1. Accessing the LexisSmart Precedents PlatformTo access the LexisSmart Precedents website click on the following link: www.lexissmart.co.uk

LexisSmart Precedents can also be accessed through other LexisNexis subscriptions.

LexisPSL or LexisLibrary:

Clicking on the arrow next to the LexisLibrary (or LexisPSL) icon in the top-left of the screen in any LexisLibrary or LexisPSL window will open a dropdown menu where LexisSmart Precedents can be accessed.

Select precedents on LexisPSL contain an ‘LS’ icon which, if selected, will open the precedent in the LexisSmart Precedents platform.

If requested, sign in using your LexisNexis log in details. If you can’t remember your log in details then visit our reset page, call 0330 161 1234 or get in touch with your usual LexisNexis contact.

2. Finding a Smart Precedent

Go to the Find Precedents tab and either search or browse for the Smart Precedent you need.

Tip: if you use a particular Smart Precedent regularly you could click on the next to its name to add it as a favourite or even save its URL as a bookmark in your browser or intranet.

Select a precedent you would like to edit to open the questionnaire.

3. Start the Questionnaire

Once a Smart Precedent has been selected you will be asked to apply a document name and (optional) client/ matter reference. These labels will help you identify the questionnaire in the future.

Once the questionnaire is started it is important to read the introductory text on the first page to understand the purpose of the Smart Precedent and any assumptions applied, to ensure it is suitable.

4. Complete the Questionnaire

The Topic Progress shows how far through the questionnaire you are. It is also possible to hide the progress bar.

On-line guidance may include links to LexisPSL or other resources.

Quit the questionnaire without saving.

Jump back to the previous question page.

Save and quit the questionnaire.

Skip to the next mandatory question. Using Ffwd is the quickest way to complete the questionnaire. However, the output document may be less complete than if every question is answered.

Jump to the next question page (if all mandatory questions have been answered).

5. Generating a Microsoft Word DocumentAfter the completion of the questionnaire a summary and preview are displayed.

If you click on any item bracketed by then you will be taken back to the relevant question to make edit your response.

Once ready, click Next and then confirm you are ready to assemble the document. If the document is very large then assembly make take a few moments.

Finally, chose which document(s) you wish to download and the download will begin shortly.

Once downloaded, the document will be available in Word format to continue editing and finalising.

6. Using My DocumentsThe My Documents tab shows all the questionnaires you have worked on, whether complete or not. Incomplete questionnaires are labelled as such. By default, the list in My Documents is set out in chronological order, with the most recent questionnaire first, but the filters at the top of the page can be used to sort through questionnaires.

Download (only available for completed questionnaires): reveals a list of documents that can be downloaded directly, without revisiting the questionnaire.

Rename: Change the name and/ or reference of a questionnaire.

Edit: Opens the questionnaire, either for editing or completing.

Copy: Creates a copy of a questionnaire and its answers and provides an opportunity to give it an alternative name and reference.

Delete: Permanently removes a questionnaire from My Documents.
