Pastor George,

Thank you so much for supporting THON this year and letting me speak in front of the congregation. I really appreciate it. The donations I received last Sunday have already been put to great use. Some of the money was used to buy dress-up jewelry and prizes for the kids to play with on THON weekends.

Thanks again!

For the kids, Katie Pogue

Congratulations to Jason and Monica Ordanoff on the birth of their son, Jett Joseph and Steve and Christie Hanawalt who welcomed their daughter Finley.

Dear Linglestown Life,

Thank you so much for the beautiful flowers sent for the birth of our son, Jett. We also really appreciated all the cards, phone calls, meals, and hospital visit from Pastor George.

Dear George,

Please convey my appreciation to the Church Council and people at Linglestown Life for participating at the 100% level in Shares of Ministry in 2008! This is up from 75% in 2007 and 66% in 2006.

Thanks to the people for their effort and to you for your leadership. A lot of good ministry is done in the name of Christ as we all work together. Blessings, Debbie

Clara Rowe following the passing of her brother Leroy Motter.

Written in Black  Continued from page 1 As a young bride and mother I made my very first airplane trip from Memphis to Syracuse, N.Y. to attend a grandfather’s funeral. I was traveling with my five month old baby daughter and had to change planes in New York City. Mothers and grandmothers know the fatigue of trying to carry a baby, diaper bag and sometimes a purse. I was walking through the airport and was about ready to cry. I just did not have the strength to carry everything. Suddenly three young girls approached me and asked if they could help. It was an instant relief! I regained my strength and could continue on my way. I'm sure those girls would be shocked to know I remember their kindness forty years later. Thank you girls! There are still people with tender hearts who treat others with random acts of kindness and love. Maybe we can make it our goal to do the same. Imagine seeing a mailing label on each forehead you see. It reads, “Fragile, Handle With Care!” ~ Pam Davis, FaithWriters.com

Lent Lent is the special 40-day period before Easter (not counting Sundays). Lent, from the word Spring, is a unique time for us to take inventory of our lives, commune more intimately with God, and clear out those things that may distract us from our commitment to him. Lent is one of the most ancient Christian practices. The early church observed Lent even before Christmas became a holiday. In this 40-day period before Easter it is a season of preparing for spiritual growth. The Lenten season of 2009 begins on Wednesday, February 25, with the Ash Wednesday worship service. We invite you to join us on this Lenten journey as we move toward the turning point of the journey at Easter.

Ash Wednesday Sermon: Preparing Our Garden for Growth Text: 2 Chronicles 15 For a lot of people, Lent is a season for making resolutions. They give up chocolate or sweets. They're going to pray more, or actually go to church every Sunday. Beyond that, many of us have little understanding of what Lent is about. This message will help us understand and engage this season more appropriately. A Lenten Invitation Beginning, Wednesday, March 4 and each Wednesday through April 8; you are invited to receive the communion elements at Linglestown Life between the hours of 7:00 am and 10:30 am. Communion will be available in a format known as silent communion. During this time you may enter the sanctuary and receive the elements of communion and pause for a time of silent prayer and mediation. Resources will be provided for you to use this time for personal reflection. This is your opportunity and you are welcome to use it as you desire in this Lenten season. Lenten Sermon Series: The Passions of Christ Beginning Sunday, March 1 we’ll explore the passions of Jesus. We’ve sought how to understand the passion of the church and how we are called to be passionate disciples; but what were the passions of Jesus’ life. Jesus Passions His Relationship with the Father - Mk 1:35; Luke 5:16; John 5:19, 20 The Kingdom of God – Matthew 6:33 Compassion for the Hurting - Mark 6:34 Serving Others – John 4:34, Mark 10:45 Telling the Story – Matthew 28:20

HARRISBURG DISTRICT URBAN WORKCAMP Be A

Volunteer In Mission in Central PA

Sunday, July 12 – Friday, July 17, 2009 Sunday, August 2 – Friday, August 7, 2009

For all who have been anxiously awaiting another opportunity to serve, we offer two great weeks in the summer of 2009. This is the first of what we hope will be an annual experience of helping those with need in the capital of our state. Our goal is to provide a faithful witness for Jesus Christ while creating opportunities for individuals and congregations to work cooperatively. With so many talented and skilled individuals who long to make an impact in our world for Jesus Christ, this is your opportunity. We hope to serve the elderly, homebound, and economically struggling of the community. As the economy tightens, some can afford supplies but not labor costs and are extremely thankful for a helping hand to accomplish many minor tasks. More than merely completing home repair projects, our hope is to create joy and fellowship with those who we serve. How can you help? We need volunteers to come for either or both of these weeks who have a willing spirit and time and talent to share. Individuals should have completed 6th grade in school, all ages beyond this are acceptable.

Other ways to help: We invite individuals or congregations to make donations for building materials to the District Project or consider purchasing gift cards at LOWE’S or HOME DEPOT for whatever amount you can afford that we may use for materials. We will need congregations to supply bag lunches and to supply snacks for morning and afternoon breaks. We will need other congregations to prepare evening meals and to supply evening snacks. Additionally we need individuals willing to go for supplies and individuals with first aid or nurse’s training to be available daily. Do not let age be a hindrance, there is work for everyone.

We encourage all volunteers to lodge with our teams in local churches to assist in team building. However, for local folks who desire to sleep at home, we are asking for your firm commitment to be present for each evening meal and for morning devotional time. The cost for each week is $75 per person with lodging, $30 per person if you are commuting. Please complete the registration form and return it with your payment as soon as possible to facilitate accommodations and work schedules. Last day to register, May 1st.

While this is a Harrisburg District project, correspondence and finances will be processed through

Calvary U.M. Church. Please send all registrations to the following address with all Checks made payable: “Calvary UMC.” Please be sure to note Harrisburg District Project on the check memo line.

Please visit the mission bulletin board for the application.

DiscipleMakers  A Young DiscipleMaker I (Carin) first met Jen during her freshman year. We met together a couple times. Her attitude then communicated that she had life all figured out. She eventually joined a Bible study, but only so that people would stop inviting her. She mostly thought of herself as better than the people she met through DiscipleMakers. Then when some of her friends from home began to attend DiscipleMakers Christian Fellowship meetings, Jen tagged along. We were studying Romans that semester. Jen realized she was hearing things that made her mad. She was hearing the call of Scripture to set aside her own agenda and re-orient her life toward Christ. She realized she didn’t have life figured out, and started asking lots of questions. By March of her freshman year she had committed her life to Christ, while her friends chose the way of the world.

Since then, Jen has become one of the most teachable people I know. As I’ve discipled her I’ve seen her learn to contemplate everything she hears from the Word and to ask the Lord to help her change in response. She is one who is quick to see her sin, to repent, and to seek accountability and help. As she’s grown in her relationship with Christ, she’s developed a deep longing for those around her to know Him too. The Lord has given her a passion to make Him known and is teaching her how to love people well by speaking the truth while allowing the Spirit to be the one to change them. More and more, Jen’s life is being transformed as she experiences the freedom of the gospel and reflects that freedom to her peers. Now a junior, Jen is one of the key leaders in the DiscipleMakers Christian Fellowship at Penn State. She leads women in Bible study, helping her classmates and dorm-mates investigate the Scriptures, meet Jesus, and learn about His love for them. Earlier this month, Jen was baptized along with nine other members of our church (many of whom became Christians as students through DiscipleMakers’ ministry.) In the testimony she shared with everyone there, she contrasted her former non-committal attitude toward the Lord with current intentions, declaring, “I’m in it for the long haul!” Praise the Lord for His faithful love for us sinners! And thank you for helping us to go to the campus so that we can be part of His work! Yours in Christ, Brian and Carin

Pawsabilities  Please come out and support the Susquehanna Services dogs by attending the Pawsabilties event at the Farm Show Complex on Saturday, March 14th and Sunday, March 15th. SSD raises, trains, and places dogs to assist people with disabilities. To either attend, volunteer, or sponsor please visit www.keystonehumanservices.org/ssd or contact Richele Herigan at 599-6116.

Dear Friends of Linglestown Christian Nursery School,

“As Christians and members of Christian families, we are called to find God in our lives and follow the ways of Christ and His Church. Lent is a special time of seeking God. Lent is about renewing ourselves in Christ.” by Steve & Sue Givens.

Many families use this time to focus on preparing themselves spiritually for Easter. Adults might fast and give the money saved to a soup kitchen. Your entire family can consider any wasteful habits. Other families devote time to a favorite charity. Modeling service to others does more to teach your children about giving than simply talking about giving. You might also set aside additional time for family devotions and family prayers.

Yours for reaching and teaching children for Christ, Nancy L. Cartwright Lenten Mission Project LCNS is pleased to announce that our Lenten Mission Project for 2009 will be Susquehanna Service Dogs. We are delighted to partner with one of our Nursery School alumni, Anita Currier. Anita has worked with SSD for many years and continues to train dogs. During the month of March we will be collecting: can tabs, Bleach, latex dog toys, Kirkland dog food (Costco), dog biscuits, especially Pupperoni brand (no rawhides). We will send our donations with Anita and “Charlotte” when they visit on March 15 & 16. They will demonstrate the skills these dogs use to help others. Staff Corner Several staff members attended a training session at the Intermediate Unit.

A number of staff members will be at the Early Education Conference at Willow Valley on March 13. Please keep them in your prayers as they continue their education.

Mrs. Cartwright will be presenting a session on “Child Protection Staff Training.”

Each year the staff at LCNS must complete 12 hours of training and we are proud of the time these ladies devote to updating their skills and knowledge. News from the 2 year olds: Angels, Cherubs, Two by Two and Little Lambs “Sing praises to the Lord.” (Psalm 9:11)

We have several green projects planned for St. Patrick’s Day and we will talk about leprechauns...we may even catch one!

We will learn to thank God for a place to live and even thank Him for the car seats which keep us safe. Pajama Day is always a blast!! We will be sure to thank God for our beds and pillows on that day!

Mrs. Lambert, Mrs. Liddick, Mrs. Erb, Mrs. Gibbs & Mrs. Flickinger, Mrs. Ormsbee News from the 3 year olds: Shepherds, Fishermen, Noah’s Ark, Kingdom Kids & Rainbows “We must obey God. “Acts 5:29

The children will once again be enjoying several St. Patrick’s Day activities and crafts. Our Second Step lessons are “Choosing an Idea”, “Is it working?” and “Sharing”.

Jimmy and Candi puppets teach the children about forgiveness and obedience. March will also include our famous Pajama Day!

Our Bible focus will on Jonah & his disobedience to God. We will also begin the telling of the Easter story in hopes each child will be able to gain understanding the real meaning of Easter.

The resurrection eggs will help reinforce the story.

Comments from our most recent parent survey How does Linglestown Life Church, through the school, reach out to your family? ☺LCNS has made such a positive impact on our child which filters through to us, and then out into the world. Thank you for helping us raise a happy, healthy (physically, mentally, and spiritually), child.

☺They make us feel very welcome day to day and at all the special events throughout the year.

☺The members and staff of Linglestown Life are welcoming, inviting and present in activities of the school as well as the cafe. They create a warm Christian environment/community for the children as well as the parents. We enjoy the invites to church activities for families and children. We are active in our church but enjoy being included as extended family of Linglestown Life Church as well!

☺I love the cafe and have been able to connect with other moms that I would not have without it

☺I really think the new email newsletter is a wonderful addition to the 08-09 school year!

☺The school is wonderful, and the teachers are exceptional. It is quite evident that they genuinely care about each and every child that attends. Thank you!

☺Coffee area, great place to talk to other moms and people that might go to church at Linglestown LIFE

☺This school gives my child a Christian base and lets him have fun learning all at the same time...

☺They are very informative and have a lot of opportunities available for families to get involved.

What does LCNS do best? ☺Excellent teachers

☺Provide spiritual growth and provide learning that is based on incidental learning, rather than forcing the child to learn in a way that makes them dislike academics

☺Communication via newsletter and the internet calendar

☺Provide a safe environment for learning.

☺Identify the uniqueness in each child and work with the child and the parents to help each student learn and shine.

☺Preparing children spiritually and helping with social skills

☺Provide early Christian education experience with lots of love

☺Offer a fun, safe, and inviting environment for both the students and staff. ☺Structure; putting correct emphasis on appropriate social and emotional development

☺Educates in a caring, Christian-based way!

☺Provides a healthy atmosphere for my child to socialize with children his age

In the 8th century B.C., a prophet of God condemned the sinfulness of many of Jerusalem’s citizens. On behalf of God, he chastised anyone who abused power, was unjust toward the poor and used bribes and position to gain money and status. He even condemned prideful women who walked “with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, mincing along as they go, tinkling with their feet.” (He was referring to little bells attached to women’s ankles.) Who was that prophet? A. Isaiah B. Amos C. Hosea D. Jeremiah

Answer: A (See 3:16 ff, NRSV, of the book with the prophet’s name.)

Safe Sanctuaries Corner  Dear friends of children and youth, TO OUR VOLUNTEERS: Joy Thornburg Melton has published an updated book entitled “Safe Sanctuaries, Reducing the risk of abuse in the church for children and youth.” It is available at Cokes bury for $25.00. This book is a valuable resource for anyone who works with children, youth and vulnerable adults. She has combined two previous books (one on children and one on adults) and added an additional chapter on vulnerable and additional resources. I am in the process of updating our current policy. This new resource will be invaluable as we look to the future. Something new for us as a church to consider is a policy on social networking and blogging as it relates to our employees and volunteers. TO OUR FAMILIES: Parents, be sure you sign your children in and out of every activity at LLUMC. Youth, be sure you sign in and out of every youth activity. Also, be sure your emergency contact information is up-to-date with your staff person or leader (Yvonne Barbush, Children’s ministry, Annie Garner, Youth Ministry, Jeanne Chubb, Music ministry) Nancy L. Building Committee Update February 22, 2009

This is a brief overview of where the proposed building project stands at this point in time and what lies ahead. The Architect – Althouse Jaffe and Associates Jack Althouse and his team have been refining the proposed floor plans and preparing elevation drawings to provide the Building Committee with proposed ideas for the master plan. The Construction Mgr – Arthur Funk and Sons, Inc. The Building Committee selected AF&S to serve in the role of Construction Manager. AF&S is currently working with the architect to prepare preliminary building costs and to provide suggestions for functionality. The Land Development Process – CEDG The civil engineering firm CEDG has led us through our first Township approval of the project. This presentation to the LP Zoning Hearing Board was made in December 2008 and provided the church a special exception required by the zoning code. A second presentation is currently before the LP Planning Commission regarding land use requirements. This plan details how we propose to deal with storm water management. Stewardship Campaign – Injoy Stewardship Srvs. ISS and Linglestown Life’s campaign team have begun planning for a stewardship campaign in April and May. The stewardship campaign will enable us to determine the scope of the proposed building project. Conference and Congregational Approvals Once the Building Committee has compiled all of the above details a presentation of the building plan will be presented to the people of Linglestown Life and the Harrisburg District Building Committee for formal approval.
