Radio Life & Style has got a lot of people talking. We have had over a hundred guests sharing their

expertise, opinions or simply sending greetings on the airwaves over our first two months of broadcasting.

The human voice is the one instrument we all can play. It creates the most powerful sounds in the world capable of starting wars or inspiring great acts of love and sacrifice. And yet many people have the experience that when they speak, people don't listen to them.

This is because we often default to the six deadly sins of speaking when we engage with others and this significantly diminishes what we say. This is not an exhaustive list, but these are, I think, some of the most destructive habits that we can fall into.

But if we recognise them for what they are, we can take measures to change the way we communicate to become altogether more positive influences in the world.

First on the list is gossip or speaking ill of somebody who's not present and able to defend themselves. It’s not a nice habit, and it’s a safe bet that the person we are gossiping with, will be gossiping about us later.

Second is judging or criticising because it makes us feel better by comparison. We know people who are like this in conversation, and it's very hard to listen to somebody if you know that you're being judged and found wanting at the same time.

Third is negativity. It’s so easy to fall into this habit and it’s a hard one to break. One form of negativity is constant complaining. This has almost

become our national sport, depending on who you are talking to. We complain about the government, about sport, about crime, about service, but actually complaining is viral misery. It perpetuates the feeling of hopelessness in the world.

Another habit we are easily sucked in to, is finding excuses to explain why we are not doing what we know we should be doing to make us happy. It’s so easy to blame circumstances beyond our control or other people for everything that’s wrong with the world instead of accepting responsibility for taking control of our lives. We almost enjoy playing the victim in the hope of finding a little sympathy or what we perceive as acceptance – we are all in this together we think…it makes us feel safer…but it really shouldn’t!

The fifth of the six deadly sins of speaking is exaggeration. Exaggeration is really just another form of lying, and no one wants to listen to people that we know are lying to us.

And the last of the six is dogmatism, the confusion of facts with opinions. When somebody is bombarding you with their opinions as if they were true it’s really difficult to listen to them.

So these are things I think we would do really well to avoid and they aren’t that difficult to come to terms with because there are four really powerful propositions that we

can use to make a positive impact when we communicate.

Honesty or being truthful in what you say is a good start, as is authenticity - just being yourself. Integrity or doing what you say, and being somebody people can trust is another antidote to the six deadly sins and finally, the most powerful proposition of them all is kindness.

Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all the care, kindness and understanding you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again.

Mrs Holmes with Grant Fowlds from the Kingsley Rhino Art Foundation. The Junior College handed over R6 780 to the Rhino

Fund collected on Valentine’s Day. Ashton have a firm relationship with Save the Rhino and were instrumental in creating awareness

of the plight of the Rhino by partnering with Kingsley Holgate and the Rhino Foundation. Ashton distributed pictures of the

Rhino during for Colouring In Competition and challenged KZN Independent Schools to come on board.

NEWS @ AShTON2015 has started with a bang,

and only 7 weeks into the new year, Ashton has achieved excellence in Academics, Sport and Culture. With 100% pass rates in the Cambridge International General Certificate in Secondary Education (IGCSE), the Independent Examinations Board Matric Finals and the Cambridge Primary Checkpoint examinations, it was time to apply the same level of excellence to the sport and cultural fronts.

The Senior College has won every league gala this season, and went on to impress Kings Park by winning the D&D A League Co-ed Gala convincingly by 32 points, with Crawford La Lucia 2nd, Thomas More 3rd, ahead of Grantleigh, Amanzimtoti, St Henry’s, Kloof High, Hillcrest, Kingsway and South City. For the first time the entire Senior College travelled to Kings Park and the spirit and support, singing and cheering was a display of true heart, spirit, character and courage. The Junior College followed a week later when they finished 3rd overall in their B league D&D Gala, with their u13 girls breaking two records.

For our 1st team rugby boys, a dream is about to come true. They will be playing the curtain raiser for the Sharks vs Chiefs Super 15 clash,

at Kings Park on 21 March at 17h05. Ashton’s 1st team will play against Crawford La Lucia, and our boys will be playing in blue jerseys as Ashton stands together to create an awareness of Autism to emphasise the “Light it up blue” campaign. Our Open Day for the Grace Wing at Ashton, which caters for students from 3 – 6years on the autism spectrum, will be held on 20 March from 13h00 – 16h00.

On the cultural side, Ashton extends a cordial invitation to our Dolphin Coast families to join us in the Grace Hall for the musical production, ‘The Witness’. This is a combined production by our Junior and Senior College choirs, musicians and staff, as we celebrate our Christian ethos and share the story of the life of Jesus. Entrance will be free of charge, but it is essential to book seats and collect tickets from Ashton’s reception. The performances will be held on Tuesday, 24 March and Wednesday 25 March at 17h30 for 18h00.

Our official Open days earlier this month, were a great success and we are looking forward to many new families joining us in 2016. Our doors are always open for those still wishing to visit our campus – we look forward to welcoming you to our Ashton family.

Between load-

shedding, water restrictions and the SONA circus, it seems the annual Budget Speech went by almost unnoticed. Our Finance Minister, Nhlanhla Nene, may have been pleased it didn’t take centre-stage considering it was the first time we saw income tax rise. In previous years,

nominal reductions in the tax rates have generally been just enough to offset inflationary pressures. This year, however, anyone earning over R450 000 p.a will pay more tax in the year ahead. Those earning under R450 000 will experience marginal decreases and those with a salary of R181 900 or less, will be the only ones who will experience any inflationary relief from tax cuts.

Be that as it may, there are a few

pertinent budget speech points that may be worth noting:

1) Exchange controls Exchange Controls for those

wanting to take money abroad have been further relaxed. The foreign capital allowance for SA residents has increased from R4 million to R10 million per calendar year; or upon emigration. If emigrating as a family unit, this increases to R20 million. The subcategories under the individual single discretionary allowance have been removed; therefore, the annual R1 million allowance may be used for any legal purpose abroad.

2) tax Free savings accounts (tFsa)This is probably the most

favourable part of the budget speech and should be considered by every investor. Some of the most important points follow: • Contributions are subject to an annual limit of R30 000 and a lifetime limit of R500 000. • Investment returns, growth and payouts will be tax free. • Investors can disinvest at any time from their tax-free savings.• Any contribution in excess of the limits will attract a penalty of 40% from SARS.

3) income disability Products

In short, anyone with an income disability product may find themselves over-insured. Previously, the consumer benefitted from a tax deduction on all premiums paid towards income disability, but any income paid out in the event of disability was taxable. Now, you will not benefit from tax deductions on premiums but will receive tax free income if you become disabled. In short, where you previously needed to cover yourself on your gross income (before tax), you can now work on a lower amount of net income (after tax.)

Although we may be left somewhat uninspired after the budget speech, the points highlighted above may give you an opportunity to better manage your wealth going forward. The questions you should be asking yourself are: 1) Do I have adequate offshore exposure? (Especially considering the recent rand weakness and a recovering US market) 2) Where and how should I invest in order to take advantage of the TFSA? 3) Am I over insured? – read paying too much - for disability insurance that will no longer allow me a tax deduction.

So, although great strides have been taken to make tax legislation simpler and more user friendly, planning around tax has become more important than ever before. The most prudent approach is to seek out the advice of a professional to ensure the most appropriate strategy.

FOCUS ON THE LAW

THE CONSUmEr PrOTECTiON ACT, “vOETSTOOTS” & PrOPErTy SALES If you of thinking of buying or selling property? The Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 (CPA) may apply to your transaction and it has many legal implications in all fields. This article deals with some of the ways it affects property sales. The burning question: Who is liable for defects in the property? One of the most challenging issues that may threaten the successful sale of a property is the condition that the property comes in. While a property is sold Voetstoots (“as is”), there may be an agreement between the parties, reached prior to the parties signing an OTP, whereby the seller undertakes to correct certain defects to the property. The main question however is: “Who bears liability for defects in the property?”. It is not uncommon for the purchaser, after having identified a number of failings or defects in the property, to shift the liability to the seller. There are a number of ways to approach this issue:The following question should be asked: -Is the seller liable for defects in the property? Or might the estate agent, in appropriate circumstances, shoulder this burden?-If the answer to both questions is negative, is it simply the case that, without appropriate insurance, the purchaser takes the property subject to whatever defects it has? These questions need to be considered against the background of the fact that the sale agreement will in most instances contain a “Voetstoots” clause and against the background of any liability imposed by the CPA.It is important to understand the situation with regard to “Voetstoots” clauses. A seller disposing of property in terms of an agreement containing a “voetstoots” clause, provides no warranty in respect of the property and as such liable for neither patent

(visible/current) nor latent (hidden/future) defects. This situation however, differs from the warranty by a seller at common law (where a “voetstoots” clause is not present). At common law, a seller is not liable for clearly noticeable (“patent”) defects in the thing he sells. The rationale behind this rule is that defects which would (or should) have been spotted through a reasonably careful inspection of the property by the purchaser are to be borne by the purchaser. At common law, the position in respect of hidden (“latent”) defects is different. Where there is a defect in the property that is not visible or noticeable upon a careful inspection, the seller is liable for it.

What does this mean when applying it to the agreement? The seller may be called upon to refund part of the purchase price if the defect does not render the property entirely unfit for the purpose but merely makes it less useful; or to accede to the cancellation of the sale if the defect makes the property fundamentally unsuited for its intended purpose. It should be added that the difference between a patent and latent defect is simply a question of fact and degree. On the other hand, a “voetstoots” clause serves to exclude the abovementioned common law liability for latent defects. However, if the seller was aware of a latent defect, a “voetstoots” clause in an agreement of sale does not exclude the seller’s liability. In other words, the seller bears a duty to reveal to the purchaser any latent defects.

IT'S OFFICIAL. Drinking wine does make you beautiful, even if your companion is sober.

Scientists claim that wine and other alcohol can dilate pupils, bring on rosy cheeks and relax facial muscles to make a person appear more approachable.

But for someone to look their best, they advise sticking to just one glass. Any more, and rosy cheeks may turn red, while any relaxed facial muscles will start looking unnatural. This is according to a study by Bristol

University who asked 40 students to drink different amounts of alcohol, while their sober companions judged them on appearance.

The researchers photographed their faces three times: when sober, after drinking the equivalent of one glass of wine, and after drinking a second alcoholic drink, according to a report by LiveScience.

The sober group rated these headshots, which were placed

side-by-side for comparison.

They saw either a photo of a person sober next to a photo after one drink, or a sober photo next to a photo taken after two drinks. According to the study, the photos taken after one drink were rated as more attractive than the sober photos. After two drinks, students found the sober photo more attractive.

'It suggests that, if it's true, people are rated as more attractive once they've consumed a small amount of alcohol,' the study's senior researcher, Marcus Munafò, told LiveScience.

'But if they go on to consume more alcohol, they're no longer rated as more attractive.'

While it's not known exactly why alcohol can improve someone's appearance, the researchers suggest it may be to do with pupil dilation – which can indicate attraction and rapport.

Muscle relaxation in the face and rosy cheeks could also be reasons that someone is more attractive after just one

drink.'That obviously doesn't mean that

alcohol is healthy,' said Professor Munafò. 'What it means is that alcohol is sort of hijacking that mechanism, or promoting the aspects of facial features that we regard as attractive for other

reasons.'The researchers

conducted the study in a laboratory setting, but they admit that in the real-world, if your companion is also drinking, it's unlikely to matter how many drinks you have had.

This they say, is down to the 'beer goggle' effect, which

describes how people can find others more attractive after a few drinks.

Earlier this year, the same team claimed to prove that beer goggles really do exist.

They asked volunteers to look at photos of men, women and landscapes before and after drinking - and in every category alcohol affected their perceptions.

The volunteers were divided into two groups - one group drank just one alcoholic drink, while the other drank a non-alcoholic placebo drink.

Among the images there were 20 male faces, 20 female faces and 20 landscapes.

Researchers said attractiveness ratings were higher for all three image types among the alcohol group compared to the placebo group.

The Beach Hut can be booked out exclusively for private functions, Custom designed menu with concept.

Chef’s Table aT

LA PIAZZA Restaurant in Ballito recently held a special chef’s table gathering for members of the local media to experience the

best of what the kitchen has to offer. The idea behind the event was to promote their chef’s table concept which is now available to the public. It takes place on one Tuesday every month from 7pm to 9pm and includes a three-course meal of the chef’s choosing. Price is R250 per head and booking is essential as there is only space for 20 guests per event.

IT’S fast becoming the place to meet in Ballito. With the beach in close proximity, it makes sense that a coastal themed restaurant would be a

popular choice. The Beach Hut is a real gem – a delightfully fresh and informal setting just a stone’s throw from the beach with easy access and plenty of parking on Library Lane. This is at the heart of the Ballito revival and it’s where the best people gather for breakfasts, lunches, coffee breaks and, of late, relaxed dinners too. The food is honest, fresh and consummately prepared by internationally renowned chef and owner, Michael Ovens under the watchful eye of his wife, Joanna.

Michael has seventeen years of experience in acclaimed restaurants across the globe and has settled now to raise a family on the North Coast. This is a real win for Ballito, as so many have already discovered.

They not only play the best music but they also do a huge amount of good work in the community, raising awareness for worthwhile initiatives and galvanising contributions in cash and kind to help those

who need it most. Dustin is an extremely talented graphic designer who runs his own company, Dusted Ink. Most of the really creative posters in Ballito are designed by Dustin as is our radio Life & Style logo and branding.

Mel has just left college where she studied radio and is now freelancing at east Coast radio as well as presenting her show on radio Life & Style.

ThE SmARTWATCh FINAlly bECOmES STylISh! Huawei launcHes luxurious android wearable witH built-in Heart rate monitor and barometer

RuMOuRS about Huawei’s fitness band and headphones leaked before this year’s Mobile World Congress, but one wearable that surprised many was its first smartwatch.

The Huawei Watch is powered by Android Wear, has a 1.4-inch touchscreen and comes with a built-in heart rate monitor.

The crown, frame and hinge are made of scratch-resistant stainless steel and there will be 40 watch faces to choose from when it launches. The watch will be available later this year across Europe, Asia and the US although the exact date and price information hasn't been announced.

Huawei has a range of wearables including the TalkBand B1, the new B2 and the N1 headphones but this is the Chinese firm’s first smart watch.

The 1.4-inch display has a resolution of 400 x 400 pixels, giving it a 286 pixel-per-inch density.

By comparison, the Moto 360 which also has a circular screen and has a PPI of 205.

PPI is an indicator of image sharpness, clarity and colour and the higher the number, the better.

Huawei’s watch pairs with any Android phone running 4.3 and above. Once connected, notifications received on the phone are also shown on the watch including texts, emails, meetings, calls and Facebook posts, and more.

It runs on a Qualcomm 1.2GHz processor, includes 4GB of storage, 512MB of RAM and is Bluetooth enabled.

And in addition to the heart rate monitor, the watch has six-axis motion sensor and barometer that automatically detects and tracks in real-time if a user is walking, running, biking, hiking or sleeping.

Specifically, users can monitor the number of calories burned, heart rate, climbing height, steps taken, and distance travelled.

‘We have responded to consumers’ requests from around the world asking for a smartwatch featuring a timeless design that is truly smart from within,’ said

Richard Yu, chief executive of Huawei Consumer Business Group.

‘As the first smartwatch in our expanding line of premium wearable products, the Huawei Watch was designed and created to enhance and be part of the consumer’s everyday lives.’

Huawei continued the watch is made using 130 components and the steel is what’s known as ‘cold-forged’ making it 40 per cent stronger than standard steel.

When the watch goes on sale it will be available in gold, silver and black and will have an interchangeable strap.

The firm didn’t reveal battery life details but said it would charge wirelessly on a magnetic charging station that will ship with the device. Huawei Watch will be available in more than 20 countries including United States, United Kingdom, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates.

Exact availability and pricing is expected to be announced at a future date in each of these regions separately.

Stephen Ebbett, global director of gadget insurer Protect Your Bubble told MailOnline: ‘2015 is set to be the biggest year yet for high-tech wrist candy, and Huawei’s smart watch is one of the most beautiful so far, if chunky timepieces are your thing.

‘Its sapphire crystal screen, 40 watch faces, and a rather classy optional leather strap make it all too easy to forget that it’s what’s inside that really counts.

‘4GB of internal storage and 512MB of RAM are rumoured to be exactly what the Apple Watch will offer.

‘It looks as though we already have an Apple Watch killer, or at least an arch nemesis powered by Android, on the scene.’

Multi-tasker: And in addition to the heart rate monitor,

the watch has six-axis motion sensor and barometer that automatically detects and

tracks in real-time if a user is walking, running, biking, hiking

or sleeping

THE question on most

Gardener’s lips at present is “How do I maintain my garden during this period of Water

Restrictions and what will work for me?” Not a difficult question to answer but one that requires some dedication on the part of the Home Owner. There are two things that are absolutely essential. One is to keep the root system of your trees and shrubs as cool as possible and the other

is to have a regular feeding programme for both your shrubbery/borders and your lawn.

To keep the root systems cool and to retain as much moisture as possible, you need to either mulch with bark or a thick layer of compost or you need to plant ground covers and hardy seedlings that will

thicken nicely and have the same effect as mulching. There is such a wide range of ground covers available, suitable for every situation from full sun to deep shade.

Please don’t short change your garden when it comes to nutrients. Every six weeks with granular fertilizer and every week or two with a foliar feed on your perennial plants. To apply granular fertilizer, you need to keep a beady eye on the weather and when you can see good rain is likely to fall, that’s

the time you hasten outside and get cracking. And I speak from experience. My little bit of heaven was planted in the first week of December 2014 so is now just on 3 months old and you would think it was planted 2 years ago. We do have the benefit of grey water but nutrients are applied regularly and the results are worth every bit of effort.

So, dear Gardener, don’t despair. The rain will come,

Hazelmere will eventually fill-up and it will be all systems go. Until then, visit your local nurseries and delight in the vast range of plants suitable for the present conditions.

Networking has different meanings to different people, ranging from IT multiple computer solutions to

attending an event and trying to strike up a business conversation with someone you don’t know. At these events, we try to gravitate towards people of like-mind, but all too often it ends up being a waste of time. We ultimately find ourselves steering clear of these gatherings all together, but it does not have to be this way…

If we could find a way to showcase our value upfront, build a meaningful business relationship and allow both parties to benefit, it would all be worth it. In fact, finding just one of these contacts would get us back onto the networking circuit with newfound energy.

Here are a few pointers to help turn these networking events (in all their various forms) into viable business activities:

1. Have a plan. Figure out what you want to accomplish from your networking activities and go about achieving it, one contact at a time. If networking is part of your ongoing business actions (as it should be) then a comprehensive plan is critical

for your success.

2. Ask, don’t tell. People like to speak about themselves – it is their favourite subject! By asking open ended questions, you control the conversation and you are also gathering the most amount of information. On the other hand, the person speaking feels as if they are in control because they are doing the talking and they will enjoy the fact that you are more of a listener – a rare quality these days.

3. Help them first. From the get-go try to gather information about what they do. Then align your business offerings to theirs and see if there is a fit for you to help them achieve more business. This might be through a service provider you do business with or simply another person you have connected with in the room. By helping them first, you fast-track the relationship and establish yourself as a problem solver, rather than a product pusher.

4. Stick to the golden rule. Ask for nothing, give them something of value and leave before you are expected to. As basic as this might seem, few people stick to

this rule when networking. Note that a business card is not something of value that you are giving them. In fact, never give a business card unless you are asked for it.

5. Be authentic. In a slick world where everyone is trying so hard to become Teflon coated, being real or true to yourself is often noticed by the observer and appreciated as being refreshing.

6. Follow up and follow through. Once you begin to connect with like-minded people, you want to follow up by keeping in touch. Activity leads to productivity, which ultimately leads to results. With this in mind, stay focused on steering the relationship in the direction

of a win-win for both parties. Don’t waste time on contacts that do not commit to what they say they will do. Either they do not see the value or they are not motivated enough by this “give to get” relationship.

7. Find a balance. Be sure to find a balance of connections, connectors and friends. Some people will do business with you and others will be better at connecting you to people that want to do business with you. Fill your network with both for maximum impact.

What you progressively do within your network will make a difference not only to your future, but to the future of those you are engaging. It has been said that your network is your net worth!

People who own all-electric cars where coal generates the power may think they are helping the environment.

But a new study finds their vehicles actually make the air dirtier, worsening global warming.

The controversial study raises major questions over the future of 'green' cars.

'unfortunately, when a wire is connected to an electric vehicle at one end and a coal-fired power plant

at the other end, the environmental consequences are worse than driving a normal gasoline-powered car,' said Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution for Science, who wasn't part of the study but praised it.

Driving vehicles that use electricity from renewable energy instead of gasoline could reduce the resulting deaths due to air pollution by 70 percent, it concluded.

Ethanol isn't so green, either, the researchers claimed.

'It's kind of hard to beat gasoline' for public and environmental health, said study co-author Julian Marshall, an engineering professor at the university of Minnesota.

'A lot of the technologies that we think of as being clean ... are not better than gasoline.'

The key is where the source of the electricity all-electric cars.

If it comes from coal, the electric cars produce 3.6 times more soot and smog deaths than gas, because

of the pollution made in generating the electricity, according to the study that is published Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

They also are significantly worse at heat-trapping carbon dioxide that worsens global warming, it found.

The study examines environmental costs for cars' entire life cycle, including where power comes from and the environmental effects of building batteries.

FORD may be known for its cars, but at this year’s Mobile World Congress the auto giant also unveiled a pair of electric bikes.

Both prototypes are powered by 200-watt motors, fold to fit on a train or in the boot of a car, and with pedal assist, help riders reach speeds of up to 25km/h.

The bikes are part of an experiment by Ford called Handle on Mobility, which aims to make journeys safer and more efficient.

They are also part of the company's wider Smart Mobility plan, which is designed to make cars and other vehicles more connected.

The bikes, called MoDe:Me and MoDe:Pro, are based on designs by Ford employees and take inspiration from technology seen in cars.

For example, both bikes are fitted with rear-facing ultrasonic sensors.

These sensors link with the handlebars to discreetly alert the rider when a car is about to overtake using subtle vibrations. These handlebars also light up to make the bikes more visible

to motorists.The MoDe:Me e-bike – built with the

help of bicycle manufacturer Dahon - is designed for commuters ‘to keep moving in congested city traffic’.

It folds and stows easily, allowing commuters to park outside the city, for example, take the e-bike onto public transport and travel to the centre, then ride the e-bike to their destination.

Meanwhile, the MoDe:Pro e-bike – built by a Ford team – is intended for commercial use by couriers, electricians, and goods and delivery services.

It is designed to stow safely into commercial vehicles which can act as carrier and support vehicle, and be combined with more than one e-bike.

Both prototypes work with an called MoDe:Link, which is currently only compatible with the iPhone 6.

This app acts as a sat-nav and sends vibrations to the handlebars so the rider knows when to change direction.

Turn signals are then triggered automatically for safety. The app also finds bike-friendly roads, hazards and alerts, and could ‘communicate’ with

other vehicles. Its multimodal navigation and smart routing lets riders filter journeys based on cost, time, and the amount of cycling required, compared to driving.

This map also shows the weather, parking costs and charging stations.

The electric pedal assist rate can be adjusted based on a cyclist's heart rate and includes a ‘No Sweat’ mode that takes over when requested, meaning the rider can cool down before arriving at their destination.

‘There are so many ways to get around a city, but what is really needed is a way to connect all of these transport options together,’ said Ken Washington, vice president, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering.

‘Being able to seamlessly move between cars, buses, trains and e-bikes and react to changing traffic situations can make a big difference both for commuters and for those delivering goods, services and healthcare.’

There are no immediate plans to release the bikes but Ford said they will help test alternative transportation ideas.
