Light-A-Bulb to Support High Tech Surgical Equipment at VJH · medical equipment or expansions for...

4
For the past twenty-eight years, the VJH Foundation’s annual Light a Bulb campaign has raised more than $4 million to support the purchase of much-needed medical equipment or expansions for our Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Residents of the North Okanagan can be proud of their generosity which has resulted in not just a good hospital, but a great hospital. Government cannot possibly fund every need in health care and if we want the best health care we need to support our Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Last year, donations supported surgical kits that helped to reduce the wait times for hip and knee surgeries. In August, our hospital reached its March 2017 targeted numbers of hip and knee surgeries. What has this meant? Many of our local residents, your friends and loved ones, may have had a hip or knee operation much earlier than had been scheduled. This is thanks to the tools that our community funded through the 2015 Light A Bulb Campaign. Again this year, the Operating Rooms need our attention. There is a vital need for high definition camera heads and control units for minimally invasive surgery in the Operating Rooms at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Dr. Hamish Hwang, VJH General Surgeon described the importance of these camera heads. “These cameras allow us to do cutting-edge endoscopic ‘key-hole’ surgery. This is of great benefit to patients as they have smaller incisions, require fewer days in hospital and have a shorter recovery.” The purchase of the latest endoscopic technology, with its specially designed cameras, allows surgeons to detect and treat medical problems easily. Early diagnosis and treatment of disease is critical to ensuring optimal outcomes for patients. Since modern endoscopy has relatively few risks and delivers detailed images, it has proven incredibly useful in many areas of medicine. New camera heads and control units will be used in general surgery, gynecology, ENT and orthopedic procedures. The end result will be better patient care for North Okanagan residents. This year’s Light a Bulb Campaign Launch will take place Wednesday, November 9th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with KISS FM broadcasting on location at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. VJH Foundation President Elise Allan and VJH staff members will be speaking on-air about the campaign throughout the launch event. Watch for your 2016 Light a Bulb donation brochure in the mail the third week of November or complete the donation form on page three and mail to the Foundation office. You can also visit www.vjhfoundation.org to donate on-line or call the Foundation office at 250.558.1362. Remember, every little bit helps. You can help us light up the tree on top of VJH, making health care better one bulb at a time. SilverStar Mountain’s Annual Emergency Services Day will take place Saturday, January 21, 2017 in support of VJH Foundation. SilverStar will donate $20 from every lift ticket sold that day to raise funds for the VJH Emergency Department. Last year’s event was a tremendous success, raising $15,000 for equipment in the Emergency Department. SilverStar has been an avid supporter of VJH Foundation raising more than $53,000 for vital health care equipment over the last three years. The event will feature demonstrations by nine local emergency services teams taking place through the day. Teams volunteer their time putting on live showcases of their skills and equipment through the day. Ski Docs Program Takes Health Care to New Heights A critical part of SilverStar’s emergency services is the Ski Docs Program which has been in operation for 15 years. Dr. Gavin Smart, Vernon physician and medical director for the program, says the purpose of Ski Docs is to provide physician back up on the mountain for serious medical situations during weekends and holidays. The Ski Docs team comprises 13 members including family and emergency department physicians and specialists who volunteer their time each year for the program. The 2016 season will kick off with a specialized training session to refresh practical knowledge and extrication of patients off the hill. Each physician commits to five volunteer shifts per season. “Of the many incidents requiring medical treatment, the SilverStar Patrol team has saved the lives of five people suffering cardiac arrest on the mountain,” said Dr. Smart. “All were successfully resuscitated, treated and discharged to lead normal lives.” Dr. Smart is also involved with Vernon Search and Rescue (VSAR) as medical director and takes part in the VSAR Helicopter Winch Line Rescue Program. The program was established three years ago in partnership with Emergency Management BC and Wildcat Helicopters. Dr. Smart credits SilverStar Safety and Ski Patrol Director Jeremy Griffiths, an advanced critical care paramedic from the UK, for facilitating the program’s existence. “This type of rescue allows the winch line to drop trained personnel and equipment directly down from the helicopter in rugged terrain where landing would be difficult or impossible,” said Dr. Smart. “VSAR has the only non-military winch line helicopter rescue in the country, and the helicopter has been used successfully to extricate injured skiers at SilverStar in difficult to access terrain.” Dr. Smart can attest to the life-saving benefits of helicopter rescue. Last year, he took part in a dramatic rescue of a snowmobiler experiencing a heart attack stranded in minus 10 degree weather on Hunter’s Range. With the helicopter, the patient was being treated in hospital within two hours of the initial call. “A ground rescue would have taken 12 to 14 hours, and the patient wouldn’t have survived,” said Dr. Smart. Dr. Smart notes the tremendous support from SilverStar’s Director of Operations, Brad Baker, in bringing these remarkable services to the ski hill. “We have an ICU bed, and can run cardiac arrest and major trauma resuscitation. We are equipped to manage just about anything that comes through the door,” he said. Life’s journey can take you in many directions, but when your driving force is a passion for helping others, you are always heading in the right direction. This lifelong lesson began early for Paul Docksteader. Growing up in Vancouver as the only son and eldest child of three, his future seemed set. In his youth, Paul began working in his family’s automotive dealership which had been established in the 1930s by his grandfather. “I started out washing cars and doing lots of odd jobs. Being the owner’s son, I had to work twice as hard to earn my stripes and set an example for others. It was expected of me and I’m grateful for the experience.”In 1984, at age 28, Paul took over the leadership of the business from his father. Applying the lessons learned from his dad - work hard and treat people the way you would want to be treated – earned him the trust and respect of the staff.Over the years, the business grew to a staff of 150. Paul says he was blessed to have a wonderful team. “You are only as good as the people around you.” He also had the opportunity to contribute to his community by supporting charities close to his heart, including care for those with diabetes, breast cancer and health care for kids.In 2008, Paul’s life was signifi cantly impacted with the passing of his father. “He was such a well-loved and respected fi gurehead in our lives and in the family business.” Subsequently, Paul received an offer to buy the business, but declined. “I felt an overwhelming obligation to continue the business in my Dad’s name. I had such an emotional connection to it and a responsibility to our team.” Despite his success in the automotive industry, Paul never considered himself a ‘car guy,’ but more of a people person. Four years later, he was again faced with the diffi cult decision to sell the family business. “It was an incredibly emotional decision,” said Paul. “I felt like I was letting my Dad down.” But with a daughter in Florida, there were no more family members to run the business. After the heart-wrenching decision to sell the company, Paul’s refl ection on his life stirred him to write a book of inspirational verses. It took two years to write, and spurred a profound self-discovery.“I was groomed to be a businessman, but that’s not who I am. I made a shift from corporate to consciousness. For 55 years I was a human doing, now I am human being.” The next phase of Paul’s journey led him to Vernon, where he was attracted to the slower pace of life, allowing him to focus on two of his enduring passions.

“I’ve always loved golf. I enjoy the discipline it teaches and admire the commitment to a game you can never be perfect at. It’s the ultimate honest game. Like life, you call your own penalties on yourself. If you don’t, you are only cheating yourself.”Although he had great success in business, Paul had an underlying dream that he never thought possible. “I had always wanted to have my own Foundation.” With the establishment of the Paul Docksteader Foundation, this fulfi llment of a dream wasn’t the journey’s end, but the beginning of helping the dreams of others come true.In 2015, Paul became involved in the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation Charity Classic as a Gold Sponsor. When the opportunity arose for involvement as a Title Sponsor, he eagerly rose to the occasion. The Paul Docksteader Foundation has committed to a three-year title sponsorship for the tournament. The 2017 Charity Classic will take place next September at Predator Ridge Resort. In the fi rst 7 years the event has netted $1,178,000 which has supported critical care needs at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. The organizing committee has started planning for the 8th Annual Charity Classic event, as the need for life saving medical equipment for our Hospital never goes away. “I want to be a part of good people doing great things. I think good things should be celebrated and recognized,” he said.“There are a million ways to give and one isn’t better than another. Everyone has a role to play. It’s important for people to know what their donation brings to the community and how it helps change others’ lives.”For more information about the Paul Docksteader Foundation, visit www.pauldocksteaderfoundation.ca
