WORKING IN THE LIBRARY
Mrs. Higgins, Mrs. Clapp, and Mrs. Santizo are the three people who supervise the
staff who shelve library materials and work at the check out desk. Adult pages work
part time during the day and high school pages work afternoons, evenings and
weekend year round. High school pages are generally hired in May, train during the
summer and work all year round. The work schedule is a combination of:
· Weekday afternoons (3-6pm) or evenings (6-9pm)
· Weekend shifts are Saturdays (9am-1pm or 1-5) and/or Sundays (1-4pm)
· Summer weekday shifts are either 9am-2pm, 2pm-6pm or 6-9pm
High school pages must be at least 15 and entering their sophomore or junior year
when applying, and are expected to work for two years during their junior and
senior years. Applications should be submitted by May 1 and are available in the
library and on the library’s website at www.fairportlibrary.org/about/employment.
Registration is required for these programs. Please call the library at 585.223.9091

In the late 1800s, State Library Director Melvil Dewey (of Dewey Decimal fame)
“…persuaded the Regents to begin building a statewide system of free library services; he
declared that libraries are ‘the university of the people.’ During the 1890s nearly five
hundred free circulating libraries were chartered” (Folts, J. D., History of the University of
the State of New York and the State Education Department 1784 - 1996.
http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/edocs/education/sedhist.htm).
During that booming decade of new free libraries, the Fairport Public Library was one of
those “nearly five hundred” public libraries. On November 21, 1895, the Fairport Public
Library was incorporated and chartered by the University of New York to represent School
District #9 in the Village. We were, according to research done by the Monroe County Li-
brary System, the first public library in our County. The library started in “a room in the
Hawkins block,” and moved to “commodious and well lighted” room in the Bown block.
The library and community’s growth caused the library to relocate three more times: first,
in 1917, to a wood frame building at 18 Perrin St; second, at the same address but in a
new, WPA building (current home of the Perinton Historical Society and their museum);
third, to our current home, the Village Landing, during Urban Renewal. On January 25,
1952, the library amended their charter to serve the new Fairport Central School District
after all of the school districts of Perinton centralized or consolidated into one district. As
of 2016, there are 755 libraries across New York State, and they saw 103,171,804 visitors
who borrowed 131,364,355 items! Here at Fairport, in 2018, we loaned out 633,731
items, both physical and digital—more than any other library in Monroe County!
Check the online calendar for a complete listing of Job Seeker Workshops Job programs are presented by RochesterWorks! and Dr. Rita Carey.
Meet Abby DeVuyst, our new Adult Services and Programming
Librarian. Abby joined the staff in October after serving for five
years as the Adult Services Librarian at the Brockport Seymour
Library. She has brought with her a passion for programming,
and a desire to bring new and creative opportunities to the
Fairport community. In addition to scheduling adult programs,
and assisting with the Afternoon and Evening Fiction Groups,
Abby will be purchasing books for the non-fiction collection.
She will focus on sports, entertainment, and history. An avid crafter, Abby will also be
starting an Adult DIY Craft Club in January that will meet the second Thursday of every
month from 6-7:30pm. When Abby isn’t at the library you can find her doing comedy and
theater in Rochester. In addition to doing several stage productions a year, she works
year round as part of the Blackfriars Theater Comedy Series with her improv troupe
Unleashed! You can also find her at the Rochester Fringe Festival performing as a part of
the comedy duo Bushwhacked.
