Ebooks: Knovel

• Ebooks on the catalogue, use to link to full-text

• Knovel is a large collection of ebooks for engineering

Databases

• Library catalogue tells you what journals we have• To search journal articles, technical reports,

newspapers etc. you’ll need to use library databases

• Enable subject searching across several journals• Unlike internet search engines these only include

reliable academic publications• You can collect results and easily email them to

yourself or save or print them

Key Databases

• Compendex: Interdisciplinary index of engineering and applied science publications.

• Iconda: database for construction, architecture and civil engineering.

• Construction & Building Abstracts: index of publications in construction, planning, materials and civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering etc.

• Try metalib to search all 3• Use to locate articles in electronic or print formats

Search strategy

• Break down into key concepts:

Example search: Pollution in the River Nile and its effect on drinking water in Egypt

• Pollution• Nile• Drinking water

• Link the concepts using command words:– pollution AND “drinking water” AND Nile

• Remember synonyms and related terms:– pollution OR “water quality”

• Truncation/wildcards - *, $, ?– e.g. engin* = engineer , engineered , engineering

• Phrase searching– e.g. “bridge engineering”

• Grouping using brackets – e.g. (bridge* OR tunnel*) AND London

Research project demonstration: Waterloo Bridge, London

• Background research for key facts– Encyclopaedias or other reference material

• Evaluate resources : general architecture & construction databases will be best for this search

• Start research:– eUCLid– Bibliographic databases: Metalib

Databases Exercise

1. Using Metalib Quick Search, search the Built Environment subset to find 2 articles on the topic “Bridge construction projects in London”

2. Use to locate the articles (either electronically or in print)

3. Email yourself the records for the two articles

4. Try the same search in the Engineering subset

5. Which set found more useful results?

6. If time, set up My Metalib with selected databases
