Learn How to Love Your Heart
When: Friday, February 3, 12:30-2:30 pm
Where: Brookedale Farm
Who: The Community
RSVP: By January 25
Heart disease is the leading cause of death
among women in the United States. A shocking 80
percent of women ages 40-60 have one or more risk
factors for heart disease, putting them at a higher
chance of developing heart disease. Risk factors for
heart disease include; smoking, high blood pressure,
high blood cholesterol, diabetes and prediabetes,
obesity, lack of physical activity, unhealthy diet,
metabolic syndrome, family history, and pre-
eclampsia during pregnancy. Making your heart
health a priority and taking action can help lower the
chances of developing heart disease - prevention is
key. Tips to help lower your chances include not
smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, being more
physically active, eating a healthy diet and managing
stress.
To help continue raising awareness of heart
disease in women, WVU Medicine Potomac Valley
Hospital will be holding their 2nd Annual “Learn to
Love Your Heart” event. Grab your girlfriends and
head to Brookedale Farm on Friday, February 3,
from 12:30 –2:30 pm for an afternoon of shopping,
eating, learning, relaxation and other activities. En-
joy browsing products from different vendors, creat-
ing healthy meals, relaxation tips, and other activi-
ties. Enjoy browsing products from different ven-
dors, creating health meals, relaxation tips, and other
activities - all to help you keep yor heart healthy.
Spaces are limited, so please RSVP by January 25,
2017 bycalling 304-597-3565.

WV State Folk Festival
In 2017 we hope very much to have a CEOS mem-
ber or a community member represent Mineral
County as the County Belle at the West Virginia
State Folk Festival. This is a wonderful opportuni-
ty! Applications are available at the Extension Of-
fice and are due March 3.
Who: Each county may select one “belle” who:
Is past her 70th birthday
Possesses qualities consistent with the spirit of
pioneer women
Participates in Saturday’s Parade, walking
three level street blocks, in her own period
costume.
What: The West Virginia State Folk Festival is the
oldest celebration of our Appalachian roots.
The music is the primary focus; visitors al-
so enjoy crafts, demonstrations, square
dancing downtown, an old fashioned
spelling bee, quilt show, gospel singing and
much more! This year will be extra special
with the 150 celebration!
Why: Belles represent their county and are hon-
ored guests at Friday’s Banquet and all oth-
er meals and receptions. These good will
ambassadors are a unique feature of the
festival. New friendships are formed and
old acquaintances renewed. Don’t miss
out!

Clubs – Try a New Club Project in 2017
Are you ready to for something new? Whether it is per-sonally, in a group, or in a club, we sometimes get stuck in a rut and are bored with the dull repetitiveness. Today, challenge yourself and your group to try some-thing new. This topic is a map to identify a project or new activity for your club. The surprise comes when we enjoy what we previously were hesitant to try! PROJECTS What is a project? A project is a hands-on activity that involves multiple sessions to complete or to gain new skills. Depending upon the project selected, it could be completed in few months or it could last a year or more. Members gain a lifelong new skill that could turn into a profession. Steps to develop a club project
Identify the project. Create a project plan. Identify an instructor. Develop a realistic timeline for completion. Make a supply list for materials needed. Estimate the cost of the project. Purchase materials. Hold the first session.
Project ideas: With a limitless number of project ideas, here are just a few to start brainstorming. Rug Making Basket Making Basic Sewing - Curtains Needle Felting Community Flower Improvement Project Food Preservation Quilted Wall Hanging Candle Making Soap Making Watercolor Painting Photography Wreath Making Herb Gardening “I Decides Projects” The herb gardening project has the possibility of learn-ing basic herb planting in the spring, adding new herbs as the seasons change, and finally, sessions on cooking with the herbs produced.
Resources for project instruction A member or local instructor who can meet with the group to teach the project works well. However, in this modern age of online videos, it is possible to find relia-ble instruction support. For a listing of these resources, go the WVCEOS website at ceos.ext.wvu.edu. The service project What if my club just isn’t into making things? Service projects are a great too! Developing a service project follows the same steps. Just be sure to come up with new ideas. Remember, the goal is to try something new. Some service projects can incorporate both a skill and outreach. For example, traditional blanket projects al-low members to use a skill to make the blankets and then give them to hospitals or shelters through out-reach programs.

WV Women Who Made History!
This March WVCEOS lesson topic is especially good!
Be sure a lesson leader attends the training on January
25 at 9:00 AM at the Health Department. West Virginia
history of full of astonishing women who paved the way
for modern day women such as Harriet Jones, Ann Ma-
ria Reeves Jarvis, Kate Carpenter and Mary Lou Retton.
The fall copy of West Virginia Living includes a list of
50 “Wonder Women” who, through hard work and de-
termination, are making West Virginia a better place to
live today.
Ideas for Clubs:
* Learn about amazing women in WV History.
* Ask Club members to bring photos of the great women
in the lives.
* Discuss the ratification of the 19th amendment to the
U.S. Constitution on August 18, 1920 which gave wom-
en the right to vote. Soon to celebrate 100 years on
2020!
* Locate the WV Living article on 50 “Wonder Women”
and discuss.
* Discuss how things have changed for women over the
past 50 years 1967 - 2017.
