Bonnie Ross, branch manager — Monica Brock — Kelley Davis We have started an after school Tuesdays for

elementary aged children during this school year. It’s about an hour and a half long. We read a picture book and then do related activities. There’s plenty of activities for children to be involved in—so far we’ve done chalk art on the parking lot, bubbles, balloons, chain reaction activities, egg drop competition and a human caterpillar. And of course, we serve snacks at the end. We’ve been averaging ten kids per session.

Johnson County Library Foundation The foundation was created in 1976 by patrons who saw the need to ensure the future of the library. Through donations, memorials, and fund-raising, these volunteers have successfully supported special needs of the library & established a permanent endowment.

Did You Know? Many enjoy reading the

series produced by their favorite authors. Sometimes that can be an intimidating process, when authors like Craig Johnson have more a dozen novels. Well, we try to keep things simple for you! We’ve been updating our collection so that series are numbered. Look on the spine label where the call number is and you’ll see the series number. Often we add initials to tell you the name of the series. So, the latest and fourth novel by Julie McElwain is “M 15 #4.” Keep an eye out for the next one in your series!

M 14 #4

Researching our local history is what I do. Finding the answer to such a request is pure job satisfaction. Thus, I began my investigation and in the famous local writings known as The Charles Burritt Letters (Buffalo lawyer 1877-1898), I stumbled upon this description of a gun. “Mark you well what the movements of these men have been this last week…On Wednesday morning the Post barracks were burned-off which more hereafter; on Thursday [Henry] Smith was considerably intoxicated but would not talk; on Friday Smith had passed the Rubicon and proceeded to distinguish himself; his first break was to go into Munkres & Mather’s store; he came in with his hand on his six-shooter which he had in his pants and right in front of him; he asked Munkres to look at a pistol that was displayed in the store; the pistol was a pearl handle and ornamented and was priced at $27.50; Munkres saw that Smith was drunk and desiring to avoid trouble allowed him to examine the pistol; as he turned to lay it on the showcase for Smith to examine it he discovered that Smith had drawn his own pistol and was holding it in

front of his breast resting his finger on the hammer; Smith picked up the gun and asked Munkres what it was worth; Munkres not wishing to be put in the position of refusing him credit, said to Smith the gun was not for sale…Munkres told him it was already sold; Smith insisted upon knowing who to; Munkres told him to Johns; Smith inquired if it was C.P. Johns and upon receiving an affirmative reply…”

Smith continued to say that he would make Johns give it to him and walked out of the store with both guns in his hand and the story gets even more exciting out on the street. Someone did eventually disarm Smith after a little shoot out action straight from the real wild west.

We can assume the gun went back to be displayed at Munkres and Mather’s Store. So, who ordered the Colt Six-Shooter? Who actually purchased it? Still, we have no answer to those questions. The library has archived legers from the store, but they begin after the cattle war. So close to solving the mystery, but no case closed status yet. (Write down your life’s experiences – it is history!)

off a bounty of gift certificates to local grocers and restaurants—a dine in or dine out package, if you will! Raffle tickets are $5 for one and $20 for five and benefit the Friends organization.

The event is sponsored by the Johnson County Library Foundation and Friends of the Library.

Attention Book Club Members!!!!! Did you know that we have started putting together book club “kits” of 8-10 books for you to check out? Plus, we have a list of hundreds of titles for “kits” that we can interlibrary loan from libraries in the state of Wyoming, including many from Kaycee (that would save us shipping cost). We encourage you to order a “kit” for your next meeting simply because it is easier to request one “kit” with ten books than request ten separate books from ten separate libraries for ten separate book clubs - then processing in and out all of those books and shipping them back. Whew!

The first two kits we have are Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens and Educated by Tara Westover. The Friends of the Library donated these copies of Where the Crawdads Sing, and a local book club donated Educated. Thanks to both for supporting us! A couple other kits we’ll have soon are The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown and Big Horn Mountain Odyssey by Herb Eder (the latter was donated by former librarian Patty Myers.)

Please do let us have two weeks before your meeting to get the books in for you and let us know when your return date will be after your discussion. Thanks so much!
