Menthol is a substance that occurs naturally in mint plants. Medicinal menthol is either manmade or made from the extracts of mint oil. Menthol provides a cooling sensation when applied to the skin or other tissues. When applied directly to the skin, it acts to chemically trigger the cold-sensitive TRPM-8 receptors which are activated at temperatures between 8° - 28°. As the neurons are caused to fire at temperatures above normal activation this triggers the well-known cooling sensation. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic drug that works by blocking nerve signals in the body. When used topically, it reduces pain or discomfort caused by skin irritations. Lidocaine provides relief from burning, itching, and other symptoms of skin inflammations. Besides its use as a local anesthetic, it is also used for minor surgeries and surface anesthesia.
