and in a complementary fashion, which our patients really appreciate and this has limited our time to be more involved with Eagle Mountain Social Activities.

Do you have unique family traditions for holidays, special occasions, etc.?We like to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas with our three children and six grandchildren. We also have one great-grandchild in Tulsa, OK, where they all reside. When our parents were all alive, we would travel to be with them in Charleston, SC, and Deming, NM, but with their passing, we have focused on children and grandchildren in more recent years.

Where are your family’s favorite vacation spots?Hawaii (the world-renowned Kahala Resort on Oahu), the mountains of Western North Carolina, Charleston, SC (Dr. Bailey’s home town), and Prescott and Sedona.

Does your family have any favorite sports teams?Dr. Bailey is an adopted son and fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers having lived in Omaha 13 years, and I’m an Oklahoma Sooner Fan. We both love professional golf at the Waste Management Open in Scottsdale and all the major tournaments, especially the Masters, which we last attended in 2001, the final win of the “Tiger Slam” and wholeheartedly support the Arizona Cardinals, Diamondbacks and Suns each season.

Dr. Bailey and Johanna, thanks for being such GREAT members of our Eagle Mountain community and ALL that you do to help others.

meet our neighbors...

Dr. Bailey, what profession are you and Johanna involved in? Johanna and I work in our Concierge Family Medicine and Heart Attack, Diabetes and Stroke Prevention Medical Practice in Scottsdale.

Tell us how long you have been married and how you met? We met in Tulsa, OK, in which Johanna is a native, and I was living in Tulsa while finish-ing his Christian Family Medicine Residency Program. We attended the same church in Tulsa and when the pastor announced in 1999 that he was moving to Scottsdale to start a Church, we both independently decided to relocate to Scottsdale to help start the church. I was recruited by Mayo Clinic as one of their full-time physicians.

After some months of courtship in Scottsdale, we fell deeply in love, became engaged and with our parents’ blessing were married July 1, 2000.

Johanna, how long have you lived in Eagle Mountain and what do you enjoy most about our community? We have lived in Eagle Mountain for nearly 20 years and love the community, how friend-ly and engaging are our neighbors and would not want to live anywhere else in the Valley. In fact, we moved from our original home on Twilight View Drive in February 2015 at the bottom of the street to the very top of the street into a larger home. We loved the neigh-borhood so much when we moved we didn’t even leave the street.

As residents of Eagle Mountain, what are your favorite hobbies, pastime activities?Favorite hobbies include golf, music, operatic and classical singing and travel. Having tak-en care of so many patients over the past 20 years in Fountain Hills and Scottsdale, often a quiet weekend at home is a real respite.

How are you involved in the community? We fully support Eagle Mountain and its upkeep of our beautiful community and our beautiful home. We have successfully worked together in our medical practice since 2003

Celebrating IndependencePre-Fourth Resident Event

What a Way to Bring in the Fourth of July.

Eagle Mountain Residents came together at the VU to celebrate with a Pre-Independence Day celebration.

It was all you can eat from the World Famous Buffet Offerings by Chef Kenneth and Heidi providing cocktails, beer, wine and more offered at Happy Hour Pricing.

Fireworks were popping (not really) but it turned out to be a GREAT time to meet new neighbors, share some stories and laughs.

We even had entertainment provided by Heidi by Lisa Hightower and occasionally Tommy Holloway would pop in for a song or two.

Let the smiles say the rest.

Covered StreetsCloud Covered Streets was founded in 2016 when Robert Thorn-ton was driving through the streets of Phoenix, and noticed the sad state of those people living on the street. He witnessed these people wearing dirty clothes that were usually tattered with many holes.

The image of people wearing torn and shredded clothing struck hard with Robert and since he happens to be in the fashion industry and owns a clothing company, he realized that he was in the position to provide clothing for those living on the streets of Maricopa County. With the resources available through his Paper Clouds Apparel company, Robert produced loads of shirts with his Paper Clouds logo on them and set out on the streets of Phoenix to help make a difference.

Robert was further touched through his experience while meet-ing and getting to know those he was giving his shirts to and determined that there was even more he could do to help. Robert had a better idea and wanted to provide all of them with a letter of hope. God only knows how long it has been since these people have experienced anything like that, a few essentials and a letter to express that they are cared about. This year for their Week of Service, Right Honda has partnered once again with Cloud Cov-ered Streets for their Helping the Homeless Project.

During the first week of June, Right Honda and Cloud Covered Streets delivered 100 backpacks filled with essentials such as snacks, hygiene items, flashlights, blankets, and water to the homeless within Maricopa County. Every backpack also contains a t-shirt (of course), and information about where they can get help. Last but not least, each backpack will have a handwritten note with a special message of hope and encouragement.

If you are looking for ways to make a difference, consider help and support for this amazing cause. Cloud Covered Streets is al-ways in need of more donations, sponsorships and volunteers to assist them with projects such as this to help the homeless in our state. Please get in touch with Robert at Cloud Covered Streets (www.cloudcoveredstreets.org) and ask what donations, spon-sorship or business partnerships can help make his philanthropic projects a great success.

Contact Jane D’Amelio, Director of Philanthropy at Right Honda to see how you can help the homeless community of Arizona. Sure, they have a whole range of amazing Honda models, but they can also use a few helping hands to make sure Robert’s Cloud Covered Streets project to help the homeless in our area is a big hit!

88 Days of Cruising, Scenery, Friendship and a GREAT Summer!

What does one do during the blazing days of summer in Arizona? Well, if you’re Randy and Carmel Tanner on Longfeather, they jump on their Ocean’s 11 boat (or ship, based upon your own description) in Seattle and invite neighbors and friends to meet at certain ports and share some of the more than 35 different and amazing ports and enjoy cruising into Alaska throughout the summer.

This year included a brief opportunity to share the boat and ports of call with Eagle Mountain neighbors Kim and Penny Kohlenberg.

Randy and Carmel, tell us about your boat and this won-derful cruise…Ocean’s 11 cruises at about 9 to 10 knots, so to travel 100 miles takes about 10 hours – and that would be a pretty long day (but remember as you get closer to Alaska, it doesn’t start getting dark in the summertime until about 10 pm.) Ket-chikan is 700 miles from Seattle, and we get about one mile per gallon. It makes the math real easy – 700 miles and we go through 700 gallons of diesel. We have a 1,200-gallon tank, so we’re able to go from Seattle to Ketchikan before we need more fuel.

Our entire trip – Seattle to Alaska and back – was a total of 2,570 miles. We don’t cruise during the night as you have to look for logs, so most of the time, we would anchor in a cove along the way – which is nice as there is no charge when you’re on anchor. If you come into a dock, moorage runs anywhere from $1/foot to $3.50/

foot in some of the more fancy places. We would anchor out but generally stay at a dock to meet our guests arriving by plane.

We would get our Dungeness crab using our own crab pots in anywhere from 40 to 60’ of water. We would get prawns using our own pots in anywhere from 150 to 300’ of water. We fished for salmon and halibut, but this year, there was very little salmon in southeast Alaska, so we had to settle for halibut.

I’m sure there were so many but, what were the high-lights of this trip? This year’s July Cruise started in Seattle, on to Roche Harbor, then to Nanaimo, Pender Harbor, Lund, Grace Harbor, Okeover Inlet with dinner at the Laughing Oyster and staying in Prideaux Haven overnight.

Several days later we moored in Heritage Harbor/Wrangell and met up with Kim and Penny in Wrangell traveled to Peters-burg. After this six-day excursion, Kim and Penny were excited, “Thanks for the Memories,” and we’re leaving.

After 88 days and almost 40 different Ports of Call, on September 1, we found our land legs and moored in Seattle for the winter…sweet home Arizona, here we come!

Randy, Carmel, Kim and Penny, the trip looked absolutely won-derful, beautiful and exciting…thank you for sharing.

Can’t wait to hear about 2019 and your adventures.

Want to feature your memorable vacations/weekend getaways? To share your experience, email me at [email protected] or call me at 480.226.5543 to be featured in the next “Travel Tales” Spotlight.

When the Fawvers returned from Chicago,They excitedly rushed to their door,

So glad to return, only to learn,That a snake had arrived just before.

Well!  The Welcome Wagon should blush,At their choice of a new representative,

Though it was benign, that snake was a sign,Of a group sorely needing a preventative!

Once inside, they found a large scorpion,Which never saw the shadow Bill threw,

One crushing blow, laid it quite low,What?  Oh, Bill’s size 13D shoe

Then, on the back porch was a rattler,Who’d evidently gotten the take,

That a party was about, and he’d been left out,Rural-Metro found a mighty mad snake!

Two bobcat sightings came next,With Bill and Alice’s eyes growing wide,Then all was fine, until the worst time,

For Alice, who had no place to hide.

For as the movers were bringing,All the stuff in from the truck,

A feathered guest, probably looking to nest,Saw the open door, oh boy, what luck!

Oh, the terrible flapping and screeching,That went on as the two met,

The bird was OK, ’twas Alice they say,Who was carrying on, all upset.

Out of the house ran Alice,Waving, yelling, to Heaven above,

Why you would have thought a pterodactyl been caught,Instead of one petrified dove.

All is calm now at the Fawver’s,The dove’s gone, and Alice survived,

Let’s not blow her cool but around their pool,Ducks are lounging, Summer’s arrived!

Resident Kim Kohlenberg is asking if you would like to support an effort to change the current CC&Rs pertaining to short-term rental of homes within Eagle Mountain.

We would propose a minimum of 30-day rentals. This would limit the daily and weekly “visitors” we have accessing the gates and gate codes in our community.

If you are interested in joining this group in this effort, please contact:

Pets Now Benefit...Minimally Invasive Surgery TechniquesWritten by…Dr. Brad Rosonke, DVM, Resident Sponsor and Pet Care Contributor (480) 391-7297

If you have had a medical procedure performed using minimally invasive techniques, you are aware of the benefits: Less time under anes-thesia, less pain, less time in the hospital, and quicker recovery. The same benefits apply to animals and veterinarians have developed new avenues and approaches for minimally invasive surgery and diagnostics.

Laparoscopic techniques are the new standard of care for many surgeries including:Laparoscopic spaysBladder stone removalBiopsies of the liver, kidneys, bladder, intestines, adrenal

glands and spleenForeign body removal (when animals eat something

they shouldn’t)Gastropexy (a surgery used to permanently suture the stomach to

the body wall, thereby preventing “bloat,” a deadly disease)

Laparoscopic procedures are safer for your pet.  When using these techniques, your veterinarian can visualize your pet’s organs, blood vessels, and any diseased tissue under magnification on a large computer monitor. Using traditional techniques, it is often difficult to see the full picture of what is happening during surgery as the veterinarian is trying to look down through an elongated incision that often has organs and other structures in the way. Intraoperative bleeding can be diffi-cult to notice during traditional surgery, while minimally invasive techniques not only minimize bleeding, they allow the surgeon to visualize the whole abdomen easily to look for any bleeding before closing the abdomen.

Minimally invasive techniques vastly improve pain and recovery time compared to traditional surgeries.Minimally invasive techniques vastly improve the pain your an-imal feels as well as the time it takes for your animal to recover from surgery. The American Veterinary Medical Association performed a study to find laparoscopic spays can decrease pain response in animals up to 65% compared to traditional tech-niques. Imagine going back into the near past when people had their gallbladder removed by opening the whole abdomen using a 6–12” incision, then taking days in the hospital to recover. Now fast forward to today when the gallbladder is considered quick outpatient surgery, going home the same day.

our member of the family

Loving Eagle Mountain

Content and Photos Provided by Our Neighbors Molly and Ron Mautz

First, Cookie, introduce us to your human family members. Ron and Molly Mautz are relatively new residents of Eagle Mountain. They were both educators before re-tirement. Molly, French and Spanish middle school and high school. Ron, elementary PE and varsity basketball and baseball head coach. Ron retired in 2002 and Molly retired in 2015.

Molly, where and why did you get your pet? GRIN out of Cleveland, Ohio. Golden Retrievers In Need. A rescue orga-nization. She was found running with her mother on a deserted country road. She was covered in feces, para-sites and had a heart murmur. Prob-ably thrown out by a nearby puppy mill breeder, because she had heart issues and her mother had probably had multiple litters and the breeder could no longer use them. Tragic. A kind lady found them and called the

Marmalade, that’s FUNNY.

sheriff. He took her to a local shelter, who in turn called GRIN and they picked her up.

What special talents or unique quirks does Cookie have? She literally will creep up on your lap until she is fully sitting on you.

Cookie, what’s your funniest story? When Mom and Dad applied for the adoption of me there were eight other applicants for me. A few days later the adoption placement person called and said, after much deliberation, I was going to the elderly couple. Mom said: “OK. Thank you. Could you put us up for the next dog?” And he said: “No. YOU are the elderly couple!” So Mom and Dad ask me every day if I’m happy I came to live with the “elderly” couple!

Cookie, would you consider yourself spoiled?ABSOLUTELY, yes! In every way! And I LOVE it!

Ron and Molly, how has Cookie enriched your family’s lives? She’s a gentle soul who came from horrific treatment. From a cowering, submissive, frightened animal to a smiling, loving, trusting baby girl providing complete, unwavering love every day.

Cookie, GREAT meeting you and we look forward to seeing you walking around the neighborhood with some of your friends.
