  • DIRECTOR'S NOTES

" It was written on the eve of our entrance into World War II and I think it mostly comes alive under conditions of crises:·

Thornton Wilder Preface to SKIN OF OUR TEETH

THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH is a salute to the American Family and their quest for survival. It exposes them as they are; quite often imperfect but filled with the faith that they can always start over again. They overcome Flood, Famine, Hurricane, Walls of Ice and finally, their worst threat. World War.

We have chosen to pull imagery and styles from the period of the 1940's that somehow fall into that vague category of "Americana"; a mishmash of high camp, famous photographs, personalities, mixed with a dimestore practicality. We feel this aptly reflects our heritage as Americans.

I hope that somehow we can share something special with all of you, and touch you some way either by laughter or by tears.

    Enjoy!

    Hans Friedrichs

ABOUT THE CAST lt STAFF (This Information was available at the time the program went to pres~

    R. NEIL ALEXANDER (Homer/Broadcast Official) Bob has been are-cent staunch addition to the Civic family. Aside from serving as Assis-tant Director of BWES FOR MR. CHARLIE, he ran set crew for CHICAGO, and has recently been elected to the Board of Directors ..

DAVID ANDREWS (Henry) has appeared in several shows with AACT, and in July will be s.een as Lancelot in Chelsea Area Players' CAMELOT, that is, if anyone can find him. David mysteriously disappeared dur-ing production week. His role in SKIN OF OUR TEETH WILL BE PLAYED BY HIS STUNT DOUBLE, Ernie.

FATTI ATTAR (Mammoth Voice/Bingo Bunny) was last seen as the Defense Attorney in AACT's BWES FOR MR. CHARLIE, and is sched-uled to appear in the Main Street production of MUSEUM, opening Ju-ly 10. She enjoys her job at Comerica Bank and all the people she works with.

SKIF BAILEY (Conveener) "Working as a Student Financial Aid Counselor necessitates a release. My experience with AACT is wonder-ful for this. As a newcomer to the area AACT has provided me the op-portunity to meet new people:' Skip was last seen onstage with AACT in ROYAL FAMILY.

  • .,

SUZANNE BARTHOLOMEW (Makeup Designer) Suzanne has styled hair for AACT's past .3 shows, previously working as a hair designer in theater in Birmingham. Suzanne works in town as a hair stylist at "A Cut Above:'

LIZ FOSTER (Mrs. Antrobus) Liz enjoys playing Mrs. A. because it gives her an almost painless chance to be a wife and mother. Her other acting credits include WAITING FOR LEFTY, GUYS AND DOLLS at Wayne State U., WALTZ OF THE TOREADORS and SKIN ... at Eastern Michigan U., and a kooky Chorus Leader in THE CLOUDS for AACT Mainstreet. She recently wrote and directed AGAINST THE WALL at EMU, and found the experience fluffy and ethereal.

HANS FRIEDRICHS (Director) still is a native of Ann Arbor, although for the last four years he has lived in 1bronto attending the Ryerson Theatre School and directing for the Ryerson Theatre Company. His acting credits are many. His directing assignments include ASHES (1bronto), AACT's TEN LITTLE INDIANS, Ryerson's MIRANDOLINA and OVERRULED. Hans recently directed his first film, THE KING OF YORKVILLE for First Choice pay TV.

CHRIS HALL (Miss E. Muse/Musette) is new to AACT but not to the stage, having recently appeared with the Saline Area Players in FID-DLER ON THE ROOF, and as Winnifred in ONCE UPON A MATTRESS. In real life, Chris is a dentist.

TERRY JOE HARRISON (Telegraph Boy) This is Terry's first ap-pearance with AACT. His acting credits include CARNIVAL, HELLO, DOL-LY! and MUSIC MAN. He would like to dedicate his performance in SKIN OF OUR TEETH to his family.

THOM JOHNSON (Lighting Designer/Stage Manager) TJ was last stage manager for ANYTHING GOES. He is the resident lighting designer for People Dancing and also acts, directs and serves as President of AACT's Board of Directors. TJ smokes an occasional cigar and does not jog.

MARILYN KENNEDY (Producer/Miss M. Muse) Marilyn has been very active with AACT the past 6 years-acting, singing, producing, dress-ing sets, designing graphics and serving as Production Coordinator and Vice President of the Board. Her acting roles with Civic include Mother Abbess in SOUND OF MUSIC and Morgan Le Fey in CAMELO'{. Marilyn spends her "spare time" working as a graphic designer and coping with a teen-age daughter and a Great Dane puppy.

  • CHRISTOPHER KOROW (Announcer/Fitzpatrick) has been deeply in-volved with AACT for almost two years. He's done everything from sling-ing paint in the shop to eating mass quantities of food on stage as Ray in Main Street's LONE STAR. This is his first role on the "Main Stage" and it's an experience he's long been anticipating. In his other life, Chris is a computer systems analyst at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

SHIRLEY MALLETTE (Props/Set Dressing) Shirley has been very ac-tive behind the scenes for almost three years in the areas of sets, props and costumes. Her threatened sabbatical should be coming up very soon. (However, we hope not Shirley!)

JOHN MOUAT AND LISA SNAPP' (Co-Set Designers) John and Lisa were co-set designers for this season's production of ORPHEUS DESCENDING and co-builders for last year's THE LATE CHRISTOPHER BEAN. They have both worked on set and running crews for a number of shows in the last couple of years. Lisa is a mechanical engineer and John is an architect here in Ann Arbor.

NANCY ANNE NIEZIELSKI (Gladys) is making her AACT debut. A senior at Eastern Michigan U. majoring in theatre and writing, she plans after graduation to move to Chicago and become an immense-ly famous comedienne. Or else she wants Vanna White's job on "Wheel of Fortune:'

CHRISTINA PARKER (Miss T. Muse/Musette) comes to her first AACT production with credits from community theatres in Greenviiie, Alpena and Saline, including roles in ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, 6 RMS RIV VU, and as Emily Dickinson in THE BELLE OF AMHERST. By vocation she is a social worker; by avocation an avid collector of antiques.

KAARINA QUINNELL (Sabina) A recent theatre graduate of Northern Michigan U. Kaarina has appeared in summer stock at Thunder Bay, and locally with Suspension Theatre and the String Puppet Theatre. She was assistant to the director of AACT's Main Street production of LONE STAR and LAUNDRY AND BOURBON and now makes her first Civic stage appearance. She is convinced that "the maid" is always the best part.

RITA RODENBERG (Props/Set Dressing) Rita has dabbled in set painting for AACT in the past year and has taken a swing at props for the first (and, hopefully, far from last) time this year.

LARRY RUSINSKI (Mr. Antrobus) has appeared in numerous produc-tions throughout the sprawling Midwest including, for AACT, STEAM-BATH, Ionesco's THE LESSON (both on Main Street), CHARLEY'S AUNT,

LOOK HOMEWARD ANGEL, and BELLS ARE RINGING. Larry collects ven-triloquism dummies, stupid salt and pepper shakers, advertising dolls, and tacky tourist paraphenalia. He is currently working on a computer program to create literary metaphors, and is writing the sequel to a certain Shakespeare play.

SARAH SALISBURY (Fortune Teller) makes her AACT debut in this pro-duction while completing her Master's degree in theatre at the U. of M. She comes with a wide range of credits in theatres from New York to California, including roles in COMEDY OF ERRORS, AS YOU LIKE IT, OUR TOWN, BLACK COMEDY, and this year's U. of M. LYSISTRATA. Ac-ting, she says, is her hobby; her vocation is her 9-year-old daughter Lay Ia.

ANN VANDEMARK (Dinosaur Voice/Teacher) enjoyed dancing and singing in ANYTHING GOES, and now appears for the second time on the AACT stage. Dexter audiences have seen her recently as Mammy Yokum in Lit: ABNER and as Gladys in PAJAMA GAME. Ann is a Speech-Language Pathologist in private practice.

WENDY WRIGHT (Assistant Director) Wendy was director of the suc-cessful Main Street production of LAUNDRY AND BOURBON and LONE STAR in January, and Assistant Director for TEN LITTLE INDIANS last summer. Her acting credits include ORPHEUS DESCENDING and THE CLOUDS, both for AACT, and appearances with Black Sheep Theatre and U. of M. players. She's truly enjoyed working with this wonderful cast.
