HEART –VITAL ORGAN If your heart is beating then you are

alive and the moment it stops you are dead.

The question rise in our heads is that why ,if science has progressed so much that a man can travel to the space ,but it cannot find a viable solution to substitute heart with something else when necessary-the answer is that science has come up with solution recently.

CONTINOUS FLOW DEVICE This device imitates the heart and

can be considered as complete artificial heart because the implant has the ability to support the blood flow in person whose heart cannot work anymore .

The brillant doctors who came up with this technology are drs.bud frazier and billy cohn from texas.

WORKING The pump contains an internal rotor with

helical blades that curve around a central shaft . when the rotor spins on its axis ,kinetic energy is generated imparted to the blood , which is drawn continuously from the left ventricular apex through the pump and into the ascending aorta.

This device consists of an internal axial flow blood pump with percutaneous lead that connects the pump to an external system driver and power source.

This implant has volume of 63ml and generates up to 10 liters per minute.This device has blades,

which rotate an average of 2000 times per minute , pushing blood through out the body without creating pulse.

Complications and side effects

Bleeding –after implantation(post operative bleeding)

Coagulation-because the device generally results in blood flowing over non biological surface predisposing the blood to clotting.

when it is preferred??When the heart damage is irreversible/can’t be treated with medications.In case of amyloidosis ,it is preferred .Other therapies like intra aortic ballon pump counter pulsation and intra venous inotropic therapy were unsuccesful in restoring adequate circulation.

CONCLUSION The artificial heart is very effective

as a bridge to transplant ,but the number of people that can be saved with human heart is limited. A perfect artificial heart could save many more patients.
