Cowboy Breakfast at The MeadowsOur residents love the annual Cowboy Breakfast at The Meadows. we serve the kind of breakfast that “real cowboys” only dream about...smoked sausage and eggs, biscuits a mile high and stacked pancakes ready for your favorite maple syrup. Live country music sets the mood for “toe tapping” and line dancing, while families, friends, and staff laugh and tell stories. Be sure to saddle up and come to our next Cowboy Breakfast in February 2013!

2012 Senior Games walk A Success!Thank you to everyone who participated in the Texas State Senior Games 2012. Our Meadows resident, Rev. Harris Shinn, carried the ceremonial torch commencing the Games at Brackenridge Park in San Antonio.

“Congratulations on a very professionally executed Senior Games. This was a very positive first experience for me. From my vantage point, everything was very well planned and executed. Your volunteers and staff deserve a bonus for being so very friendly and helpful. They were outstanding.”

~ George Moore Senior Games participant

Spirit of ‘45A special ‘Thank you’ goes out to VITAS for making it possible for the “Times Square Kiss” statue to make a stop at Morningside Ministries at The Manor during its nationwide tour. Our residents, many of whom were wwII Veterans and Spouses of Veterans, were truly moved by this prestigous event.

The replica is a six-foot version of the twenty-foot sculpture in San Diego Harbor. It is now the symbol for Spirit of ’45 Day, a national day of remembrance honor ing the men and women of America’s ‘Greatest Generation’ each year on the second Sunday in August.

Improvements Abound!Morningside Ministries at The Manor has been serving the needs of older adults in the San Antonio community for over 50 years. But have you been to The Manor recently? If you haven’t, you may be surprised. Major renovations have been made that have changed the atmosphere completely. Gone are the white walls, bright lights, and tile floors. In their place are soft colors of paint and wall coverings, wood plank and carpeted flooring, and lighting from lamps and sconces. Due to demand there are newly renovated private and semi-private rooms with plenty of space for family and visitors.

THE MANOR-KAULBACH Morningside Ministries at The Manor-Kaulbach Assisted Living Community just received a major update with fresh paint and new flooring in the

corridors and common areas. There is also the addition of new, larger assisted living rooms and suites that are now available.

At the begining of this year, Morningside Ministries at The Manor col laborated with Oasis of San Antonio

a n d J e f f e r s o n Area Community Outreach for Older Adults to provide continuous learning opportunities as well as community a s s i s t a n c e p rog ra m s . Th e Manor renovated a large space on the first floor of our nursing facility to meet the needs of these two organizations and the members of the community they serve. A rehabilitation department staffed by professionals allows many of our residents to reach their highest functional levels and return to their homes. These renovations and additional services have made a great impact on the community.

yes, The Manor has changed in so many ways, but our core values and our mission, “Caring For Those Who Cared For Us” will never change.

“I started work at Morningside Ministries on May 2nd, 1989---my birthday! I have had a birthday gift that kept giving for 23 years. How lucky is that? I’ve seen many changes, much growth, have met hundreds of residents and family members and have enjoyed working with so many wonderful employee team members. My life has been enriched forever with memories to last a Iifetime; some funny, some happy, some sad, some heartwarming, but most of all the memories of smiling resident faces and the stories they have shared over the years. That is a true gift!”

Cibolo HouseSpending a little time with the garden boxes is a great way to enjoy the outdoors too. Our residents love tending their flower and herb gardens with great results!

The spring and summer seasons are a great time for everyone to enjoy the

outdoors, and our residents are no different! For some of our ladies, this was their first “fishing trip.”

Menger HouseMenger residents stay in good shape with the help of Trainer Annita Edgar at the Wiseman Wellness Center. She is shown here coaching resident Autry Been on the treadmill. The new wellness Center

has been “the place to see and be seen” on campus since the dedication earlier this Spring. Annita teaches four classes a week in the Center as well as water aerobics in our indoor pool.

Kendall House National Older American Week was celebrated with a “Cruise.” we set sail on Monday with a banana split bon voyage as we “split” town. our first port of call was Hawaii. we enjoyed fresh fruit kabobs and hula-hooping. Our Day 3 stop was Mexico with Mariachis, margaritas, and Mexican food. Our next stop was

France where we indulged ourselves with “French pastries” and beautiful pictures of the Eifel Tower. Day 5 was Italy! After a gondola ride we shared pizza with residents, staff and family members. we ended with some of our very own residents exhibiting their “pizza tossing” skills.

Tuesday. This group of senior ladies volunteer their time and talents crocheting and knitting blankets for New Century Hospice patients. These blankets aren’t just any blankets; they are given to people who are living out their last moments here on earth, so they have a very special meaning. Their hard work and dedication provide those individuals with small gifts of comfort and compassion. we’re so proud of what they do and delighted to share our conference room with such a great group of ladies!

Leadership, support, and vision are the three words that describe Maria wellisch. Maria has been actively involved in serving seniors for 19 years. Her personal commitment to aging services is exemplified by her desire to understand all aspects of care delivery. This includes obtaining a Nursing Facility Administrator License, as well as certification as an Assisted Living Manager.

Mar ia has demonst rated a commitment to serve the front line employee, best exemplified with the development of a highly successful career ladder program for nursing assistants. In addition, access to health services for uninsured employees has been her passion. She developed an employee telemedicine program that served 650 employees with

on-site primary healthcare services. Realizing the powerful impact that technology has in training family and professional caregivers, Maria created mmLearn.org that has developed over 200 caregiver training videos that have had more than 50,000 views in all 50 states and 77 countries.

Independent of Maria’s professional career, she has given 13 years of service to the United way. As a six-year member of The University of Texas Nurse Advisory Council, Maria has brought attention to the need for nurses to consider Geriatric Nursing as a career. Maria wellisch has made a profound impact on senior services and is most deserving of the ‘Distinguished Service Award’ as a tribute to her commitment to making a difference in the lives of seniors and those who care for them.

“I am truly honored to receive the ‘Distinguished Service Award’ this year. mmLearn.org was created by Morningside Ministries to serve the needs of healthcare professionals and family caregivers who work tirelessly to provide quality care to our seniors. It is an understatement to say that the lives of our older adults have been enhanced by hardworking and caring individuals. I accept this award on behalf of all CNAs, nurses and personnel in long-term care who strive each and every day to learn more so that they can provide better service to the many who are so deserving. I have been blessed to work with so many others who share my passion for serving seniors.”

In keeping with Morningside Ministries’ mission of “Caring For Those Who Cared For Us,” The Elizabeth McGown Training Institute was opened

in 2007 and mmLearn.org was launched to provide appropriate and accessible training for caregivers.

mmLearn.org uses interactive we b c a s t i n g a n d we b presentation technology to provide training and support to healthcare professionals, family caregivers and pastoral care providers. Lectures, workshops, how-to videos, conferences and other offerings are ‘webcast’

over the internet. without any additional software, caregivers are able to see and hear the instructor, view and download presentation materials as well as submit or ask questions of the presenters who are professional leaders in the field of aging. Since 2007, mmLearn.org has produced almost 200 videos and provided training to over 52,000 learners.

mmLearn.org A User’s Perspective The years of uncertainty to find much needed information and answers about the elderly and aging are long gone with the advent of the internet. A recent “gem,” my word for an online website which I frequently visit and now is a staple in my online favorites is, www.mmLearn.org. This free website provides personal and professional caregivers tools, products and services in an easy to navigate online framework. The topics offered address what to expect when caring for the aging and the elderly in terms of health and life issues.

Aging is a part of living. we often hear of people being in the sandwich generation. This refers to raising our children and being the caregivers of our parents or elderly family members at the same time. when we suddenly realize that we are parenting our parents as well as our kids, life takes on a new focus. with this focus often comes unexpected stress and uncertainty as how to handle all the responsibilities. Dealing with the elderly and the issues specific to their age group is the focus of www.mmLearn.org. This website provides articles, webinars, videos, blogs and onl ine courses specif ical ly for personal and professional caregivers.

when becoming a caregiver

some people feel squeezed between maintaining their own life and helping to maintain normalcy of the people who gave them life. Many feel alone and think they are the only ones dealing with caregiving issues. Running the gamut of emotions they wonder where to turn. Once introduced to the wide array of topics at www.mmLearn.org you feel supported by having immediate access to pertinent and relevant information about elderly and aging issues.

The website www.mmLearn.orgoffers what is often referred to as Just In Time (JIT) learning and training on a variety of topics related to caring for the elderly. Subject matter experts speak to us, not at us, in ways we can grasp. with clarity and understanding we become better equipped to deal with the common challenges of the elderly. Health issues such as eyes, hearing, the risk of falls and depression are just a few of the many health concerns covered. New and relevant resources and topics are often added addressing current caregiver issues.

whether perusing for ideas or information to stay ahead and learn about what to expect when caring for the elderly, the wide

array of user-friendly videos and resources offer answers to forward thinking questions. These free web based resources help to minimize the uncertainty of the unknown, bui ld confidence through understanding and provide a constant reminder that you are not alone. Professional caregivers also utilize www.mmLearn.org as an ongoing resource tool to stay current and proactive around the issues unique to this aging population.

I often visit www.mmLearn.org to gain clarity and guidance around caregiver issues. whether sitting at my home computer in my bunny slippers or at the office, I have access to this online website that provides personal and professional caregivers information, insight and support 24/7.

Knowing that no one is going to make it out of this life alive, as caregivers to family members we want to provide to those nearing the end the same love and dignity they gave to us when they welcomed us into their lives.

I encourage you to vis it www.mmLearn.org and see for yourself the insight shared at this faith-based, knowledge filled and heartfelt community all done online. Knowing this resource exists has been a blessing for many, including me. Hoping you find the same value and benefit. I invite you to experience this “gem” at www.mmLearn.org.

rELIgION thAt gODour Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:27

There is a lot in our world that takes the form of religion. Some of it is theologically sound but much of it is as shaky as a newborn colt in its first stroll. Some base their religion on a belief system while others on personal inner revelation. In the NT book of James, the writer proclaims religion to be more than just a set of documents; it is about how

we live out what we believe. That is why for more than fifty years, Morningside Ministries has been living out the faith by “Caring For Those Who Cared For Us.”
