  • A NOTE FROM THE STAGE DIRECTOR AND THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

    “Risk is everything” --Signora Naccerelli

Love and growth require risk. In order to love more deeply, we must risk our hearts. In or-der to broaden our perspectives, we must risk the known. In order to step beautifully into the fullness that could be our future, we must risk letting go of the past. Risk often does not come easy and the road to making the leap is often messy and complex; but taking that risk is the toll for the rewards that await us on the other side.

The music follows this nuanced journey of risk: at times seemingly simple melodies are heard on a backdrop of eccentric rhythms and complex harmonies that weave in and out of tension. It is breathtaking. What a brilliant pairing with a story filled with characters nav-igating complex relationships--characters who are sometimes at odds with one another, sometimes at odds with their own ideas of how the world is or should be.

Like the seemingly simple melodies, at first blush one might see this as a story of young, star-crossed lovers. But the backdrop over which their story plays is as complex as the music: three marriages, two families, and all their attendant heartache, heart-fullness, and heartbreak fill in the picture of love in its various stages and forms. At the center of this intricate story is Margeret: a woman, a wife, a mother who finds herself at a precipice of risk deciding if it Is it better to play it safe and continue to protect the life she has built for herself and her family--or is it time to release assumptions and fears to take a risk on a new life for her and give her child a chance at love & marriage with all of its twists and turns?

Like the story, the complexity of the music you will hear is a detailed tapestry that is beau-tiful and passionate. Even when a melody finds a seaming resolution, the chord still leaves a question of the risk involved. At the very end we hear Margaret exclaim, “Love if you can...love, and be loved” as if to say all we really have is that choice. Take the risk.

We are excited to bring this piece back into its original home at the very theatre it began. We hope you fall in love all over again with this story and this music as much as we have. Enjoy Light in the Piazza!

  • A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA

Written by Madeline Virtue, Showtunes Intern

In 2003, Craig Lucas and Adam Guettel developed their musical The Light in the Piazza at the Intiman Theatre, now the Cornish Playhouse in Seattle. The original cast included theatre legend Victoria Clark (as Margaret Johnson), as well as Patti Cohenour (as Signora Naccarelli) and Mark Harelik (Signor Naccarelli), who went on to reprise their roles in the original Broad-way cast in 2005. It’s initial Seattle run was met with rave reviews from local and New York critics alike.

Based on the 1960 novel by Elizabeth Spencer, the musical is set in Florence and Rome in the summer of 1953. Playbill interviewed with Craig Lucas, for who the more lighthearted fairytale style musical was a bit of a departure for. “I have been writing these punishing, angry, tragic plays. I just could not write enough mean, cruel, dark, upsetting things,” Lucas told Playbill Online. “So when Adam brought me this [love story], I kind of thought ‘I don’t know, maybe I’m the wrong guy.’ But it’s been a tremendous joy.”

David-Edward Hughes (One of Showtunes’ founders and a former writer for Talkin’ Broad-way) wrote that, “One can only hope Lucas and Guettel can see not only the production’s present merits, but also look closely at fixing some rather troubling flaws. For even now, this light is one worthy of shining far beyond Seattle.” Which of course, it did. The Light in the Pi-azza premiered on Broadway on April 18th 2005. It went on to tour, and of course has been done at regional and community theatres since, including a run in London’s Royal Festival Hall.

The Light in the Piazza has not been produced locally since its original run in 2003. Showtunes Theatre is bringing the show home right back to its birthplace, The Cornish Play-house - formally The Intiman.

Alex Robinson (Operations and Strategic Development Administrator) is a local performer, director, teaching artist. She has worked as an executive assistant at many differ-ent companies over the past few years: Shadowbox Farms, Raiwasa Private Resort in Fiji, and Concord Technologies. Past notable directing credits include: The Boys from Syracuse (Assistant Director) at Showtunes Theatre Company; Legally Blonde (Director) at Village Theatre KIDSTAGE. She currently teaches at Village Theatre and Duvall Performing Arts. Past notable performance credits include: Junie B. Jones the Musical (Secondstory Repertory); Chicago, Hairspray, and James and The Giant Peach Jr. (Village Theatre KIDSTAGE); and currently Tweenland, a pop-cover band for kids, as well as a performer for Singing for Seniors at NM Entertainment. Thanks to Maggie, Nathan, Matt, and the whole Showtunes family.

Katie Ginther (Showtunes Intern) is currently a sophomore at Western Washington University studying theatre for acting and directing. She has done musical theatre productions in the Seattle area at venues including Raisbeck Hall and Village Theatre Issaquah since she was in high school. She is very excited to join the Showtunes family in its 20th year and is excited to reference this internship in whatever the future holds for her.

Madeline Virtue (Showtunes Intern) is going into her Sophomore year at Western Wash-ington University, where she is studying Acting, Musical Theatre, and Dramatic Writing. While her current experience on the stage is mostly limited to dance, she looks forward to how this opportunity with Showtunes Theatre will help her grow in all avenues of theatre.

  • WELCOME TO SHOWTUNESIf you’re joining us for the first time, Welcome. Thanks for supporting Showtunes. We create concert events where people who love musicals can celebrate that love together.

Showtunes does this by championing the rarely produced gems and underdogs of Broadway so that the full voice of this uniquely American art form can be heard.

What sets Showtunes apart from other theatres in Seattle is that we produce streamlined concert experiences with book in hand, with minimal sets and costumes. This presents audiences with a unique theatrical experience. Every show that makes it to Broadway goes through a process as it gathers investors and support. It has to shine on its own accord from the page and inspires the imagination and the heart without the benefit of full sets, costumes, and the other storytelling elements of a full production. It is in this simpler format where the original magic of any script and score are stored, and we strive to bring to life.

Our cast performs with book in hand to give the performers the opportunity to focus on un-derstanding their characters and building moments during our condensed 30 hour rehearsal process. This short time frame allows us access to the wealth of local performers who have this abbreviated rehearsal and performance schedule available.

TALKBACK & LIBATIONS AFTER THE SHOWPlease join us in the lobby immediately after the show to continue your Showtunes experience with our cast and crew!

One of the most fun things about these rare musicals is to talk about them. What works? What doesn’t? Does it still hold up? We’ll enjoy a short talkback in the lobby with some of the cast and production team.

The bar will stay open (you can pre-order at intermission), and also take photos at our step-and-repeat, sign up for our “Give $20 Challenge, or purchase tickets to our May production of La Cage - all in the lobby!

  • Showtunes thanks The Ruins Event Center for hosting our photo shoot for The Light in the Piazza.
