PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE LHASA APSO

STANDARD

1. ORIGIN AND PURPOSE:

Beyond the northern boundary of India,

whereMount Evereststands like a guardiansentinel, is the land of Tibet. A countryof•huge mountains, deep valleys,

windswept plateau warm summers and

cold winters, it is the home of the

Lhasa Apso.

After years of experimentation the

Buddhist Monks created the Lhasa Apso

as a living symbol of the legend inwhich Buddha was rescued by a lion. The Lhasa Apso exclusively a PalaceDog, was reserved for the Grand Lamasas one of the badges of their Holy

Si It is an ancient breed and

genealogical tables show them to be in

existence as far back as 800 B.C. Having

been bred for centuries as a special

indoor sentinal, the Lhasa Apso has

never lost this characteristic of keen

watchfulness.

2. GENERAL APPEARANCE

The Lhasa Apso is a small, exotic, very

hardy breed with a well developed body,

strong loins, good quarter and thighs.

The long, straight, hard, very dense

coat enhances the beauty of the breed

and completely covers the animal.

3. TEMPERAMENT

The Lhasa Apso is extremely adaptable,

of high intelligence, and inherently

faithful, He comprehends very quickly

what is expected or desired of him.

4. SIZE

Males are 10" to 11" (25.40 cm. to 27.94

cm.) at the withers with 1" (1.27 cm.)

tolerance.

level with or very slightly below the

lower eye rim.D. MOUTH - BITE Level preferred or

reverse scissors with full dentition.

Incisors to be in a straight line.

Lips - black.

E. EYES - Dark Brown. Not large and full

or small and sunken. The iris should

be a reasonable size, no white showing

at the base or top of the eye. The

eyes are frontally placed in an almond

shape black rim.

F. EARS Pendant. The ears should be set

well back on the skull at eye level

(not level with the topline of the skull)

head and in adults should reach the

level of the lower jaw.

laid back.

B. UPPER ARM - The upper arm may have a

very slight curve for the spring of the

rib.

C. LOWER ARM - The forelegs should not

be bowed. From the front, when the dog

is standing, the legs should be straight

and parallel, elbows well under the

D. PASTERNS - There should be no weak-

ness of the pasterns.

D. FEET - Short, round and compact with

good pads.

PADS- should be black. NAILS - Hard

and black. Dew Claws Permissable,

9. BODY

A. TOPLINE - Level.

B. CHEST - The so-called depth of chest

is not required. The Lhasa Apso should

be well ribbed up, i.e. the ribs should

extend well back along the body.

The slightly curved ribs should not

extend below the elbows.

C. LOIN - Slightly arched. Too long a

loin adds excess length to the back

and results in a loss of strength to

the forepart of the body. If the loin

is too short there will be a loss of

flexibility. The loins should be firmly

muscled.

D. CROUP - Has a degree of angulation

which gives power for the forward

propulsion.

E. ABDOMEN - Tucked up to a shallower

depth at the loin.

10. HINDQUARTERS Strongly muscled and in

balance with the forequarters.

A. HOCKS - When viewed from the rear the

hocks should be strong, straight,

parallel, perpendicular to the ground,

and turning neither in nor out. When

viewed from the side, the hock joint

should point backward but should not

extend beyond the stern of the dog.

When in motion, the hocks should flex to

show the pads of the feet when viewed

from the rear.

B. STIFLE BEND The stifle is moderately

bent.

C. FEET Same as in forequarters.

11. TAIL - The tail is set well up,

carried forward close to the back with

the tip hanging on either side of the

body. •The tail should not rise

vertically. A kink at the end is

permitted.

12. GAIT - An easy moving, free-flowing

trot is the normal pace of the Lhasa Apso.

This trot shows the character of his

movement at its best and is what should

be aimed for. The dog should not be

run in the show ring.

HEALTH CORNER

Mary Cole of our Health

Committee has sent a report to us

entitled: HYPERCALCEMIA SECONDARY TO

CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE IN THE DOG:

A REPORT OF FOUR CASES by Delmar R.

Finco, DVM, Ph.D. and George N.

Rowland, DVM, Ph.D. Due to the

length of the report, we are unable

to reprint it in its entirtty. Anyone

who would like a copy needs only to

mail a self-addressed, self stamped

envelope to us and we will send you a

copy.

The following is the SUMMARY

from the report:

Hypercalcemia occurred in 4 dogswith renal failure. Primary causes of

hypercalcemia previously described inthe dog (primary hyperparathyroidism,

pseudohyperparathyroidism, vitamin D

toxicosis) were not identified.

Increased concentrations of circula-

ting immunoreactive parathormone were

found in 2 dogs, and thyroparathy-

roidectory of 1 dog resulted indecreased

serum concentrations of that hormone

as well as of calcium. The latter

observations indicated that hyper-

calcemia was related to increased

parathormone activity, but the possi-

bility of other homeostatic imbalances

was not excluded.

It was concluded that renal

failure should be considered as a

primary cause of hypercalcemia, along

with other causes previously identified.

Liason Representative

RFD #1

Lucas, Kansas 67648

(913) 525-7055

Early in December I sent a letter

to all the Local Lhasa Apso Clubs listed

on the ALAC Secretary"s records. This

list included thirty-five clubs. At

this writing one month later I report

that three clubs' letters were returned

as "Not Deliverable". These three

clubs are: MIAMI VALLEY LHASA APSO CLUB,

THE NORTH TEXAS LHASA APSO CLUB, and

THE NORTH EAST LHASA APSO SPECIALTY

CLUB. May I reauest that anyone knowing

the status ofthese clubs please contact

me.

I received answers from only five

other clubs to date. I am not surprised.

The liason between ALAC and the local

clubs has in thepastbeen at a very low

ebb. If the local club was hosting a

Futurity or Specialty then there was

some correspondence. Those local clubs

eligible to hold licensed specialties

soon learned when they first applied

to the AKC that there was a parent club

named the American Lhasa Apso Club for

to it you had to send $10 and request

their permission to hold your licensed

specialty.

I hope as liason representative

to change much of -Cis and perhaps

make the parent club truly a "parent"

to those of you who would wish our help,

support and guidance. At one time ALAC

was offering a trophy at Local Special-

ties: I think that we should find out

if that is still true. Such a practicemight help your trophy chairman get his

job started.

The CANAL COUNTRY LHASA APSO CLUB

responded to my letter and sent along a

copy of their newsletter. A very

impressive piece of work for a club

only formed since July 1978 and covering

a sparsly populated area of about 120

miles. They try to hold a Fun Match

with each meeting at the request of their

members.

The HEART OF AMERICA LHASA APSO

CLUB responded with much enthusiasm

about liason with ALAC as they feel that

communication with ALAC has been so

difficult that it has been brought up

at more than one of their meetings.

They have a newsletter which is sent toALAC regularly. They will be hosting

the 1980 Mid-West Futurity for ALAC andlook foward to having specialties when

they are eligible.

THE LHASA APSO CLUB OF MEMPHIS

states that they have a monthly news

letter and are planning their third

sanctioned B match. They state that,

"Being a small club, we need support

and helpful means of continuing in the

goals we seek. We have felt very alone

in trying to keep the club together and

carrying on matches and educational

programs. Perhaps ALAC could offer some

helpful guidelines to small clubs who

are determined not to be beat."

The LHASA APSO CLUB OF WESTCHESTER,

INC. sent along a copy of their news-

letter DORJE and stated that they are a

Licensed Specialty Club. They think that

a competition to present the best .

Newsletter with an award is a good idea.

CALIFORNIA states that they have hosted

two Futurities and are holding their

second Specialty in February of 1979.

On February 24, 1979 they will hold what

they believe to be a Lhasa first, the

very first Sanctioned A-OB independently

held obedience match. They have a club

newsletter issued monthly to inform

their members of events of interest to

them as Lhasa fanciers with emphasis on

local club news and affairs.

Those of you who know me also know

that I am persistent, therefore, I shall

continue to contact all of you until I

have an up to date list and hopefully a

liason between us that will benefit you,

the Local club, ALAC and most importantly

the Lhasa Apso.

Shortly you will be hearing from the Host Committees with all the informationabout their Futurity and other shows and dog related functions going on thoseweekends. I'm sure you will want to attend.

All of them look like fun filled weekends and I urge you to enter as many ofyour eligible pups as you can. Lets make 1979 a record year for entries.

A word about eligibility: The designation of 'Region' on the nomination formhas NOTHING TO DO with the Futurity you choose to enter. It only relates tothe prize distribution of the &7.00 nomination fee you paid. There is noGeographic restriction on entering_your pups. For example, a pup whelped inthe Mid-west region may enter the Southern Futurity and his litter-mate mayenter the Western Futurity. The only restraint, of course is that EACH PUPMAY ENTER ONLY ONE FUTURITY.

A few words abmt entries: If you are planning to enter the EAST, MID-WEST,SOUTHERN OR WESTERN FUTURITIES, you should recognize that they are beingheld in conjuction with an All-Breed Point Show or Specialty Point Show. As aresult, you must enter and compete in the appropriate point-show class at thatshow. Your Futurity entry will be made on the same form and be treated as anadditional class.

We are now recieving nominations for the 1980 Futurity. If you had a litterRemember to nominate it within 90 days of whelp. Enclosed with this Bulletinis a blank form in case you don't have one handy.

Something. new has been added and that is a new Futurity Chairman, Dick Hoyt, after being our National Futurity Chairman for 4 years thought it time theFuturity go to someone else. He has spent many hours keeping records andmaking sure the Futurity was running smoothly, he felt it time the Futurityhave a new face. At the November Board Meeting I was appointed by the Boardof Directors of MAC to try and fill his shoes. I will give it a gun-hoeffort but that's a pretty tall order. Let me take the time to say THANK YOUDick for an excellent job: I'm sure all of us feel the same way.

If you need any forms or have any question fee free to contact me at - HelenE. Ingel 24 Idlewild Rd., Levittown, Pa., 19057: 215 945-5158

Thanks.Cordially,
