New things...

Access to UCS and UEA databases Over the next few weeks the library will gradually be moving away from Wolsey. We will no longer maintain our Library pages on Wolsey and instead will be devel-oping subject pages for each curriculum area as well as enhancing our pages on the UCS website. This will effect the way that databases and electronic resources such as e-books are accessed. Instead of going to the e-resources page on Wolsey staff and students will need to go the library catalogue and search for the relevant database. A link to a list of databases is available on the first screen of the catalogue

How do I know which databases to use for my subject?

Until the subject pages are up and running you will need to use the printed help

sheets, these are available in the library or on the UCS website.

Click on Student Life

Then select Library Services

Information for each subject can be

found under E Resources

Remember: All of the Databases offer alerting services via email so that you can

stay aware of new content (or even set up your own start page on Google to bring

everything together)

Access to JSTOR is based on subscriptions to sets of journal col-

available to include Film, Art History (190 titles), Architectural

History (31 titles) Philosophy and Religion. The additional access

will also benefit English (265 titles) and History (316 titles)

Newsbank

A new resource providing full-text access to UK regional and na-

tional newspapers

Project Muse and Oxford Art

To enable staff access we have taken out our own subscriptions to

Project Muse and Oxford Art online (these were previously provid-

ed by UEA)

Web of Knowledge

Citations database covering a wide subject area. This resource is

useful for tracking citations.

Art full-text (Wilsonweb)

Art full-text is now available via the Ebsco platform, this means

that it can be cross-searched with Academic Search Elite.

Database News

The More Books Campaign is running until the end of the academic year. We know that the most frequent complaint about the library from students is that there aren’t enough books. We are asking students to suggest books for stock, these can be more copies of text-books, wider reading, material to support dissertations, anything else that they would like us to have. A web site has been set up for students to use to re-quest books, http://ucsmorebooks.wordpress.com/ So far students from Photography, English and Com-puter Games have requested items—please encourage your students to make use of the scheme. I will post a reminder about the campaign in the course areas after the Easter break.

New e-book collections Safari Safari e-books allows us to select a set number of titles from their collection, the company is good for technical books on computing and photography. The titles can be changed at any time, so we don’t have to keep the same books they can be swapped around. The complete collection from which we can select can be seen here: http://proquest.safaribooksonline.com/ The e-books are made available through the library catalogue. Please note that we share this resource with business and management so we can have a total of 25 books at any one time. Ebrary Ebrary works slightly differently to our other e-book providers. Over 700 e-book records have been uploaded into the library catalogue, when you or a student find a title that you want to look at simply select the url link in the catalogue record and the book will open. If the book is used for more than 10 minutes or 10 pages are turned the book is au-tomatically purchased.

Coming soon...

We will be developing a library subject page for each

course area, these will be linked to via the Intranet

and UCS website and replace our current content on

Wolsey. Each page will include information about re-

sources held in the library (journals e-resources,

books etc), links to reading lists, where to get help,

information/feeds from useful websites and anything

else that you would like to see.

If there are resources that you would like included in

these page then let me know, as I am in the process

of gathering together information at the moment.

Reading lists and handbooks

We are gradually adding your module reading lists to the library catalogue, to see

them look for the link to reading lists on the home page of the catalogue.

Students can see what is available and what is on loan from their module reading

list.

We are also generating QR codes to go with these lists, I will liaise with the course

administrators to get these put into the handbooks when they are compiled over

the summer. But if you would like the codes beforehand then I can supply them.

I hope that we can get some useful borrowing statistics against reading lists, some

staff have said that this would be helpful for planning lists, seeing what has been

borrowed.
