A former resident of Tacoma, Washington, Amy comes to us from the King County Library System in Wash- ington State. Among other things, Amy will be responsible for staff scheduling; as well as helping Jeff Wavrunek, the District Librarian, with the day-to-day running of the library. These duties require someone that can be adapta- ble, which Amy has proven she is ca- pable of by being a volunteer for Multnomah County Library. But wait, didn’t you just read that she comes from Tacoma? How can she be a volunteer for Multnomah County Library? Yes indeed; and perhaps we should also mention how resourceful she is. Amy has been a volunteer for Answerland, serving library patrons from across Or- egon. Answerland (also known as Chat with a librarian), is an online service that uses librarians from across the state and around the world to provide 24-hour ref- erence service for all Oregonians. Movies @The Library

What a great way to spend a cold Saturday afternoon, watching a free movie at

the library! The Dalles-Wasco County Public Library will be showing two movies

during the month of January.

Dolphin Tale 2 at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 3rd:

Warner Bros. Pictures and Alcon Entertainment’s Dolphin Tale 2 continues the story

of the brave dolphin Winter, whose miraculous rescue and rehabilitation—thanks to

the invention of a groundbreaking prosthetic tail—made her a symbol of persever-

ance to people around the world and inspired the 2011 family hit movie Dolphin

Tale.

The BoxTrolls at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 24th:

A family event movie from the creators of “Coraline” and “ParaNorman” that intro-

duces audiences to a new breed of family – The Boxtrolls, a community of quirky,

mischievous creatures who have lovingly raised an orphaned human boy named

Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead Wright) in the amazing cavernous home they’ve

built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge. When the town’s villain, Archibald

Snatcher (Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley), comes up with a plot to get rid of

the Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground, “into the light,” where he

meets and teams up with fabulously feisty Winnie (Elle Fanning). Together, they

devise a daring plan to save Eggs’ family .

Dufur School/Community Library A knitting group meets in the library in Dufur, and anyone is invited to join

them. The Dufur Knitting Club meets on Thursday nights, from 6:00 until 8:00.

Dufur School/Community Library will be closed on Monday, January 19th and

Monday, January 26th.

Story times Toddler Time, for birth to 3 years old, is held every

Wednesday morning at 10:30 in the meeting room at The

Dalles-Wasco County Public Library. This 20 minute pro-

gram is full of songs, fingerplays and

lapsits, and a book or two. There is

plenty of time afterwards for the kids to

play and the adults to visit.

On Friday mornings at 10:30 you can

join us at The Dalles or in Maupin for

Pre-school Story Time. This fun pro-

gram, full of songs and stories, and sometimes a craft or

two, is perfect for the 3 to 6-year-olds, though all ages are

welcome.

Game Days Teens (ages 12-18) can join us at

The Dalles-Wasco County Public

Library for Game Days on Mondays,

January 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th

from 3:00 —5:00 p.m. in the library’s

meeting room. Board games, PS2

and the Wii are available for the teens.

Game Day for younger school age kids (ages 7-12) will

be from 10:00 a.m. — 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 3rd;

and 10:00 a.m. — 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 17th .

Board games are always available to play with in the

library.

We meet at 6:30 p.m. the third

Thursday of the month up-

stairs in the magazine cor-

ner. Each month there is a

new book to read and dis-

cuss, while enjoying light

refreshments and great com-

panionship.

The book we are reading

for the January 15th discus-

sion is The language of flow-

ers, by Vanessa Diffenbaugh.

A mesmerizing, moving,

and elegantly written debut novel, The

Language of Flowers beautifully weaves

past and present, creating a vivid por-

trait of an unforgettable woman whose

gift for flowers helps her change the

lives of others even as she struggles to

overcome her own troubled past.

The Victorian language of flowers

was used to convey roman-

tic expressions: honeysuckle

for devotion, asters for pa-

tience, and red roses for

love. But for Victoria Jones,

it’s been more useful in

communicating grief, mis-

trust, and solitude. After a

childhood spent in the foster

-care system, she is unable

to get close to anybody, and

her only connection to the

world is through flowers and their

meanings.

Now eighteen and emancipated

from the system, Victoria has nowhere

to go and sleeps in a public park,

where she plants a small garden of her

own. Soon a local florist discovers her

talents, and Victoria realizes she has a

gift for helping others through the

flowers she chooses for them. But a

mysterious vendor at the flower mar-

ket has her questioning what’s been

missing in her life, and when she’s

forced to confront a painful secret from

her past, she must decide whether it’s

worth risking everything for a second

chance at happiness.

For those of you that need to plan a

little further in advance, the planned

book for February will be Worthy

Brown’s daughter, by Phillip Margolin.

Copies of these books (as well as

audio recordings) are widely available

in the Sage Library System. All readers

are welcome (and for those of you

wondering, NO, you do not have to

have a library card in order to join us),

even if you haven’t finished the book.

“Third Thursday” book group at The Dalles

Southern Wasco County Library The Southern Wasco

County Public Library

welcomes all two

through five year olds to

attend Story Time every

Friday from 10:30am to

11:00am. Each week we

explore a different

theme. There will be stories, sharing, music, crafts and

more! Activities will be geared for the two through

five age range but all ages are welcome. See you

there!

Located on the main street, the Maupin Library of-

fers internet access and a nice selection of reading ma-

terial.

If you have ever been inside the library in Maupin,

you know how crowded they are. Fundraising is un-

derway to provide a new building for the library (and

new area for City Hall as well). If you would like to

help in any way, please contact the Maupin library at

(541)395-2208.

Join the Friends of the Library

This letter was sent out recently to members of the Friends group. If you are not currently a member, now is the per-

fect time to join. Ask for an application form the next time you come to the library. There are some perks to being a

member of the Friends, such as personal invitations to any programs sponsored by the Friends. Or, my favorite, early

entrance into the book sales.
