Luck Be a LadyThe idea of luck has spurred a fl urry of discussion and debate throughout the years. For Van Cleef & Arpels, it is a symbol of inspiration. Three entrepreneurial and charming women share how they interpret luck and how it has shaped their lives.
There are many schools of thought that are prevalent among mankind
when you touch on the subject of luck. For some, the idea of luck
is something that is out of your hands—something that is fated and
destined for you, written in the stars or willed by God. For some, there is the idea
that you do have some sort of control over your fate, through wielding charms or
superstitious artefacts that have brought you blessings in life. For others, luck
is merely the combination of hard work and opportunity, for to be successful,
one cannot exist without the other. But for luxury maison Van Cleef & Arpels,
luck serves as an inspiration for its creations and has become the raison d’etre of
its existence. “To be lucky, you must believe in luck,” as often-cited by Jacques
Arpels, who is the nephew of Estelle Arpels who married Alfred Van Cleef.
Certainly for over 100 years, the maison has kept believing—using luck as a
poetic licence for beauty. Tribute has been paid to luck through the imagination
and skills of Van Cleef & Arpels’ coterie of artisans and craftsmen in the most
beautiful way imaginable through gemstones and motifs such as ladybirds, four-
leaf clovers, unicorns and more. In this feature, watches and jewellery enhance
the beautiful stories of these three inspiring ladies who share their own take on

Fast and furious, Erwin Azizi zooms to the studio in his blazing red Ferrari F430 Scuderia. He’s obviously a man who lives in the fast lane and demands for superior performance from his car as well as his clothes. Erwin has been a fan of Ermenegildo Zegna since his college days in the UK and admits he has some shirts and trousers as well as a few pairs of shoes from Zegna in his wardrobe. “I save my smart outfits for when I have meetings or when I see my shareholders,” Erwin tells Malaysia Tatler, adding that when he goes on site inspections, it is an open-neck shirt, jeans and boots, which he confesses to being a big fan of. “My favourite boot brand is Red Wing,” he says. He describes his own style as smart casual and says he’s happiest in a shirt, jeans and loafers. An item of clothing which Erwin particularly holds dear to his heart, and which represents a rite of passage of sorts is a flannel shirt he bought when he was 13 years old and studying in Singapore. “It’s the first shirt I bought on my own and with my own money,” he says proudly. “Up till that point, my clothes were chosen for me and this shirt, which I still own and wear today, represents the beginning of my independence, as I chose it for myself.”
