History of Barangay Guadalupe

The only known fact about the history of Barangay Guadalupe points back on the

aspect of religious history of the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe. On the basis of oral

history, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and the panish con!uerors arri"ed in the shores of

an #icolas in the $%thcentury. There were fi"e &%' known (ugustinian friars na)ely*

(ndres de +rdaneta, Martin de ada, -iego de errera, (ndres de (guirre and Padre

de Ga)boa who were acceptable by the nati"es at that ti)e with their chieftain

Makahuko) with his wife Makiyong. hortly, Makahuko) as baptized under the

/hristian faith was na)ed o)ualdo with his wife Makiyong na)ed /leofe. 0n a while

their "illage was na)ed 1a Maldo23e after their "illage chieftain. The "illage na)e was

erroneously spoken thus the na)e is utterly broken and co)es now the na)e

G+(-(L+P4. (s baptis)al token to the con"erted chieftain with his wife, an i)age of

the Lady of Guadalupe sculpted fro) the Til)a of 5uan -iego, an (ztec "isionary, was

gi"en to o)ualdo and /leofe.

6hen the )issionaries left, the i)age was not gi"en due attention so it was

placed in a storehouse for ani)als. (s days went on, people ha"e always noticed bright

lights in the particular area. One day a chicken trapper tied his bait near the ca"e, the

soft earth ga"e way a religious i)age. The i)age was brought to an #icolas Parish. (

priest later identified this as the Lady of Guadalupe, 7La 8irgen Morena9 of Me:ico.

(fterward, chapel was built near the ca"e howe"er the ri"er near it o"erflowed so the

chapel was washed away. ubse!uently, another chapel was constructed on the site

where the present church was located but it was again destroyed by the hurricane in

$;$%. The i)age was then placed in the Parish of an #icolas for safekeeping and

borrowed during its 3iesta on -ece)ber $< of each year.

One day when it was ti)e for the i)age to be returned, it fell down standing

upright on the road facing Guadalupe. oon after, a bigger church was constructed in

honor of the Lady of Guadalupe.

=. Budget for health ser"ices ought to be increased as so for the health clinics to be

reno"ated, needed facilities will be ac!uired, and add e:tra personnel to cater for

the needs of the KH sitios in the barangay.

H. The sa)e could be said, ac!uisition of e:tra garbage trucks is needed. There are

=H personnel for the sanitation pro?ects including the collectors, dri"ers, and the

enforcers with only a few garbage truck. 0t is first2rate that the barangay could

"ery well pro"ide =H personnel but they re)ain handicapped when garbage

trucks are una"ailable. cheduling and ti)e esti)ates could "ery well be

pro"ided by engineering graduates and O5Ts.

%. The go"ern)ent agencies and instru)entalities are now engaged in infor)ation

and co))unication technology. ( website for the barangay ought to be

de"eloped. The technology would greatly contribute in )aking the barangay

transparent in their ser"ices, progra)s, and de"elop)ent plans. Thru the

website, sharing of infor)ation and co))unication is )uch easier to achie"e at

a lesser cost on both parties the barangay and the people.

$. The present building )ay be reno"ated proper "entilation is to be considered.

There are other areas in the building which is not used it could be utilized for

trainings and se)inars in the barangay or for other i)portant purpose.

$. 4cono)ic de"elop)ent in the barangay should be gi"en )uch i)portance..

-espite the "ery high potential in "enturing "aried sectors business such as

wholesale and retail trade, )anufacturing, hotels and restaurants, real estate and

renting as well as ser"ice business, the budget for econo)ic de"elop)ent is

undersized thus the barangay is incapable of producing goods and ser"ices. 0f

the budget is to be ad?usted, one feasible pro?ect )ay be putting up a co))ercial

building in M.8elez treet, Barangay Guadalupe in support to )icro, s)all, and

)ediu) enterprises. The concessionaires would be rented by these enterprises

according to contract thus the barangay could generate its own inco)e. (nother

feasible proposal which is a li"elihood pro?ect would be "enturing into food

processing business wherein the barangay would produce "egetable2based

products sell it the potential )arket. 3urther)ore the pro?ect cost is lesser

co)pared to other pro?ects.

)anaged and operated by the officers of the organization. Other inter"entions such as

technology trainings, product de"elop)ent, designs, as well as product packaging will be
