Outdoor Adventure Camp is a funfilled week of outdoor activities youdon’t want to miss. This camp isheld at Loyd Park on beautiful JoePool Lake. Some of the fun thingsyou’ll get to try your hand at are:archery, angling, canoeing, kayak-ing, GPS tracking, sailing, moun-tain biking, hiking,rock climbing,and camping.Some of thelearn-

ing experiences will include; waterquality testing, GPS devices, farmliving, fossil collecting, and pitchinga tent.

Ages: 9 -17 yearsPrice: $80/ week. Limited scholar-ships are available upon approval of

American Red Cross Learn To Swim Lessons

ADULT – (AD)Just starting to swim or want to swim for fitness?This class will teach you everything from floatingto efficient strokes at a personalized speed. Smallclasses for individual attention. Fee: $45.

PRIVATE LESSONS – (PR)All Age One-on-One Attention will focus on whatthe student wants to learn atyour own personal pace.Fee: $90.

FIRST SPLASH – (FS)This “Mommy/Daddy & Me”program helps young chil-dren ages 6 months to 3 yrsbecome comfortable in andaround the water with help.An adult is required to par-ticipate. Fee: $30.

LEVEL 0 – (L0) A 30 min. preschool class foryoung beginners to introduce swimming in a safe and comfortableway for all. This group lesson is without a guardian in the water.Fee: $35.

LEVEL 1 – (L1) A 30 min. water exploration class to teach the basics of assistedswimming, as well as an orientation to the deep water. Studentswill be without a guardian in the water and must be comfortableputting their face in the water. Fee: $35.

LEVEL 2 – (L2)A 40 min. primary skills class teaches the basic skills necessary toprogress toward swimming unassisted. Students must be comfort-able fully submerged in areas where they can touch. Fee: $45.

LEVEL 3 – (L3)A 40 min. stroke readiness class that builds on the skill of coordi-nating front and back strokes while increasing basic endurance.Swimmers must be able to push off the wall unassisted swimmingfront crawl and backstroke for 10 strokes. Fee: $45.

LEVEL 4 – (L4) A 40 min. class on stroke development of the basic front andback strokes while introducing breaststroke, sidestroke, dol-

phin kick, treading water and front dives. Students should be ableto swim the width of the pool. Fee: $45.

LEVEL 5/6 – SPLASH Recreational Swim Team –A 60 min. fun filled practice designed to introduce swimming as a

The Farmers Market will have anew home this summer in MarketSquare at the northeast corner ofNW 2nd and Main streets. Thisone-half-acre park will feature abuilding with bays for vehicles tosell produce and other goods.Landscaping, benches and a paved

area will provide a space for out-door entertainment. MarketSquare is currently under construc-tion and the Farmers Market isscheduled to open there in latesummer. The Farmers Market is currentlyopen every Saturday in GrandPrairie, 8 a.m. to sellout, in CityHall Plaza, one block north of 300W. Main St., between NW 3rd andNW 4th streets. The FarmersMarket will go back to the fullschedule of Thursdays andSaturdays beginning June 4. Themarket will continue in City HallPlaza until Market Square is com-pleted.

On the GrowSite work continues on the 172-acre Central Parksite on SH 161 between Warrior Trail andArkansas Lane. The last in a series of lakes isunder excavation. The park will be the home ofthe city new Public Safety Building and ActiveAdult Center. The structure of the new PublicSafety Building has been topped out and is readyfor framing, roofing and other elements that willenclose the building’s walls. The center, sched-uled to open in April 2010, will house Police

Administration, FireAdministration,

Criminal Investigations, Field Operations andSupport Services, Jail, Police/FireCommunications, Records, Property andEvidence and CommunityRelations…Construction is in the early stages onthe new Lake Parks Rescue Facility, the replace-ment building for the current Fire Station #7.The site has been cleared, and pier drilling hasbegun. The current station will be moved fromMatthew Road to Lake Ridge Parkway near theLynn Creek Park entrance for improvement ofresponse times. Also included will be a PoliceDepartment component for the Lake PatrolDivision and a Parks Department componentthat will feature an information kiosk, offices, a

conference room and second floor for futureexpansion. The complex is scheduled to be com-plete in April 2010. The foundation and piershave been poured for the new Active AdultCenter, which will be full of amenities for adultsages 50 and older. The 59,000 square-foot facili-ty will feature an indoor aquatics center, smallgym, fitness area, classrooms, a theater and ban-quet room. The center is scheduled to open inApril 2010…A new outdoor garden special eventarea is now open at the Ruthe Jackson Center.The garden features a wedding pavilion, lawn,pond and creek with waterfall, trees, sidewalksand landscaping.

Market Square Opensin Late Summer

SH 161 Frontage roads fromI-20 to Carrier Parkway areopen. (Frontage roads stop atthe railroad tracks north andsouth on Jefferson and MainStreets. The railroad cross-ings will be completed at alater date.) All main lanesand frontage roads between I-30 and SH 183 are scheduledto be complete by 2010.

Construction for main lanesfrom I-20 to I-30 will beawarded by TxDOT in summer2009 with construction sched-uled to be complete by early2012.

I-30Construction contracts for

ramp relocations on BeltLine and MacArthur will

be awarded in late 2009.The off ramps will be moved

back and frontage roads willbe built. Construction isscheduled to be complete inlate 2010.

I-20 A concept plan is cur-rently in the approval phase atTxDOT for frontage roads fromCarrier to Belt Line eastboundand westbound.

Great Southwest Parkwayat I-20 Design is complete toadd right and left turn lanesfrom Sara Jane Parkway toBardin Road. Constructioncontracts were awarded byTxDOT in November 2008 andconstruction is scheduled to becomplete in late 2009.

Lake Ridge Parkway will bewidened to six lanes fromGreat Southwest Parkway toJoe Pool Lake at Lynn CreekMarina. Construction is sched-uled to begin in late 2009 andcomplete by late 2010.

Camp Wisdom RoadConstruction on an extensionfrom Robinson Road to CarrierParkway will begin in late2009 and is scheduled to becomplete in late 2010.

Mayfield RoadReconstruction has begun fromSH 360 to Great SouthwestParkway. The new road willinclude drainage improve-ments and two lanes eachdirection with a center turnlane. The intersection ofMayfield Road and GreatSouthwest Parkway will bewidened and is scheduled tobe complete in early 2010.

January LaneDesign work is complete onthe extension of January Laneand right-of-way acquisition isunderway. Construction isscheduled to begin in summer2009.

Arkansas LaneConstruction has begun towiden Arkansas Lane to afour-lane divided roadwayfrom Fall Drive to CarrierParkway. The project is

scheduled to be complete inearly 2010.

Warrior Trail Construction isunderway on Warrior Trail fora four-lane divided and undi-vided roadway from GreenVista to Field Crest. The pro-ject is scheduled to be com-plete in early 2010.

Crossland and ForumExtensionThe city is currently designinga four-lane divided thorough-fare from Robinson Road toWaterwood Drive.Construction is scheduled tobegin in late 2009 with com-pletion in late 2010.

Sara Jane ExtensionThe city is currently designinga four-lane undivided roadwayconnecting the current SaraJane Parkway north to ForumDrive. This project will includea bridge over Fish Creek andincludes water, sanitary sewerand drainage improvements.Construction is scheduled tobegin in late 2009 with com-pletion in late 2010.

Texas actress Janine Turner(Northern Exposure, Friday NightLights) helped launch theLibrary’s new Lois Weber FilmCollection in March. Thecollection includes historical andcontemporary films by femaledirectors. Named for one of thefirst successful women directors,the collection of more than 160films shows the exciting varietyof motion pictures directedby women.

The goal is to create a growingcollection that becomes the mostexpansive and diverse library ofmovies directed by women in theworld, supported by books and

research material. This collectionwas made possible by a Lone StarLibraries grant from the TexasState Library.
