An informative biography of the famous aircraft designer. Chief Designer for the Hawker company from 1925, Camm’s early designs included his famous series of military biplanes which included the Hart, Hind and Fury, before, in 1933, he proposed designing a low-wing monoplane fighter which culminated in the Hurricane. After initial problems, his later wartime designs – Typhoon and Tempest – were adapted into effective ground attack aircraft and fighters. Post-WW2 Camm turned to jet aircraft, first with the Sea Hawk then the swept-wing Hunter, his supersonic successor to the Hunter – the P1121 – being partially built before being cancelled by the British government. In the 1960s Camm became interested in the possibilities of vertical take- off and, with Stanley Hooker of Bristol Siddeley, conceived the design that led to the Harrier, a world leader in V/STOL aircraft design. Eyes Turned Skyward50 Years of the Ulster Aviation Society

Stephen HegartyStephen Riley

It was suggested we could do better on our own. A typewriter was purchased, a decrepit old rotary printer that worked on stencils was acquired and we were in business. A ragtag group of aircraft spotters now had the title Ulster Aviation Society and boy, were we proud of ourselves!

– Eddie Franklin, founder of the Ulster Aviation Society.
