    Puerto Banus

Puerto Jos Bans, more commonly known as Puerto Bans is a marina located in the area of Nueva Andaluca, to the southwest of Marbella, Spain on the Costa del Sol.

It was built in May 1970 by Jos Bans, a local property developer, as a luxury marina and shopping complex. It has since become one of the largest entertainment centres in the Costa del Sol, with 5 million annual visitors, and is popular with international celebrities.

    Marbella Old Town

The Old Town is situated in Downtown Marbella, offering a more traditional, and Spanish environment, with local restaurants, cafes, independent boutiques and architecture dating back to 1485.

    Influence - Format

I really like the use of smaller with a combination of type used for this supplement cover. I think the overall layout using negative space and one colour only for the body copy really gives a smart, sophisticated and up-market aesthetic/tone, whilst being a good format to work with and produce/distribute as a supplement.

    Influence - Photography

I selected this look book/magazine to its super clean and fresh layout, as well as the use of simplistic sans serif typefaces running throughout the body copy. I feel this allows engagement with a younger audience, yet takes away the quality and seriousness of the topic.

    Aesthetic Influence

    Influence - Layout

The use of overlaid imagery and type here is very subtle yet elegant, whilst breaking up dense amounts of body copy in a much more sophisticated and visually pleasing

    Layout Development

Initially I worked with the layout using placeholder text and image boxes. I used an initial grid of 15 x 11, allowing for consistent squares allowing for any grid structure within it to be used. The outside edge however has a 2 column/row margin allowing for the text and imagery to be clear, concise and in-line with the tone and context of the supplement. I found using this as an initial guide allowed for the grid structure to develop naturally, with the information being contained in one place.

    Typography

Four typefaces have been selected for use throughout the supplement, and are shown in the hierarchy used throughout the editorial publication above.

Perla is the main typeface used consistently throughout for titles and headlines, whilst Lekton forms the Lifestyle & Culture logo. Baskerville is the main typeface for the body copy, whilst Gino School Script is used more sporadically for detail.

    Outcome: Typography and Cover

    Cover

Lekton and Perla are the typefaces which has been used for the body copy and headline on the cover page shown below. A variety of type setting has been used to allow for the information to be placed in a structured and visually appealing way, yet allowing for easy reading.

This layout will act as a template for future editions of the supplement.

    Layout

A full layout for the magazine was created consistently yet using different double page spreads as and when appropriate, as well as additional details such as specific placement of numbers, titles, headers, images and overlays.

Each layout varies on the feature, however remains clear, legible, simple and minimal to the eye following type hierarchies.

    Outcome: Layout

    Format

The supplement has been set to a unique size, allowing for it to fit into any magazine/newspaper whilst not over crowding or being a loose article.

    Format: 150mm W x 21cm H

    Photography Selection

All of the photography used has been taken by myself whilst on my own travels, allowing for me to manipulate and selection images fitting for the supplements contents and features.

The images aim to show the lifestyle, culture and context of Marbella also as being visually appealing for the audience as a location to visit.

    Type Setting

In regards to type setting, I wanted to portray all the information in a broken down manner, allowing for easy reading and an exciting visual layout. By combining typefaces, point sizes and extra detailing, as shown below, a luxury, up-market, yet clean and smart layout has been developed

The top-left of each page highlights the chapter/article. The right hand side is the main focus and should only be the main headline/information. This allows for easy reading and clear structure throughout.
