Book Club The September Book

Club meeting will be held Thursday, September 15 at 12:15 pm in room 111. We will be discussing the second half of The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. This Pulitzer Prize winning epic of the Great Depression chronicles the dust bowl migration of the 1930s and tells the story of one Oklahoma farm family, the Joads, driven from their homestead and forced to travel west to the promised land of California.

The October Book Club meeting will be held on Thursday, October 20 at 12:15 pm in room 111. For October we will be reading A Man Called Ove by Fredrick Backmen. Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. This is a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul all of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations.

For questions or more information about the Book Club, contact Jeannie Hilt at (408) 984-2266.

From the Desk of Pastor GabeWhy does rest matter? As we approach

Labor Day 2016, it is important to consider the theology of rest that God lays out in the Bible. Labor Day was instituted late in the 19th century by the Labor Movement in an effort to push back against the long hours and endless striving brought on by the industrial revolution. With our (somewhat) balanced modern work weeks, Labor Day simply signals the end of summer with pool parties and hot dogs. However, over a hundred years ago, it was a rare glimpse of rest in an unrelenting working world.

It is strange but necessary that we need to remind ourselves not to work. Our human nature is to strive and to toil often times without rest. That is why God models rest for us in the creation account. God rested not out of necessity but as an example for us. Additionally, God formalized rest when he commanded us to keep the Sabbath holy. This is not an esoteric concept or a minor law summoned by those with poor work ethics. Rest is important to God.

If we know we need rest and if God commands rest, then why is rest so hard?

Rest is hard because rest requires faith. When you rest, you are doing many things in your relationship to God. You are acknowledging that he provides even when you aren’t at work. You are acknowledging he is control even when you aren’t active. You are acknowledging that he sees all even when your eyes are closed. Rest is a moment of release and surrender. Rest is a theological statement unto itself.

Having returned from my sabbatical, I want to express many thanks to the people of SFC for allowing me to rest. My sabbatical was both restful and productive, and I am thrilled to be back with you. This time away allowed me to gather my thoughts regarding sermons and vision for the coming year. This break also allowed me to put the finishing touches on my doctoral project and complete my Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Seminary. But more than anything, I was reminded of rest. I rested in the fact that SFC is God’s church and not mine - and that he would care for it. Rest requires faith because it makes us let go and trust God.

Get some rest this week!Gabe Gilliam

Family Ministry Summer 2016 We are thankful! The Family Ministry team was busy this summer, and we want to share and show you what we are thankful for and what we are excited about for the coming school year.We are thankful for:• Three boats of high school students

and leaders who went to Shasta where they lived in Christian community and grew in their relationship with Jesus.

• Two LifeHouse graduates who served on volunteer staff with SonShine Ministries (houseboats) this summer: Brennan Galleher and Charis Beck.

• Our summer high school prayer ministry that saw students meeting weekly to pray for each other.

• Our four fantastic Summer Staff: Ben King, Jennie Hahn, Edward Ruby and Heather Lindsay.

• Our amazing volunteers who supported the program.

• The families who hosted youth events for us: Sandra Tang, the Bloughs, the Petersons, the Sells, the Harts and the Lees.

• The All Church Retreat where we were able to gather together and learn from each other.

• 24 junior high school students who participated in Senior Serve where they prepared gift baskets for seniors and shut-ins of the SFC community. They made connections with senior citizens who were so grateful for their visit and willingness to share the love of Jesus with them.

• Seven students who gave their lives to Christ at MadHouse Lumberjack Camp in the Redwoods of Mendocino this summer.

• Day Camp – We had two weeks of Day Camp where kids connected with each other, played games led by their teen mentors and grew in their faith!

• Park Days –Parents connected and kids played at park days this summer extending our Christian community outside of church!

• Mount Hermon – We had 15 kids from SFC go to Mount Hermon’s Redwood camp together!

We are looking forward:• To students growing in their

knowledge of God in our weekly programs from Jr. High Studio Nites, High School small groups and Sunday morning discipleship.

The Arts of Spiritual Conversation

Have you ever wanted to have a meaningful conversation about God with people who believe differently? Perhaps you didn’t know how to begin a conversation or were worried that you might know “all the answers.” Help is available! There are nine practices to help start and continue a conversation over time (rather than shut it down). Christians can engage

every day in these same nine practices. If you would like to be part of our next conversational training, please contact Sally Bryant at [email protected] or (408) 867-1000 ext. 233. We will look at the Whys, Whats and Hows of these nine arts, so we can follow Jesus in living them out.

Life GroupsWe strongly encourage each person

who calls Saratoga Federated Church “home” to be part of a Life Group. We believe life thrives when you share life together in a Life Group. New groups are forming now. Sign up with Sally Bryant at [email protected] or (408) 867-1000 ext. 233. Look for us on the courtyard in September!

Evening Life Group for MomsMoms, are you looking to grow friendships with other women? Walk more closely with Jesus in the midst of your busy days? Then join us every other Monday at the home of Michele Ruby at 7:15 pm. The group is reading Discerning the Voice of God: How to Recognize When He Speaks by Priscilla Shirer. If you’ve ever felt the ability to hear God’s voice is for other people and not for you, or only for people who lived in Biblical times, then come join this study. The God who loved you enough to die for you loves you enough to talk to you. Wherever you are in your spiritual walk, God will find a way to speak to you in a way you will understand. Become acquainted with the voice that has spoken from a fire and a cloud; with visible signs and an invisible spirit; through a burning bush and burning hearts. Hear from some of the most well-known Christians in history about how God speaks to them, and discover for yourself how you can discern the voice of God. For more information, contact Michele Ruby at [email protected] or (408) 621-1662.

Worship MinistriesGiving Credit Where Credit Is Due

I recently spent a day in Yosemite, one of my favorite places. Diane and I spent our honeymoon there. My family used to camp there. My uncle was one of the people who used to help push the embers over Glacier Point for the Fire Falls. We’ve taken our boys there countless times to play in the river, to play in the snow, to take climbing lessons. We were there when Yosemite Valley experienced the 100-Year Flood. We’ve attended the Bracebridge Dinner. We wrote a Christmas musical set in Yosemite. We’ve taken hundreds of pictures and never tire of sharing our adventures and love of the place with others. We ascribe worth to Yosemite.

Psalm 96:7-8 says, “Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength! Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts!”

Worship is defined as ascribing worth to God. It’s not defined or limited to any specific action or context; rather, it uses every means and expression available to us through all kinds of gifts: music, instruments, movement, art, color, light, sound and language! It’s giving credit to God for all that he is and does. It is not stuck in a rut or old-fashioned or boring. It’s each one of us telling each other what we know and love and experience about God in our lives and in our world.

There are lots of ways to get involved in Worship Ministries at SFC. Take Psalm 96 to heart and sign up!Kids Choir

All kids, from kindergarten through fifth grade, are welcome to participate in this training ground for worshippers. It’s a fast-paced, energetic

hour of movement, singing, learning music fundamentals, making friends and imbedding God’s word in young hearts. SFC kids are joined by a good number of kids from our community, and the diversity is exciting. Lindsay

Roush, our 9:30 am service worship leader, holds a Masters degree in music and is incredibly gifted at bringing music education to a kid’s level. She’s

engaging, fun and the kids love her. This fall they’ll be singing in church

twice and preparing for their part in our annual Christmas in Saratoga event to be held on December 9, 10 and 11. Kids Choir has their kick-off on Wednesday, September 21, 5:15-6:15 pm in Douglass Hall. For more information, email Diane Allison at [email protected]:30 Worship Team

Lindsay and Iain Roush head up this team with skill, an encouraging spirit and a passion for authenticity in worship. Participation on this team requires an interview/audition. They

would love to engage and welcome more people to join them, both instrumental and vocal. This team works on a rotating schedule and rehearses on Sunday mornings at 8:30 am, prior to leading worship at the 9:30 am service. For more information, email Diane Allison at [email protected] or Lindsay Roush at [email protected].

Choir and OrchestraThese groups lead worship each

Sunday in our 11:00 am service and are the backbone of most of our seasonal music and drama events. They rehearse on Wednesday evenings and kick off their season on September 7. The beauty of the Choir is that we really are better together! We are a perfect example of people who don’t feel they have much to offer, but when all of our voices join as one, we end up offering something much greater than the sum of all our parts! The camaraderie is great and some have told me that

rehearsal is one of the high points of their week.

A high-school level of reading music for your instrument is needed to be part of the orchestra, though we have welcomed younger players as a training ground. The Choir and Orchestra normally practice separately for part of the rehearsal then we join together to put on the finishing touches. We’d

really love to welcome some new faces to our ranks! Currently we could really use clarinet, low brass or

string players in the Orchestra. For more information, email Diane Allison at [email protected] or (408) 867-1000 ext. 238. And more…

For those of you who prefer a way to serve behind-the-scenes, there are a myriad of ways to serve…and your help would be

welcome! Training is provided, where needed:

The Confidence TrapDuring my sabbatical, I read an

interesting work by David Runciman titled The Confidence Trap. Runciman spends a great deal of time laying out the beauty and the dilemma of modern democracy and then takes the reader through several episodes in American history with a critical eye on democracy. At the core of this book, is how this vast system of governance can lead to a confidence trap. We can be overly confident in what we think we know or we can become utterly without confidence in what we think can be done. Both paths are dangerous.

As I was reading the Gospel of Mark, I was struck by two polarities. There are those who are certain about what they know and think about God (Pharisees and the disciples). Then there are those who have little faith in what God can do even though miracles abound. This led me to realize there is a bit of a confidence trap that exists when it comes to faith.

If we aren’t careful, we can rest on our theological laurels without any openness to new things God may be speaking to our hearts. On this path, we are overly confident in our finite abilities to contain an infinite God. Conversely, we can easily get programmed to expect very little from God in the way of miracles and provision. This line of thinking leads to a certain kind of spiritual resignation that has no appetite or expectation for God to do anything out of the norm. Both of these paths are dangerous.

The spiritual confidence trap is real. We can become reckless or resigned spiritually and neither one is okay. From September 11 through December 18, we will be studying the first eight chapters of Mark’s Gospel. I pray that you will begin to read this powerful book and begin to learn about the true confidence we can have in God.Gabe Gilliam

Praying Together(part 4 of 4)

How do we become healthy, life-giving people? Thad Harris provided a wonderful response to this question when he visited SFC last year to talk about Life Groups. Drawing from the Book of Acts, Thad focused our attention on four devotional habits that help us to be healthy, Christ-affirming Life Groups rather than people going through the motions. In Acts 2:42-47, Luke describes how a crowd of believers responded to Peter’s teaching from the Scriptures.

They were continually devoting themselves to the apostle’s teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer . . . praising God . . . and the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. Acts 2:42-47

In this fourth article in our Healthy Life Groups series, let’s focus on prayer.

When we come together as Life Groups, no two people have the same prayers, praises or petitions. No two people pray the same way and that’s okay.

We pray because Jesus prayed for us. We give praise because Jesus praised God in all things. We lift up our petitions because Jesus lifted his to the Father.

In the thick of events, in the dark moments, Jesus prayed. In the midst of miracles, Jesus gave the glory to God.

When we devote ourselves to prayer, we meet God. As we enter humbly into prayer, with hands lifted up, we ask God to lead. When we pray together, we invite God into the heart of our Life Group. He binds us together for good purpose.

And we pray every prayer in the sweet name of Jesus our Savior. Amen.

Consider discussing praying about and practicing the four devotional habits in your Life Group. If you are not yet in a group but would like to be, we encourage you to contact Sally Bryant at sally@ saratogafederated.org or (408) 867-1000 ext. 233.Robin Shepherd
