Communities of Practice
• Cross organizational groups of experts collaborating on a single point of focus i.e. laser communications
• Part of the “Anywhere to Anywhere” toolkit
• A forum for knowledge collaboration without the boundaries of home organization, location, or time zone
• Objective is to “speak with a single voice” in response to customer inquiries on topics of our expertise
• 19 Communities of Practice at Aerospace – Complex Systems, Specs & Stds, Mission Assurance, Space Policy
• Key to the preservation of corporate knowledge

CoP Leadership Roles
• Facilitator– Manages community group interaction– Maintains records of community meetings– Mediates issues in support of community charter
• Knowledge Manager– Coordinate with Community of Practice Leader & Facilitator– Monitor community membership– Schedule meetings– Assist Topic Groups within communities– Function as CoP Knowledge Steward– Manage/create folders/monitor permissions– Manage workspace (folders,blogs,wikis)– Manage/monitor content – Interface with KM Office

Knowledge Steward Community of Practice
• Responsible for the institutionalization of proper management of information…in support of sharing of intellectual capital
• Leads the training, sustaining and fostering of collaboration within a network of Knowledge Stewards within Aerospace.
• Responsible for consultative support to all areas of Aerospace in the proper management of folder structure, group taxonomy and administration, and the use of permissions to ensure consistency and integrity of information within the AeroLink document management system.

• Provide expertise for consistent management of knowledge
• Conduct knowledge audits for organizations
• Recommend best practices and operational guidelines
• Set permissions on folders and audit for accuracy
• Demonstrate AeroLink to end users
• Assist with development of end user training and training materials
• Coordinate end user training for organization, including 1-on-1 sessions for management and others
• Provide primary support for organization’s end users, including required downloads, data migration, new applications
• Collaborate with other Knowledge Stewards
