• The Nile River is the world’s longest river: over 4,000 miles from end to end.• It runs through several African countries and empties into the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Egypt.

How important was the Nile?

• The Nile River is the primary water source for the country of Egypt. Without it, Egypt would be entirely desert land and few humans could live there.

In ancient times, the Egyptians depended on the Nile’s yearly flooding to replenish the fertile soil, which the Egyptians used to grow crops.

How important was the Nile?

• Papyrus reeds grow along the banks of the Nile. Ancient Egyptians used these reeds to make several items, like paper, rope, baskets, furniture, even food and clothing!

• Fish, wild animals, and edible plants could be gathered from the Nile and its banks, which meant a great deal of food for the ancient Egyptians.
