I’m a first generation Mexican American—the daughter of two immigrants who worked hard and sacrificed everything to give my siblings and me a better future than they ever imagined for themselves. I love recognizing my Latina roots and heritage, my culture and language, but also the duality of what that means. I am an American as well and proud. I'm proud of what my people have contributed to this great nation that has given us the opportunity to accomplish our dreams. In this current political climate, it is very hard to read and hear what some people negatively attribute to Latino and Hispanic culture. It only makes it that much harder to combat stereotypes and racism. In spite of this, I have hope that we will overcome this backward way of thinking and remember that America was founded and built from the ground up by immigrants. Many cultures from around the world have come to call this country home and have left their mark, shaping the diverse and rich nation that we love. To me, Hispanic Heritage Month is a way to recognize what we've brought to this nation and what it continually gives to me.
