Quick view of VMware Cloud Foundation

▪ Currently in Technology Preview, VMware Cloud™ on AWS is a vSphere-based cloud service. The new

service will bring our enterprise-class Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) software to the AWS cloud.

▪ Customers will be able to run any application across vSphere-based private, public and hybrid cloud

environments. It will be delivered, sold and supported by VMware as an on-demand, elastically

scalable service and customers will be able to leverage the global footprint and breadth of services from

AWS.

▪ This service will be powered by VMware Cloud Foundation. The service will integrate the capabilities of

our flagship compute, storage, and network virtualization products (vSphere, vSAN, and NSX), along with

vCenter management, and optimize it to run on next-generation elastic, bare metal, AWS infrastructure.

▪ This will enable customers to rapidly deploy secure, enterprise-grade AWS cloud-based resources that are

operationally consistent with vSphere-based clouds. The result is a comprehensive turnkey service

that works seamlessly with both on-premises private clouds and advanced AWS services.

Review of Historical Drivers to Public Cloud for Enterprises

▪ Benefits of a consumption based model

▪ CAPEX to OPEX

▪ No more hardware / storage refreshes

▪ Elastic:

– Scale on demand

– Shrink on demand

▪ Less pressure on infrastructure sizing

▪ Fail fast ability for innovation

▪ Faster path to “Cloud Native” development

and the power of PaaS tools

Note: To date, Public Cloud

usage / migration decisions

have been mostly binary

Heads up! Enterprise clients

put additional focus on Cloud

Dynamic Hybrid Cloud

New Thinking Around Public Cloud with VMware on AWS

▪ Truly a “game changer” around Public Cloud usage and consumption

– No longer a binary decision

▪ Ability to leverage Public Cloud options with existing datacenter abilities

▪ Leverage the Public Cloud experience without fully relying on stated

Public Cloud SLAs

▪ Foundation for access to native AWS services and integration approach to

application modernization

▪ Ability to “de-couple” workloads

▪ Enable consistency across on-premises and AWS Cloud through

simplified operations

– Allows more frictionless and rapid hybrid Cloud adoption

– Less retraining / retooling of existing technology staff

▪ Different approaches to Cloud migration planning and execution

But, is this a serious issue? Lets explore.

Quick Visit Around Vendor Lock-in

DEFINITION

Lock-in[lok-in]1. Lock-in is a situation in which a customer using

a product or service cannot easily transition to a

competitor’s product or service. Lock-in is

usually the result of proprietary technologies

that are incompatible with those of competitors.

Dynamic Hybrid Cloud

Common Thought Process around Cloud “Lock-in”

Standards are still being formed, and cloud computing is still too immature to reach the point where customers are demanding vendor independence.

Cloud is erasing the gains we’ve made in terms of vendor dependence lock-in.

Going with a cloud solution means buying into the specific protocols, standards and tools of the cloud vendor, making future migration costly and difficult.

When enterprises calculate the cost of leveraging cloud computing services, they don’t factor in the costs of migrating off the system – expenses which could be prohibitive and unexpected.

Lock-in? A Quick Historical Journey

So, has there ever been an option not to have Lock-in?

Dynamic Hybrid Cloud

Summary of Lock-In

Lock-in has been around since the “computing platform” became generally available

Abstract your data and logic, lock-in then dissipates

There has never been a wealth of tools before Public Cloud that enterprises can leverage

Leveraging the Public Cloud ecosystem will deliver value way beyond the lock-in fear

Remember history! There has never been true “unlock”

Own your data and logic, and embrace the power of the Cloud ecosystem of IaaS and PaaS

Four Positions We Find Clients in around VMWare Cloud™ on AWS

All in! (Committed)

▪ Really and willing to leverage VMware on AWS

▪ Have completed / or executing:

– Application Rationalization

– Datacenter Modernization

Call! (Committed but waiting for functionality to match enterprise needs)

▪ Infrastructure readiness approach

▪ Full evaluation / rationalization when functionality meets needs

Check! (Interested but want to rationalize overall application portfolio first)

▪ Application rationalize driver to adopt

▪ Datacenter modernization with adaption

Fold! (Committed to native Public Cloud)

▪ Focus on exiting IT business

▪ Asset free goal

Dynamic Hybrid Cloud

Critical focus areas to Consider – There is no “Instant-On” Button

▪ Understand how you will be consuming “bare metal” in AWS– Compute balanced to disk as example

▪ Pricing is similar to AWS but at the server, not instance level– On demand pricing – reserve instance (server) in future

▪ You CAN’T do a direct compare of a workload on AWS versus on VMware on AWS

▪ Obvious precursor – upgrade your VMware software prior to adoption

▪ Be prepared for SaaS – ESX and overall VMware software stack is now SaaS– Update cycles under SaaS control– May add challenges with your current on-premise versioning and updating

▪ Laser focus on VMware on AWS roadmap versus AWS announcements– AWS US West available now – more to follow– Production workload availability– Availability to consume from AWS

▪ Fully understand your workloads including future versions / releases

Identified Value Propositions for Adoption

Compelling Datacenter Event:▪ Hardware refresh

▪ Capacity challenges

▪ PaaS adoption needs with existing workloads

▪ Cloud Native push

Identified value to running VMware –

with stepping stone to Public Cloud:▪ Operational consistency (people, tools, investments,

operational procedures)

▪ Leverage of vRealize Suite (orchestration, automation, etc.)

▪ Minimize change management / technology disruption

with datacenter vs. Public Cloud

Balance VMware license investment:▪ Convert investment to credits on VMware on AWS

▪ Ability to strategically shift workloads to adopt

Public Cloud – free in house capacity for other uses

Dynamic Hybrid Cloud

Capgemini Considerations to Early Adoption

Look to leverage both VMware and AWS

▪ Don’t focus solely on leaving workloads on VMWare

Critical to evaluate both applications and infrastructure simultaneously

▪ Even more critical if not yet on version 6.03 or higher

Application evaluation for migration to Cloud is

no longer binary!▪ No longer on premise versus Public Cloud

▪ Previously non-qualified workloads back in play

▪ Options to de-couple workloads for additional value

Binary

Thinking

is Gone
