Neighborhood: Mountain Island Lake This low-density region 20 minutes north of the city center—known for outdoor activities and its eponymous lake—is rated one of the most family-friendly neighborhoods in the state by real estate data firm NeighborhoodScout. Convenient to the soon-to-be-completed I-485 beltway, Mountain Island Lake features pretty, spacious homes.

Housing associations within the area, such as Riverbend, provide community pools and parks, and the nearby 1,350-acre Latta Plantation Nature Preserve offers 16 miles of horse and hiking trails.

For those who want “more home” for a lower price, says local Realtor Francine Dupont, Mountain Island Lake is a thrifty alternative to Ballantyne, a southern Charlotte neighborhood often touted as the city’s most family-oriented. Home prices in the Mountain Island Lake area start around $150,000.

A Rich History

Mountain Island and the surrounding area holds many places of significance in Charlotte’s rich history. Named for a small island on the southwestern end of the lake, Mountain Island was home to the first cotton mill in Gaston county, built in 1848 by Thomas R. Tate and Henry Humphreys. The mill accommodated a small village of brick houses until the mill and village were destroyed by flooding from a hurricane in 1916. In 1923, only seven years after the flood, the lake was dammed to coincide with the building of Mountain Island Hydroelectric Station, commissioned by Duke Energy, and is still in operation today. [1]

The scenic views of Mountain Island are home to several notable parks and reserves, including Latta Plantation, and Hornet’s Nest Park. Latta Plantation borders the southeast side of Mountain Island Lake, and protects over 1,343-acres of land and historic 18th and 19th century homes and artifacts. The preserve was established in 1981, and today features a conservatory and rehabilitation center for birds of prey, the Carolina Raptor Center.[2][3][4] Hornet’s Nest Park is located along Beatties Ford Road inside I-485, and takes Charlotte’s famous nickname, given by Lord Cornwallis, who deemed the city “a hornet’s nest of rebellion” in the revolutionary war in 1780. The 102-acre park offers walking trails, tennis, athletic fields, basketball, a playground, lake, picnic shelters, 18 hole disc golf course, and a BMX track.[5][6]

Finally, the Mountain Island area is home to many historical landmarks including St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Hopewell Presbyterian Church, Belmont Abbey, Rozzell House, and many more.[7]
