ourculture & investment in peopleWe are committed to supporting our attorneys at every step in their career. That’s why we created RISE, an intensive year-long development program customized for each new partner to help them level up during this exciting new stage of their career. The program provides insight into each partner’s strengths, how to leverage those and how to engage in firm resources. Our RISE classes routinely report that this program has been rejuvenating and inspiring, and makes them proud to be part of the Lane Powell family.

Our diversity & inclusion affinity group meets monthly to learn from each other about our experiences at Lane Powell and in the world. Our motto is that we can be the change we want to see at the firm by creating dialogue, listening closely and supporting one another. We sponsor firm-wide learning experiences such as the science of implicit bias and multi-generational differences in the workplace that connect the entire firm to build inclusivity. At our monthly meetings, everyone is invited and we tackle topics such as race, identity, covering, sterotypes and more. Through deep respect for one another we are able to speak meaningfully about these challenging subjects.

LP Academy answers some of those questions you don’t even know to ask when you’re a young lawyer. How do I grow my network? How do I work with my legal assistant? What do billing attorneys have to do? Which fork do I use?!? From the small to the big, LP Academy puts the professional development of our junior lawyers at the forefront. Additionally, we share LP Academy with our full attorney population for special speaker series that highlight conversations on innovation with our alumni and clients. Recent events include conversations with Starbucks Chief Compliance Officer Matt Swaya and Nokia Global Director of Ethics & Compliance Investigation Robert Calo.

MENTORING CIRCLE

Mentorship is a critical key to increasing diversity in law firms. It’s not enough to say we care about mentoring; at Lane Powell we put our commitment to mentoring into concrete action through our innovative mentoring circle program. All of our associates are invited to participate annually in this year-long program that puts three associates in a circle with a mentor partner. During the year, our mentoring circles tackle goals and learning objectives that makes certain each associate has a group of colleagues and a partner in their corner cheering them on. Our associates routinely report that our mentoring circle program is the most meaningful mentoring experience they’ve ever had.

We invest in a variety of initiatives and programs to ensure our talented women lawyers can succeed. From succession planning protocol that takes diversity and gender goals into account, to development programs for women attorneys, we are constantly looking for innovative ways to support the long-term career opportunities for women at Lane Powell.

PARENT CONNECT

Becoming a parent is a huge milestone in life. We want to provide support to all of our new parents to help them transition to the world of working parent. To that end, we provide a generous bonding leave package to all of our attorneys and we have a program designed to provide personal coaching to each of our new parents when he or she returns to the office after bonding leave. We work with each individual to ensure their schedule, practice and long-term career plans feel sustainable as this new chapter in life begins.

ourcommitment to the pipelineGeorge V. Powell Diversity ScholarshipThe George V. Powell Diversity Scholar is a summer associate in our Seattle or Portland office, who receives a $7,500 scholarship toward tuition and expenses during the student’s third year of law school. Established in 2005, the scholarships seeks candidates who will contribute meaningfully to the diversity of the legal community and who have a demonstrated desire to work, live and eventually practice law in Seattle or Portland. The candidates’ academic achievements and record of leadership abilities, community service and involvement in community issues are taken into consideration during the selection process. We are proud that many of our past George V. Powell scholars have joined the firm after law school and continue on to be partners.

We are so proud to have our George V. Powell scholars, such as Angelica Gonzalez with us. Angelica was recently profiled by the King County Bar Association celebrating her dedication to law school and incredible story of overcoming challenging odds and raising five kids while going to school full time. Visit lanepowell.com/Our-Diversity to watch the interview

Ron Beard ScholarshipIn addition to the George V. Powell Diversity Scholarship, we have partnered with the University of Washington School of Law to create an endowed scholarship in the name of our late partner, Ron Beard. Ron was a beloved colleague, excellent lawyer, and an acknowledged leader in the minority community. The Beard scholarship is given to a law student of color each year, providing financial help, as well as mentoring to encourage success in law school and the profession.

“Given Ron’s love of the University of Washington, the scholarship allowed us to honor him and at the same time support a wonderful institution. Ron worked as a crab fisher in the Bering Sea for seven years to put himself through college and law school. We know that it would have been deeply meaningful to Ron that this scholarship fund will help other promising young students of color pursue a career in law without having to put off their studies to work.”

– Charles W. Riley, Jr., President of Lane Powell

Gregoire FellowsDiversity in our profession can’t change unless we increase the diversity in our talent pipeline. To that end, Lane Powell is proud to be a founding supporting law firm of the Gregoire Fellows program, which provides tuition assistance and academic support to minority law students at the University of Washington School of Law. In addition, the Gregoire Fellows participate in a 1L summer program where they work at law firms and corporations in the Seattle area. We are honored to host multiple Gregoire Fellows each year as part of our summer associate program.

NW Minority Job FairOur commitment to supporting opportunities for underrepresented individuals dates back decades, including our founding co-sponsorship of the Northwest Minority Job Fair in 1987. The purpose of the job fair is to provide a forum for minority law students and attorneys to interview with a variety of legal employers.

“For more than 30 years, the job fair has provided employment and networking opportunities to ethnic minority law students and graduates, many of which have developed into job offers. The firm is proud to contribute to the continued success of the job fair, sharing in its commitment to diversifying the community.”

– Len Roden, Recruiting Manager at Lane Powell & member of the Board of the Directors for the NW Minority Job Fair

Leadership Council for Legal DiversityWe are proud to be a member of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD). This high-profile national organization, comprised of managing partners of major law firms and general counsel of public and private companies, is the national leader working to diversify the U.S. legal profession for now and future generations. Our participation in LCLD’s initiatives includes: (a) underwriting the participation of our first-year summer associates in LCLD’s Scholars Program, which provides mentoring and networking opportunities and events for law students; (b) sponsoring one attorney per year for LCLD’s Fellows Program, a year-long leadership training program with the goal of producing a diverse generation of up-and-coming attorneys with strong leadership and relationship skills who are committed to fostering diversity within their individual institutions and the profession at large; and (c)participating in LCLD’s Success Mentoring Program, providing mentoring to first-year law students from diverse backgrounds to maximize their potential both during law school and afterwards, as they prepare for the bar exam and launch their careers. Through our active involvement, Lane Powell helps support LCLD’s mission to increase diversity in the legal profession, to eliminate impediments and provide minorities and women with a full and fair opportunity to perform, to succeed and to lead. As a result, we have been recognized by LCLD as a “Top Performer,” identifying the firm as being one of its most active members who supports LCLD’s mission in many ways.
