As you get used to being back on a routine and everythingseems extra chaotic, a simple way to help yourself be organized is to keep all of yoursupplies in one place. This will keep you from wasting time searching for the supplies youneed for a specific assignment. Having a time and place with supplies and a study time everyday will get you into a positive and productive study routine.

Cross Country NewsLast weekend these 12 participated in the Ragnar 2017. It's a 190 mile + continuous relayover 24 hours from Frisco to Aspen. It's very challenging requiring among other things-training, commitment, fortitude and team work. Some teams didn't even finish.

On average each member ran ~20 miles or so, give or take. Most had night legs where itwas just them, their headlamp and the Colorado sky.

These guys battled thru some unexpected challenges finishing 7th out of 187 teams, placingfirst in the high school division, with a time of 26 hours 37 mins.

' I'm most proud of the positive comments we got from many who interacted with them, including a team from Miami who had runners as far away as Venezuela who they ran neckand neck with throughout the night. Classical Manners for the Modern Youth

From the 1934 high-schooltextbook "Good Manners" used in"Household Science" class of thatday:

“Rule No. 21. The Cup. In drinking abeverage, it is wise to try a spoonful firstto find out if it is too hot. After this first test, drink the beverage from the cup. Neverpour your coffee, tea, or a cocoa into thesaucer to cool. Never drink with the spoonin the cup. Do not sip the beverage from

the spoon with a sucking noise. Do not stir your beverage around and around withyour spoon. Danger signal: never leave your spoon sticking up in your cup. Beforedrinking from a glass, wipe your lips with your napkin. This prevents an unsightlyrim on the glass. Grasp a goblet firmly by the stem. Take hold of a glass near thebottom. Drink slowly and quietly.”

Mr. Schaffer,

Although I am sad to leave Liberty, I am eternally grateful for my time spent there. I will miss itdearly and hope it continues to thrive as such an amazing place of education. I would like to share with you an essay I wrote (for an application I submitted). If you feel itappropriate, you may share it with the teachers who brought me to where I am. Prompt: What academic interest makes you come alive and how have you pursued it up tothis point? I love learning. I love learning about life. I love learning about all aspects of life. As such, Icannot choose just one academic interest and explain how it makes me come alive, becausethey all do! So therefore, I am going to talk about the importance of a Classical Liberal ArtsEducation.

What makes an education “Classical”? Many things go into classifying an education“Classical”, but the most important, arguably, is that the education is not about theKnowledge but about the Wisdom. (Yes, the Knowledge is vital to the Wisdom.) Instead of thefocus for school being on how much one can memorize and how many maths problemscan be completed in a set amount of time, the focus is on how to be virtuous, how to bewise. It is taking the “regular” education and adding a deeper level of meaning. It is learningwhat Galileo discovered; and then adding the why he discovered it, how he discovered it,what it means for us, what it meant for him, and where it can take us. Not only that, but it isthinking about how Galileo’s discovery can make a man virtuous. I am very lucky to have had the opportunity to attend an academically challenging, college-preparatory, classical liberal arts educational high school. In each of my classrooms therewere posters hanging on the walls with the definitions of Patriotism, Justice, Gratitude,Temperance, Prudence, Fortitude, and most importantly Wisdom. Each month we had anassembly with a guest speaker coming to speak on each one of these virtues. While wewere working incredibly hard at learning the knowledge, we were (many unknowingly)learning how to live. Our teachers taught not just the material, but also the meaning. Theywere not just distant statues who happened to know a lot about U.S. History; they werementors who firstly taught us about “the good life” and secondly about U.S. History. Withoutthis wonderful education, I would be lost and have no idea how to go about living in thisgreat world.

So, what academic interest makes me come alive? They all do! I would stay throughout lunchin my English teacher’s room discussing the motive behind why Daisy and Gatsby droveaway after killing a woman. I would make my peers upset in asking too many questionsduring Physics about Neutrinos: how they were discovered, what they do, how they interactwith human bodies. I would spend countless hours poring over my art projects; using everyfree period to talk with my teachers and critique my work. I would watch YouTube video afterYouTube video on the “Crash Courses in U.S. History”, only to be left needing to ask myteacher for movie recommendations that do a good job representing an event or time periodin history. I created a book club in which we read Fitzgerald, Hemingway, FlanneryO’Connor, Steinbeck, among others. I spent every Saturday morning at school with a

Page 12: Liberty Common High School Monday Noteshs.libertycommon.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_127666/File... · Creative Writing Club: Wednesdays, 9th Hour, Dickinson's Attic (Mrs. Renstrom's

chemistry study group not so I could get better grades, but because I enjoyed learning aboutthe Beauty of God in the material world. I went to tutors for help in math; refusing to stopuntil I understood how Logarithms work. I helped my classmates program their robotsbecause they could not, and I needed more practice in Engineering. I became friends with aChilean girl only speaking in Spanish with her (she knows some English, but I want to getbetter at Spanish so I told her she can only speak to me in Spanish). All in all, I lookedforward to each and every one of my classes every day. Yes, I would get upset with theendless homework and the problems that don’t make sense. But in the end, I would leaveeach class period in awe at the beautiful world in which I live.

With a busy extracurricular schedule and the massive amounts of homework assigned, I didnot have as much time as I would have liked in order to pursue learning more. But in the timeI did have, I always spent it learning. Learning how to live. Learning how to love. And mostimportant of all, learning who God is.

Thank you! In Christ,Olivia Wagner

Page 13: Liberty Common High School Monday Noteshs.libertycommon.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_127666/File... · Creative Writing Club: Wednesdays, 9th Hour, Dickinson's Attic (Mrs. Renstrom's

please keep the following in mind.1. Pull all the way forward in the drop-off lane,2. Students should be ready to exit their vehicles when the car is stopped. (this is not

time to sit and talk about what is for dinner or finish homework),3. All students should exit the vehicle on the curb side,4. If there is a parent that has to get out of the car to help a student with items in the

vehicle, this is not that lane. The student parking lot would be a better location to drop-off,

5. No U-Turns,6. No jaywalking. (Drivers, don’t promote jaywalking by picking up or dropping off

passengers from the curbside opposite the LCHS property).7. Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

These and other traffic laws are too-frequently ignored during pickup and drop-offs. For thesafety of our students, please adhere to local traffic laws and to our pickup and drop-offguidance. Please CLICK HERE to view it.

If time is required for anything longer than to just drop-off a student, consider droppingstudents off in the student parking lot (northeast corner of the school). Particularly if there isa bike, musical instrument or large student project that is being unloaded. This locationwould also be good for beginning drivers with permits that need to change places with theirparent after they get dropped off.

9th-Hour Clubs/Extra Help. At the end of every day, there is a 30-minute period from 2:45to 3:15 PM dedicated for students to receive extra help from teachers and/or to participate inacademic extracurricular activities (click here to see the schedule). Students may choosewhich club or extra-help session they would like to attend each day. Some clubs require anextra out-of-school commitment, but others are offered on a drop-in basis. Students whoare not in good academic standing (one or more grades below 70%, or at a teacher'sdiscretion) are required to attend 9th-hour extra-help sessions, and will need to submitweekly reports of their 9th-period attendance to Assistant Principal Lovely. Students leavingearly must be off the premises by 2:50 PM. They may not loiter anywhere in theneighborhood, in cars, or on the school property. Students in good academic standing whochoose to leave at 2:45 PM may not return to LCHS to reenter the school or obtain rides.Students that act inappropriately while departing early will forfeit this privilege. All studentsmust be out of the school building by 3:30 PM at the end of the school day unless they areparticipating in an adult-sponsored activity.

Skiving Defined. Liberty's ninth-hour options are a great opportunity for students to getextra help in their studies. Students falling behind in their grades may be required by theirinstructors to attend 9th-hour study clubs, or zero-hour (morning) study sessions. Suchstudents who are required to attend, but fail to show up for these sessions will be given aconduct violation. The proper term for skipping these supplemental study sessions is
