Report on the National field seminar on heathland management held September 28’th-29’th 2015.

The national seminar. The national seminar was held at the Skarrildhus conference centre near one of the project site (site 64 Harrild Hede,). For dissemination reasons the seminar war arranged in cooperation with two local municipalities (Herning and Viborg) and EnviNA (The Danish association of envi-ronmental-, planning- and nature employees in the public sector).

Invitation was announced through the EnviNa network (webpage a direct to the members), published on the project website and directly to all the units in the Na-ture Agency. The result was very satisfying with 64 participants registering for the seminar. Participants were divided among 14 municipalities (19 participants), 5 consultan-cies, 3 contractors, and 4 from University of Copenhagen, 2 from the Danish De-fence Estates and Infrastructure Organisation, 8 students and from 23 from the Na-ture Agency.

Restoration of Atlantic heaths and inland dunes in Denmark National Seminar Heathland management September 28’th- 29’th 2015.

Controlled burning on one of the sites visited later on the day. Grazing as a management method. v/Ole Knudsen, Naturstyrelsen Blåvandshuk. Impressions from a visit to Netherlands and Belgium. Jesper Stenild, Naturstyrelsen, Kronjylland Impressions from the 14th European heathland-workshop in Poland v/Claus Simonsen Naturstyrelsen, Trekantsområdet. Seminar day 1. Afternoon. The afternoon field trip went to two sites: Trehøje Bakker and Skovbjerg Bakkeø. At Trehøje Bakker the topics were control of controlled burning, harvesting and dedicated grazing management using sheep under shepherd control. Lise Kjær Poulsen from the municipality of Herning explained about the coopera-tion with the owners of the area, and the multiple methods used for a long period of management.

Participants looking for insects in a newly harvested area. The participants met the professional shepherdess Berit Kiilerich who told about the management of heathland with sheep.

The sheep and the shepherd. At Skovbjerg Bakkeø the topics was to see the result of controlled burning for dec-ades, the effect of a large population of red deer on the heathland, and finally watching drift sands and dynamism in the inland dunes and the impact on biodiver-sity.

A discussion of grazing at Vind Hede At Nørre Vosborg Hede there was a short coffee break at one of the larger dunes of the heath, and besides watching the three cranes standing in a low wet part of the heath, the participants could experience an example of successful heathland man-

agement by harvesting, burning and grazing by a large free range population of red deer.

Nr Vosborg, heather a few years after controlled burning At Østre Sande the effect of drifting sand in forming the inland dunes was demon-strated. During the last 30 years, more and more of the old sand drifts has been covered by vegetation, and it was discussed whether or not it will be necessary to artificially help new drift-sands to occur.

Open sand drifts at Øster Sande, should there be more of them? At Øster Sande Christian Hollesen also showed us in situ the burned area we have seen on the slides at the lecture in the morning.

Seminar day 1. Evening program. In the evening after the dinner it was time for the participants to do some network-ing and discussing the day’s program. Seminar day 2. Morning program. Field trip to Uhre Hede: At Uhre Hede Carsten Funch Madsen (Municipality of Viborg) gave an example on cooperation with a local landowner. Here a heathland area of 25 ha endangered by total encroachment has been saved by clear-cutting of mountain pine, (Pinus mugo) and subsequently has the top soil been removed. The contractor (Esper Thygesen) told in detail about the technical issues of the soil removal.

Carsten Funch Madsen (Municipality of Viborg) explains the process of topsoil removal at Uhre. To the right one of the organizers Lise Kjær Poulsen from the municipality of Herning.

Seminar day 2. Lunch program. Lunch was taken at Harrild Hede Visitor centre dedicated to disseminate the nature and culture of the heathland. Included in the lunch was a possibility for the partici-pants to see the small exhibition in the centre financed by the LIFE project...

Hans Jensen (Nature Agency) briefs the participant at the Nature Centre at Harrild Hede. Seminar day 2. Evening program. Visiting demonstrations sites, demonstration of a new and gentler way to remove top soil (or more precisely heather plant litter), As part of the LIFE two demonstration sites has been established, informing of 5 different techniques for heathland management. One of the sites was visited.

Hans Jensen informs about one of the techniques, here topsoil removal. Close to the demonstration sites it was arranged for the participants to see at simple and cheap technique for removal of the heather turf (plant litter) without disturbing the underlying mineral soil. The technique contains three steps.

1. Two perpendicular runs with a light disc harrow. 2. The litter are raked together with a mechanical rake. 3. And then the litter is collected, For example by using a beach cleaning ma-

chine

The litter ready for collecting. After the demonstration the participants saw examples of historically heath land cultivation, top soil removal, harvesting. The day ended at Nørlund Hede at a where the disc harrow system has been used with at very successful result, appraise by the participants. The visit at Nørlund Hede made a spectacular final on a successful seminar.
