Hello Church!This Lenten Season the

song “Lord Prepare Me to Be a Sanctuary” has been making regular appearances … either in worship planning or in my personal Lenten time.

Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary,

Pure and holy, tried and true. With thanksgiving, I'll be a living

Sanctuary for You.

I sang this song a lot as I was getting ready to go into seminary, nearly ten years ago now. I don't know where I first learned it, but it remains a go-to song when I feel like God is preparing me or us as Christ's church to be vehicles of the Holy Spirit's activity among us. It appeals to me, I think, because I, like so many other children of God and followers of Jesus, have come to realize there is really nothing I can do to make myself a worthy vessel of that activity—only God can do that. And, even more astounding, is that God does choose to make us a sanctuary. I can never be completely “pure and holy” or “tried and true,” but God recognizes enough of that in me to go forth anyway. God recognizes that in you too.

It is you, Lord, who came to save us,The heart and soul

of every one.It is you, Lord,

Who knows my weaknessWho gives me strength

with thine own hand.

Lead me on, Lord, from temptation,

Purify me from within.Fill my heart with your Holy Spirit,

You take away all my sin.

When I sang this at my mom's house just before Lent, I realized the verses are perfect for Lent. The lyrics remind us that God chose salvation for us, not because we deserved it, not because we didn't deserve it, but solely because that is what God wants. Think about that for a minute. It's incredible. No matter how often we go to God asking to we washed of our sin, God still wants salvation for us. No matter how often we act the fool and behave like we forgot what God has done for us in Jesus, God still wants this salvation for us. That's crazy, isn't it? But it is true.

And so why wouldn't we think of ourselves as a sanctuary? I thought about the definition: places of refuge or safety. The world needs this desperately and always. In praying God prepares us to be a place of refuge and safety, we find our own respite in the divine space God carves out in each of us. And we offer that place to others through our words and actions. From that sanctuary we may offer a kind word, an accepting ear, a word of

forgiveness and grace, a lee side in a storm, a different choice, a way of seeing humanity a little more like God see us.

We can see sanctuary in us as a tent God pitches. (This is the literal meaning of the Hebrew word “abide.” And so when we sing or pray that God “abide in us” we are literally inviting God to pitch a tent in us.) In that tent we are sheltered from the storm of our sin and those who sin against us. In that tent is a warm fire fueled by the salvation God has chosen for us. In that tent are our scriptures which remind us over and over again let go of fear. In that tent are enshrined those commandments Jesus gave us to love God with everything and all we have, and to love each other in ways that the world may say are silly or foolish, but ways that make God rejoice in us.

My prayer for you as we continue though this Lenten season is that you find new ways to open yourself up to God pitching that tent in you and that you rejoice with God in all the ways that breathes life into you and those you encounter.

Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary,

Pure and holy, tried and true. With thanksgiving,

I'll be a livingSanctuary for You.

God's peace to you. Your sister in Christ, Pastor Ann

Deferred Charitable Gift Annuities are a way for middle-aged and older persons to plan gifts to ELCA ministries while providing themselves with a future life income. The longer one can defer the payout from a gift annuity, the higher the resulting income percent for the life of the donor(s). Further, an income tax deduction is received when the deferred gift annuity is entered, and a significant portion of the annual income from the annuity is received tax-free when payments begin. If the intent to make a gift exists, when compared with the historical rates of return of fixed investments (and indeed the current fixed investment rates), ELCA deferred gift annuities represent a significant opportunities for future life income.

Speaking of Stewardship ...ELCA FoundationGift Planning Notes

ELCA Advocacy Priorities 2018

To Renewable Energy: The transition away from fossil fuels will mean changes in the economic livelihood of individuals, families and communities directly and indirectly dependent upon this industry. This transition must include comprehensive planning that incorporates methodologies on how we get from where we are today to where we need to be.

Affordable Housing/Homelessness: Homelessness and the lack of affordable housing continue to be systemic issues that affect many people in our communities. Investments in affordable housing and rental assistance provide stability that can help families overcome serious barriers, such as affording better health care and education, reducing food insecurity, and recovering after natural disasters.

Criminal Justice Reform: The United States has the largest prison population in the world. Many incarcerated men and women who commit non-violent drug offenses are sentenced to harsh and unjustly long prison terms. These policies result in considerably high prison populations and disparities in sentencing for drug offenses, disproportionately affecting communities of color. Legislation that reforms sentencing and provides resources for returning citizens will directly reduce recidivism rates and prison populations.

Medicaid, Medicare And Social Security: Congress and the administration may embark on efforts to dismantle three critical safety-net programs that have existed for over 50 years. Medicaid is the largest health insurance program in the U.S. that serves the poorest families and individuals. Medicare was created in 1965 to provide health care coverage for individuals aged 65 and older. Social Security provides monthly cash benefits to retired or disabled workers and their family members and to the family members of deceased spouses or parents.

Life in EdenServing the Church …

You want me to do what? Each year, ELCA churches,

including Eden-on-the-Bay, hold an annual meeting. At that meeting, the congregation typically reviews the ministry, finances and general goings-on of the faith community during the previous year. The congregation also reviews and votes on a budget for the following year and considers the ways God is calling them into ministry among themselves, the community they serve and the world all around.

Each year, the Nominating Committee leaps into action prior to this meeting, putting together a list of members willing to serve in elected roles in the congratulation—at Eden those roles include Congregational Council, Nominating Committee, Altar Guild, Audit Committee and Synod Assembly.

Before the 2018 Annual Meeting, it became apparent that many people didn’t know what those roles entail. So, over the next few months, look to this space for information on those elected

roles. We hope that a better understanding of these roles will help us all prayerfully consider how God may be calling us to serve.

As always, if there are questions or concerns about any of this, contact Pastor Ann. Your questons are always welcome.Let’s start with the nominating committee. First of all, please thank our 2018 committee members: Myra Skorupski, Lesa McAllister, Curt Erickson and Ed Hines.

Those elected to this committee serve a one-year term. The committee is responsible for coming together in the weeks before the annual meeting to fill out a slate of nominees for open elected roles. They do this in conjunction with the Pastor and others in the congregation who may know of good potential candidates for the committee to contact.

Typically, the committee has gathered for one main working meeting in which they get on the phone and ask members of the

congregation to prayerfully consider being nominated. Once the open slots are filled as fully as possible, the Nominating Committee’s report is included in the annual report and used as the basis for elections to those roles. Thanks be to God for the important work of the church these people do … and it sounds like that often have a little fun getting this important task done too!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It used to be that Palm Sunday was a day of celebration. The better part of the worship service was hosannas and palm branches waving. Children and Adults looked forward to this upbeat

worship, especially after 40 days of somber, penitential Lent. And the service acted as a sort of reprieve, before the intensity of Holy Week began.

But then, attendance during the Great Three Days began to decline. Maybe Holy Week was too intense for some. Maybe it was too sad. Maybe these three days somehow were no longer given the focus and attention due them as the central worship of our faith.

Whatever the reason, missing Holy Week meant that folks were experiencing the “happy happy joy joy” of Palm Sunday and then leaping over Holy Week to the “happy happy joy joy” of Easter Sunday. They would completely skip over death, and suffering, and sadness. They would miss the betrayal, the last supper, the crucifixion of Jesus.

And I guess, who can blame folks for wanting to avoid all that grim darkness. We would much rather celebrate and be joyful than sad and somber.

But worship that only considers the happy hosannas and the empty tomb misses the whole point of Christ on the cross and the sin of the world that put him there. There is value in looking at the death of Jesus, in pondering his suffering, and in dwelling on his last hours of life.

Because you know and I know that life is not all “happy happy joy joy.” To worship in Lent, and to dive in to Holy Week is to admit the truth to ourselves, no matter how unpleasant

– that life can be hard, and death can be harder. We live in the shadow and fear of death. We suffer. We sin. We die. And we need saving.

So I am glad that our Lutheran tradition dwells in the darkness, if only for a little while. It is good that our worship reflects the truth of life and the

truth of our faith. Constant joy is not the way things are. And worship that only celebrates feeling good, soon seems hollow, no matter how upbeat the music.

So during Lent and Holy Week we take the time to consider the suffering and death of Jesus. During these 40 days, we sit in the knowledge of our sinfulness and consider our need for God.

And we take this time, not so that we feel condemned and sad, but because death is the only way to new life.

Jumping from Palm Sunday to Easter is like

From the Bishop ...

Changing the World Through Refugee Resettlement

Lutheran Social Services (LSS) Sunday is a day for your congregation to learn about and celebrate how your support for LSS changes lives in the community.

Recent changes in U.S. immigration policy sharply reduce the number of refugees LSS can help resettle in 2018. We expect to resettle about 260 refugees in Wisconsin in 2018 – half the planned number. LSS, like other refugee resettlement organizations, receives federal funding on a per-client basis. So, the reduction in the flow of refugees will continue to have a profound effect on the program's finances.

We thank congregations for supporting the Refugee Resettlement Program monitarily, by furnishing housing, and in other ways. The program is a true example of our mission to change the world, one grace-filled life at a time.

Hear what the program means to Omar, a Somali-Bantu refugee grateful to live in Wisconsin with his wife and daughter - video

LSS Adoption Services has a special and long-standing relationship with orphanages in the Philippines. During the past 10 years, LSS matched 30 Filipino orphans with loving U.S. families. Right now, five boys need forever families:

Nathaniel, 2, is adorable, happy, active. He has profound hearing loss in one ear and some cognitive delays, but he walks, runs and feeds himself with little help.

Jeffry, 12, and Jerry, 11, are brothers who love sports. Jeffrey is dependable and trustworthy; Jerry has already proven he is a born leader.

Lawrence, 11, loves superheroes and wants to be a police officer or soldier. He's active and enjoys soccer, basketball and rugby.

Mike, 7, is sweet and affectionate. Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum disorder, he loves running, dancing and does most self-care tasked with little help.

jumping from fall to spring with no winter. Fall and winter are necessary before spring can come. And Jesus must suffer death before he can rise again. There is no resurrection without the crucifixion. There is no rising without dying. Easter joy is real when we admit that death is real. We receive the freedom of forgiveness with relief and gladness if first we understand our need for God’s grace.

So Palm Sunday is now Passion Sunday and our hosannas quickly fade. During Holy Week, we will pause in Jesus’ final hours and give them their due. In our Lutheran tradition there is no escaping the sacrifice and death of Christ.

But then neither do we miss the new life of resurrection and the fullness of Easter joy…

in this life, nor in the life to come.

~Yours in Christ, Bishop Katherine Finegan
