LIFESTYLE FARM & SMALL ANIMAL FEED RANGE | 7
The Barastoc lifestyle farm range
is designed for those for whom
farming is a passion, rather than
a primary source of income.
This range of feeds is uniquely
designed to promote the health
and wellbeing of animals typically
kept on smaller lifestyle holdings.
OUR
LIFESTYLE FARM
RANGE
Lifestyle or ‘hobby’ farming has
become increasingly popular in the
last 20 years, as more people embark
on the rewarding journey of raising
and caring for large animals, without
necessarily depending on them for
income. For some, the benefits are
having direct access to fresh milk,
meat, wool and other primary produce
for their own use. For others, it is about
providing their family with the benefits
of a rural lifestyle and the experience
of working with animals.
Lifestyle holdings can vary significantly
in size, with the average being around
four acres (10 hectares). A good rule of
thumb is the lawnmower test. If you can
mow the lawns with a hand lawnmower,
you’ve got a residential property. If you
need a ride-on mower, it’s a lifestyle
holding. And if you require a tractor,
you’ve got yourself a farm.
While the smaller size of lifestyle farms
makes them manageable for what
is a part-time interest, it also puts
limitations on how much nutrition
your animals can derive ‘off the land’.
On a smaller lot, it’s unlikely you’ll find
plant species in sufficient quantity and
variety to meet the nutritional needs
of your animals. In addition, alpacas,
llamas, kangaroos and other popular
lifestyle species require a number of
specific nutrients which are deficient
in Australian soils.
For these reasons, it is crucial to
provide animals on lifestyle farms
with quality commercial feeds.
The Barastoc lifestyle farm range has
been put together by our experienced
animal nutritionists, to provide a high-
quality, convenient and cost-effective
product, specifically for ‘lifestylers’.
Each feed has been formulated
to provide all of the necessary
nutrients – and in the right balance
– to optimise your animals’ growth,
health and productivity.
6 | BARASTOC
8 | BARASTOC LIFESTYLE FARM & SMALL ANIMAL FEED RANGE | 9
These mainstays of commercial
farms are also popular with lifestylers.
Lifestyle farmers keep cattle and
sheep for a variety of reasons, from
having a house cow for fresh milk to
raising sheep for their meat or fleece
– some do it purely for the enjoyment
of rearing more unusual breeds.
As ruminants, cows and sheep meet
most of their nutritional requirements
by grazing fresh or dry pasture.
Supplementary feeding with an
appropriate commercial feed can,
however, be very beneficial to adult
animals. This is especially true where
grazing opportunities are limited
or the quality of the pasture is poor,
and will ensure their ongoing
health and wellbeing.
Barastoc Hobby Farm Mix is a
multi-species feed that has been
formulated to provide a convenient
and cost-effective supplementary
ration to ensure that adult cattle
and sheep get the right balance
of nutrients for overall health and
wellness. It’s also suitable for goats,
especially when they’re kept in
mixed herds with sheep and cattle.
FEEDING GUIDE
A plentiful supply of good-quality
roughage such as grass or hay
must be available at all times,
and animals should be allowed
to eat this to appetite.

Goats are one of the oldest
domesticated species, with a
reputation for being able to eat
anything and everything. Modern
breeds of goats have become
popular with lifestylers for their milk
(and milk products like cheese),
as well as their meat and fine fleece.
While they are indeed browsing
animals, sampling a wide range of
plant material to get the nutrients they
require, goats do have specific nutrient
requirements that are best met with the
use of prepared supplementary feeds.
Goats require a high-fibre diet based
on either fresh or dry pasture to keep
their digestive microflora healthy.
Goats also need certain minerals
and vitamins for their maintenance
and the proper functioning of their
physiological systems. Fat-soluble
vitamins (A, D, E and K) must be
provided in a goat’s diet, as it is unable
to make these vitamins itself. Feeding of
calcium and phosphorus (in a 2:1 ratio)
is recommended for better structural
and bone strength, along with dietary
supplementation of copper, as goats
have a tendency to be copper deficient.
In Australia, where soils are very low
in selenium, supplementary feeding
programs should provide this mineral
to prevent deficiencies.
There are also some health problems
specific to goats that can be prevented
or managed with the correct nutrition.
Male goats are susceptible to developing
urinary calculi, a dietary-related disorder
than can result in the urinary tract being
blocked, sometimes fatally. Inclusion
of ammonium chloride or ammonium
sulphate in their feed will help prevent
this problem.
Barastoc’s goat feeds have been
designed to meet all of these
nutritional needs in a convenient
and cost-effective ration, so you
can get the most out of rearing
these unique animals.
FEEDING GOATS

It is important when introducing these feeds to allow the goats to adapt to minimise the risk of acidosis (grain poisoning). It is recommended that feed intake be increased gradually over a two- to three-week period until the target feed-out rate is achieved.
For best management practice, do not feed more than 1 kilogram of Barastoc Goat Pellet or Barastoc Goat Mix per meal to adult goats, or more than 0.25 kilograms per feeding to young and growing goats.

Alpacas and llamas are highly adaptable
grazers native to mountainous regions
of South America, including Peru, Bolivia
and Chile. They have become popular
with lifestylers for their fine fleece and
unique character.
Both alpacas and llamas belong to a
group of animals known as the South
American camelids, which are quasi-
ruminants with three-chambered
stomachs. These animals need
palatable, digestible, long-stemmed
roughage (leafy, green pasture, hay
and/or silage greater than 4cm in
length) to keep their fore-stomachs
functioning normally.
In the wild, they typically thrive
on grasses and sedges. This diet
is nutritionally poor, so alpacas
and llamas have evolved to be very
efficient in extracting and storing
energy as fat. Care must therefore be
taken with domestic animals to ensure
that they don’t become overweight
when fed nutrient-rich diets.
Unlike sheep and cattle, which are
grazers, alpacas and llamas are
browsers. In their natural habitat, they
browse a variety different plants to
meet the high vitamin and mineral
requirements of their diet. They
come from areas with high-selenium
soils, which makes them particularly
predisposed to selenium deficiency
in Australia, where soil levels are
generally low. They also require vitamin
D supplementation, especially in the
lower latitudes of Australia.
On a lifestyle farm, alpacas and llamas
will certainly require supplementary
feeding, as pasture will be limited and
often deficient in certain vital minerals
and trace elements. Barastoc’s Alpaca
Pellet feed ensures that the needs of
your alpacas and llamas are met in a
convenient and cost-effective ration.
FEEDING ALPACAS AND LLAMAS
Type of animal Live-weight Feeding Rate
Young growing alpacas 50kg 0.25 to 0.7kg per animal per day
Adult alpacas 70kg 0.25 to 1.0kg per animal per day
It is important to adapt alpacas and llamas to Barastoc Alpaca Pellet, so it is recommended that feed intake be increased gradually over a two- or three-week period to minimise the risk of acidosis (grain poisoning). As a guide, start feeding Barastoc Alpaca Pellet at a rate of 0.25kg per 50kg of body weight per animal per day. Gradually increase the feeding rate over the next 21 days to 0.70kg per 50kg of body weight per animal per day.
FEEDING GUIDE
A plentiful supply of good quality
roughage such as grass or hay must
be available at all times, and animals
should be allowed to eat this to appetite.
Alpacas and llamas prefer to be fed at
ground level and to be fed individually
in troughs. Animals should be fed in a
confined area and you should provide
ample space for individual animals
to feed properly.
The pasture or hay should
be supplemented with Barastoc
Alpaca Pellet according to
the following table.

FEEDING GUIDE
Following the directions provided on page 20.
Ensure that animals have access to clean, fresh water at all times.
This feed has been specifically formulated for kangaroos and wallabies and must not be used for other species of animals.
Kangaroos and wallabies are among
the most unique animals in the world,
with nutritional requirements to
match. As large, foregut-fermenting
marsupials, they need a balanced feed
ration specifically designed for their
digestive system and their dietary
needs. Their energy requirements in
an enclosed home range are also much
lower than they would be in the wild,
and their diet should account for this
to help them maintain a healthy body
mass index (BMI).
In their natural habitat, kangaroos
and wallabies will graze a wide variety
of native grasses and young shoots,
as well as the foliage of trees and
shrubs, including eucalypts and
mosses. This varied diet ensures
that they meet all their macronutrient
and micronutrient requirements.
On a farm or lifestyle holding, kangaroos
and wallabies will have limited access
to these natural nutrition sources. They
are also susceptible to vitamin E and
selenium deficiency and deficiency
related diseases, and their antioxidant
requirements are increased due to
the additional stress of living within
an enclosure. A properly formulated
supplementary feed will make sure
they provided all of these nutrients,
and ensure they stay lean and healthy

Most of us have been lucky
enough to grow-up with pets.
Animal companions teach us
nurturing skills, responsibility,
empathy and a deeper connection
to the natural world. We grow to
love our pets, and giving them the
right nutrition is critical to their
continued health and wellbeing
as part of the family.
OUR
SMALL ANIMAL RANGE
After dogs and cats, the most popular
small animals to keep as pets are
rabbits*, guinea pigs, rats and mice.
They’re a diverse collection, but they
have a few important qualities in
common. These animals are all hardy,
with low to moderate maintenance
needs. They’re also affectionate and
have distinct personalities.
24 | BARASTOC
Barastoc has a range of both
complete and supplementary feeds
for your pets, to ensure that they get
the nutrition they need to thrive.
*Due to the risk that rabbits pose to the environment, it is illegal to keep them as pets in Queensland.
26 | BARASTOC LIFESTYLE FARM & SMALL ANIMAL FEED RANGE | 27
Rabbits and guinea pigs are herbivores
and naturally reside in grassy areas.
Leaves, roots and seeds usually make up
the bulk of their diet. It requires care to
manage the nutrition of domesticated
animals where these natural sources of
nutrition aren’t available.
Fibre is one of the most important
supplements for these animals.
Rabbits and guinea pigs are hind-gut
fermenters. This means they have a
specially adapted organ, the caecum,
which contains micro-organisms that
enable them to extract nutrients from
plant material – nutrients which would
otherwise not be available. Critical to
this process is maintaining the right
microflora in the caecum, which can
be achieved with a high-fibre diet.
Fibre is also critical to maintaining
dental health, as a feature of both
rabbits and guinea pigs is that
their teeth grow continuously
throughout their life time. This is an
evolutionary adaption to a diet high
in teeth-wearing roughage.
Vitamin C should also be part of any
balanced diet for guinea pigs. Guinea
pigs are one of the few animals (along
with humans) that are unable to make
their own vitamin C. It’s therefore
crucial to provide a quality vitamin C
supplement in their diet to ensure that
they don’t suffer from deficiencies and
deficiency related disease.
Barastoc Rabbit and Guinea Pig Pellet
is a pelletised feed that has been
specifically formulated to cover all of
these nutritional needs. Additionally,
the texture of this pelletised feed has
been designed to give your animals
something to chew, to keep their teeth
in good condition.
FEEDING RABBITS AND GUINEA PIGS
Type of animal Feeding Rate
Rabbits Dry does and bucks: Feed 100g per animal per day.
Pregnant does: Feed 160g per animal per day.
Lactating does: Feed 350g per animal per day.
Guinea Pigs Growing guinea pigs: Feed 4g of per 100g of body weight per animal per day.
Adult guinea pigs: Feed 20-40g per animal per day.
FEEDING GUIDE
When kept in a domestic environment as
pets, it’s important to ensure that rabbits
and guinea pigs are provided with a
nutritionally balanced diet by feeding
them a combination of pelletised feed,
hay or chaff, along with chopped fresh
vegetables and fruits.
Barastoc Rabbit and Guinea Pig Pellet
should be fed at a rate that makes up
approximately 50% (by weight) of a
rabbit or guinea pig’s total diet.

If you keep rabbits for commercial breeding and growing, then higher protein and energy levels will be required in their diet. It is also essential to provide the correct levels and types of amino acids. These are the building blocks for proteins that are needed by rabbits and other animals to attain optimum growth. Vitamins and minerals are equally important to optimise breeding and growth potential.
As with pet rabbits, a high-fibre diet is essential to ensure good gut function

and health. Ensuring that your rabbits get high-quality feed will also help to avoid upsetting their sensitive digestive systems. It’s also important to note that, along with good nutrition, good husbandry practices are essential to prevent health problems in commercial rabbit production.
Barastoc Rabbit Pellet is a complete feed specifically formulated for commercial breeding, lactation and optimum growth of rabbits. This feed also contains butyrate to help your rabbits maintain good digestive health.
Barastoc Rabbit Pellet should be
gradually introduced to their diet
over 7–10 days and according to the
guidelines in the following table.
FEEDING GUIDE

Rats and mice make popular pets partly
because they are so easy to handle and
care for. Both animals are omnivores that
require a high-protein diet with essential
amino acids, balanced vitamins and
minerals for optimal health and growth,
and fats for a healthy skin and coat.
As small, active animals with high
metabolisms, rats and mice have high
energy and protein demands. It is also
essential that mice are provided with
magnesium, vitamin A and choline in
their diet. Rats have similar dietary
requirements to those of mice,
though they require higher fibre
and lower fat content.
Both animals will selectively feed
if given a mix of feed types, which
can result in nutrient deficiencies.
A pelleted feed not only prevents this
from happening, but also provides
them with something on which to
hone their continuously growing teeth.
Barastoc Rat and Mouse Pellet
will ensure that all of the needs of
domesticated rats and mice are met.
FEEDING GUIDE
Barastoc Rat and Mouse Pellet is
intended as a supplementary feed for
