recent tragic murder of the young IT professional Swathi. Mr.Alexander sought to highlight, that Policemen these days are living between two sets of critics ... the people on the one hand, and the Government on the other. Neither seem satisfied.
You need only lookatthe developments in the murder case mentioned to realize that what he says is not far from the truth: Prior to the arrest police ineffectivess, lack of a presence in the station, and the threat of suo moto supervision by the High Court hung over the heads of the Police. After the arrest was made all went quiet, and then just yesterday, the accused Ramkumar's lawyer Mr. Ramaraj said there was suspicion that the police had cut his neck, and that Ramkumar was not able to speak properly owing to the wound, Mr. Ramaraj claimed that the suspect was not provided medical and psychological treatment. Hence if police custody is granted, it would endanger Rarnkumar's life, he said. This was reported in the Hindu. For those of us who are guilty of
having a rather jaded view of our Police, one is forced to look at things from
the other point of view. They do have superior officers breathing down their necks, a government critically watching their performance, not to mention the opposition who like proverbial Mother in- law is ever present and ready to find fault. The Police are meant to prevent crimes and detect crimes even though we outnumber them 700 to 1, they are also supposed to maintain law and order, maintain traffic, and so on whilst all the while answering critics, rebutting the press, replying to memos of various commissions, replying to RT! queries, and providing materials to the government to tackle criticism. If one was to step back a bit, one might
argue that Mr.Alexander swung too much in favour of the Police. For instance, it is arguably necessary to have inquiries whenever there is a death in custody or alleged torture in a police station. Mr.Alexander ended by reminding
everyone present that the maintenance of law and order is not the function of the police alone. All of us ordinary Citizens who merrily break queues and park wherever we like, must realise that adherence to the law is the duty of the Opposition, the press, the judiciary and the public. ---it is your duty and mine. And so the next time we see a policeman, he requests us that instead of assuming the worst, we should empathize with his plight, and support him - to the hilt.

Sir Frederick James
Sir Frederick E. James, originally from London, (he was knighted in 1941) was no stranger to Rotary. He had been president of the Rotary Club of Calcutta in 1924-25 and 1925-26. It was his job as Vice President of the United Planters Association of South India, that brought him to Madras - a fortunate move from Rotarv's point of view.
It must have been a great encouragement to Davidson to find another so devoted to the extension of Rotary in India. Sir F. E. James is described as having been 'a man of high character and pleasing personality, a good speaker and, most important of all, he possessed a comprehensive knowledge of Rotary.' .There is no doubt that Davidson could have single-handedly established Rotary in Madras but in this city of 530,000 people, Davidson found one valuable ally: Rtn. Frederick James. Like Davidson, James lived out the then Rotary motto 'He profits most who serves best'. He was a member of the State and Central Legislatures in India for over 20 years. He served as General Secretary of the YMCA, Calcutta, from 1920 to 1928. His tenure in India was Rotarv's gain. The first meeting of the Rotary Club of Madras was held on May 10,1929, at the
Connemara Hotel. The 30 charter members included James and represented the leaders of society and industry. All but three were present at that first meeting. The first President of the Club was Rtn. C.G. Armstrong, Chairman of the Madras Port Trust; the first Secretary was Morton Chance of the Hotel Chain. The Club was chartered on July 19,1929 when all the members were non-Indian but soon after thisRaja Sir. M.A. Muthaiah Chettiar was inducted into the club.
Subsequently, Davidson recommended that Rotary International appoint Frederick James, Honorary Commissioner for Rotary International for the Middle Asia Region. In 1932, James organised the first Convention of Rotary Clubs in India, Burma and Ceylon. The convention was held at Calcutta for what was called 'Provisional District 'I\. It is a matter of pride that the first Director of Rotary International from India, was none other than Frederick James of the Rotary Club of Madras. He served in this post from 1933-34. James added another first to his credit when he became the first Governor of District 89 in 1936-37 and served a second term in 1938-39. The first district conference was also held during his tenure as Governor in 1937. James was also the RI President's representative at various conferences in India.
