STEWARDSHIPNathan Meador & Heath R. CurtisNathan Meador and Heath R. Curtis present a practical theology of stewardship focused on ministry in service of the gospel. Guiding pastors away from the pitfalls of idolatry around money, they instead call stewards to embrace their identity in Christ and encourage their congregations to do the same. This fresh approach to stewardship reorients both individuals and congregations toward their true purpose as stewards who have been baptized into Christ.

“From the identity of the steward to the culture of the congregation, the authors provide a guidebook for pastors, congregational leaders, and members as they live out what it means to be a steward by God’s design.”—WAYNE J. KNOLHOFF, former director of stewardship for the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, and former director of the Center for Stewardship at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis

“These pastors ground stewardship in our creation and redemption in Christ. They reveal its pastoral and congregational contours. And, with wit and wisdom, they map out the biblical path to stewardship that is in keeping with our life as the redeemed children of God, called to be stewards of his creation.”—CHAD BIRD, Scholar in Residence at 1517

AUTHORNathan Meador is senior pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Plymouth, Wisconsin, and assistant coordinator for stewardship for the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Heath R. SMALL PREACHING25 LITTLE THINGS YOU CAN DO NOW TO BECOME A BETTER PREACHER Jonathan T. PenningtonIt’s not often that we hear the virtues of the small. Our culture teaches that bigger is better—and that includes church ministry and preaching, too. But what if rather than swinging for the fences, preachers focused on improving their sermons through small habits, practices, and exercises? What if smaller is better?

In a world where “small” isn’t always celebrated, Jonathan T. Pennington provides Small Preaching, a short book of simple tips that can have revolutionary effects over time. Pennington offers preachers 25 words of wisdom that will help shape their preaching for the better.

“This book beautifully combines the renowned exegetical and hermeneutical skills of an eminent New Testament scholar with the heart and passion of a shepherd who loves God’s flock.”—HERSHAEL W. YORK, dean of the School of Theolo-gy and Victor and Louise Lester Professor of Preaching, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

AUTHORJonathan T. Pennington is associate professor of New Testament interpretation and director of research doctoral studies at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is also a preaching pastor at Sojourn East Church in Louisville, Kentucky. GOD REFORMS HEARTSRETHINKING FREE WILL AND THE PROBLEM OF EVIL

Thaddeus Williams

When responding to objections that both evil and God can exist, many resort to a “free will defense,” where God is not the creator of evil but of human freedom, by which evil is possible. In God Reforms Hearts, Thaddeus Williams offers a friendly challenge to the central claim of the free will defense—that love is possible only with true (or libertarian) free will. Williams argues that much thinking on free will fails to carve out the necessary

distinction between an autonomous will and an unforced will. With clarity, precision, and charity, he judges the merits and shortcomings of the relational free will defense while offering a philosophically and biblically robust alternative that draws from theologians of the past to point a way forward.

TRANSFORMATIVE WORDGod’s Word is transformative. It is this conviction which gives the Transformative Word series its name and its unique character. Series Editors Craig G. Bartholomew and David J. H. Beldman have worked alongside authors to identify a key theme in each book of the Bible, and each volume provides careful Biblical exegesis centered on that gripping theme. The result is an engaging, accessible thematic exploration of a biblical book, poised to offer you new and refreshing insights. See more titles in this series at LexhamPress.com/Transformative-Word

In Transformed in Christ: 1 Corinthians, Ron Elsdon and William Olhausen show us how Paul uses the cross to define the distinctive patterns of life and behavior to which Christians are called. The transformation that comes from cross-shaped wisdom is not a singular moment in a believer’s life, but a continual process of refinement and spiritual growth. The result is a living, countercultural faith marked by discernment, wisdom, and love.

FINDING SOUL REST40 DAYS OF CONNECTING WITH CHRIST: A DEVOTIONAL

Curtis ZackeryJesus tells us that he “will give us rest.” But what does that look like in a society marked by increasing rates of overcommitment and burnout? Too many of us have built unhealthy cycles of rest, striving and straining against God’s intent for our lives.

In Finding Soul Rest, Curtis Zackery provides a practical guide to finding the deep soul rest that Jesus promises. And it all centers around renewing and restoring our relationship with Christ. This thoughtful devotional on rest calls us to the intentional work of self-examination, helping us move toward a purposeful and sustainable life with Jesus.

AUTHOR Curtis “CZ” Zackery is the author of Soul Rest. He has served in various ministry and leadership roles for the past 20 years—including church planting, pastoring, and speaking on rest, the kingdom of God, and the beauty of the gospel.

WONDERFULLY MADEA PROTESTANT THEOLOGY OF THE BODY

John W. KleinigWhen it comes to thinking about our bodies, confusion reigns. In our secular age, there has been a loss of the body’s goodness, purpose, and end. Many people, driven by shame and idolatry, abuse their body through self-harm or self-improvement. How can we renew our understanding and see our bodies the way God does?

In Wonderfully Made, John Kleinig forms a properly biblical theology of our bodies. Through his keen sensitivity to Scripture’s witness, Kleinig explains why bodies matter, addressing issues like shame, chastity, desire, gender dysphoria, and more, by integrating them into the biblical vision of creation.

“With scriptural depth, and without minimizing the ugliness of sin and death, Kleinig shows us how our bodies belong to God’s good news of salvation, love, and life. This book is an

invitation not only to a more faithful practice of singleness or marriage, but also to a deeper sense of what it means to worship the incarnate Lord.”

—MATTHEW LEVERING, James N. and Mary D. Perry Jr. Chair of Theology, Mundelein Seminary

THE TRINITY AND THE BIBLEON THEOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION

Scott R. SwainIn The Trinity and the Bible, Scott R. Swain asserts that not only does the Bible reveal the Trinity, but the Trinity illuminates our reading of the Bible. Swain reflects on method and applies a Trinitarian framework to three exegetical studies. Explorations of three genres of New Testament literature—Gospel, epistle, and apocalyptic—display the profits of theological interpretation. Through loving

attention to the Scriptures, one can understand and marvel at the singular identity and activity of the triune God. AUTHORScott R. Swain is president and James Woodrow Hassell Professor of Systematic Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida. CARL F. H. HENRY ON THE HOLY SPIRITJesse M. PayneIn Carl F. H. Henry on The Holy Spirit, Jesse M. Payne argues that Henry cannot truly be understood apart from his mature pneumatology. The Spirit plays a vital role in three major areas of Henry’s theology: revelation, ecclesiology, and ethics. These seemingly disparate topics are tied together by his view of a Spirit-inspired Bible ordering a Spirit-enlivened body composed of Spirit-filled believers.

“Jesse Payne’s work on the role of the Holy Spirit in the theology of Carl F. H. Henry provides a fresh and convincing correction to the perception that Henry’s theology was one-sided, lacking a developed pneumatology. HEALING THE SCHISM KARL BARTH, FRANZ ROSENZWEIG, AND THE NEW JEWISH-CHRISTIAN ENCOUNTER

Jennifer M. Rosner In Healing the Schism, Jennifer M. Rosner maps the new Jewish-Christian encounter from its origins in the early twentieth-century pioneers to its current representatives. Rosner first traces the thought of Karl Barth and Franz Rosenzweig and brings them into conversation. Rosner then outlines the reassessments and developments of post-Holocaust theological architects that moved the dialogue forward and set the stage for today. She considers the recent work of Messianic Jewish theologian Mark S. Kinzer and concludes by envisioning future possibilities.

“In this exciting book, Jennifer M. Rosner orchestrates a meeting of minds between Barth and Rosenzweig, and she does so with reference to a phenomenon both thinkers foreshadow but neither foresaw: the emergence of theologically articulate Messianic Judaism. IN THE NAME OF OUR LORD FOUR MODELS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BAPTISM, CATECHESIS, AND COMMUNION

Jonathan D. Watson

Christians divide on how one enters the church body. Matters are quickly complicated once other factors are considered, such as faith, instruction, baptism, first Communion, and formal membership. Who should be baptized? What role does instruction play? And what is the best sequence for these things?

Jonathan D. Watson’s In the Name of Our Lord provides an explanatory typology and incisive analysis for thinking through these interrelated questions. Watson’s four-model framework accounts for the major historical varieties of relationship between baptism and catechesis as rites of initiation into the church. With this framework in place, Watson then considers each model in relation to the others.

ANGLICANISMA REFORMED CATHOLIC TRADITION

Gerald BrayWhat is Anglicanism? There are many associations that come to mind. Whether it is the buildings, the unique history, the prayers, or church government, often we emphasize one aspect against others. Is the Anglican church a Protestant church with distinctive characteristics, or a Catholic church no longer in communion with Rome?

In Anglicanism: A Reformed Catholic Tradition, Gerald Bray argues that some theological trajectories are more faithful than others to the nature and history of the Church of England. Readers looking to understand the diversity, nature, and future of Anglicanism will be helped by Bray’s historical examination.

HIDDEN AND REVEALEDTHE DOCTRINE OF GOD IN THE REFORMED AND EASTERN ORTHODOX TRADITIONS

Dmytro BintsarovskyiIn Hidden and Revealed, Dmytro Bintsarovskyi explores the hiddenness and revelation of God in two separate theological streams—Reformed and Orthodox. Bintsarovskyi shows that an understanding of both traditions reflects a deep structure of shared language, history, and commitments, while nevertheless reflecting real differences. With Herman Bavinck and John Meyendorff as his guides, Bintsarovskyi advances ecumenical dialogue on a doctrine central to our knowledge of God.

“Fair-minded but decisive in his evaluation of both the Reformed and Palamite approaches, Bintsarovskyi charts his own path in assessing the knowability of God, rightly centering on God’s revelation in Jesus Christ. This is ecumenical dialogue at its best.” —HANS BOERSMA, Saint Benedict Servants of Christ Chair in Ascetical Theology, Nashotah House Theological Seminary

REFORMED DOGMATICSA SYSTEM OF CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY

Geerhardus J. Vos Ed. Richard B. Gaffin, Jr.

Geerhardus Vos’s Reformed Dogmatics represents the early theological thought of one of the premier Reformed thinkers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Originally self-published in 1896 under the title Gereformeerde Dogmatiek, Vos’s five volumes were not available in English until more than a century after their original publication.

Now, this new edition brings together all five volumes of the English translation of Reformed Dogmatics:

· Volume 1: Theology Proper · Volume 2: Anthropology · Volume 3: Christology · Volume 4: Soteriology · Volume 5: Ecclesiology, The Means of Grace,

Eschatology

Vos is perhaps best known to English speakers for his books Pauline Eschatology (1930) and Biblical Theology: Old and New Testaments (1948). His strong grounding in biblical scholarship and biblical theology gives Reformed Dogmatics a unique, fresh, biblical perspective. Although this work is systematic in nature, Vos brings the skills and acumen of a biblical theologian to the task.

“Like books, people can become ‘classics.’ Great in their day, but richer and more fulfilling with time. Not yet a classic, Vos’s never-before-published Reformed Dogmatics is more like a lost Shakespeare play recently discovered.” —MICHAEL HORTON, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California

ON BUSINESS & ECONOMICSIn this anthology of essays, speeches, and reflections, we see Kuyper’s attempts to think positively and creatively about the calling and potential of business. Included are his ideas about economic freedom, the eternal value of earthly work, stewardship and philanthropy, economic globalization, the workings of God’s grace in business, and the social function of money.

“This is an invaluable collection of material on Kuyper’s critical yet world-affirming approach to business and economics. This volume contains a rich array of material that illuminates how Kuyper’s view of ‘common grace’ can hold together the worlds of theology and economics, creating important possibilities for dialogue and debate.” —ALISTER MCGRATH, Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion, University of Oxford.

HEBREWS VERSE BY VERSEGrant R. Osborne with George H. Guthrie

In Hebrews Verse by Verse, the late Grant R. Osborne, with George H. Guthrie, shows readers how this beautifully crafted letter encourages believers to endure in faithfulness to Jesus. By using Scripture and theology to lay the foundation for these exhortations, the central message of Hebrews continues to be relevant for the church today. Osborne’s commentary delves into the grand implications of Christ’s identity and its importance for our spiritual lives.

“With this series, readers will have before them what we—his students—experienced in all of Professor Osborne’s classes: patient regard for every word in the text, exegetical finesse, a preference for an eclectic resolution to the options facing the interpreter, a sensitivity to theological questions, and most of all a reverence for God’s word.”—SCOT MCKNIGHT, Julius R. Mantey Chair of New Testament, Northern Seminary

AUTHORSGrant R. Osborne was for many years professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He is the author of numerous books, including The Hermeneutical Spiral: A Comprehensive Introduction to Biblical Interpretation, and commentaries on Revelation, Romans, Matthew, John, James, 1–2 Peter, and Jude. He also taught at Winnipeg Theological Seminary and the University of Aberdeen, and he pastored churches in Ohio and Illinois.

George H. Guthrie is professor of New Testament at Regent College. He has published commentaries on Hebrews and 2 Corinthians. He also has written a number of works designed to equip the church to better understand and apply Scripture, including Reader’s Guide to the Bible, Reading God’s Story, and Read the Bible for Life.

SIGNS OF THE MESSIAHAN INTRODUCTION TO JOHN’S GOSPEL

Andreas J. KöstenbergerHave you ever asked God for a sign? Throughout Scripture, God gave signs to his people, whether mighty acts during the exodus, or miracles through Elijah and Elisha. Jesus was also asked for a sign. Yet despite seven remarkable signs he gave, his people refused to believe him.

In Signs of the Messiah, Andreas J. Köstenberger—veteran New Testament scholar and expert on the Gospel of John—guides readers through John and highlights its plot and message. John’s Gospel is written to inspire faith in Jesus. By keeping the

Gospel’s big picture in view, readers will see Jesus’s mighty signs and be compelled to trust more fully in the Messiah.

AUTHORAndreas J. Köstenberger is research professor of New Testament and biblical theology and director of the Center for Biblical Studies at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. More on DemonsIn Demons, Michael Heiser debunks popular presuppositions about the very real powers of darkness. Rather than traditions, stories, speculations, or myths, Demons is grounded in what ancient people of both the Old and New Testament eras believed about evil spiritual forces and in what the Bible actually says. You’ll come away with a sound, biblical understanding of demons, supernatural rebellion, evil spirits, and spiritual warfare.

AUTHOR Michael S. Heiser is a groundbreaking author, speaker, and scholar pushing Christians to dig deep into Scripture and see things afresh. His varied academic background enables him to operate in the realm of critical scholarship and the wider Christian community. He knows how to present complex topics in a way that’s accessible and engaging to scholars and laypeople alike. And with his inquisitive mind, he’s always seeking out new subjects to shine a fresh light on.

“This book brings clarity and coherence to what the Bible is and is not trying to tell us about the nature and origins of spiritual evil. Get ready for many lightbulb moments, and for a whole new appreciation of biblical texts you thought you already understood.” —TIM MACKIE, co-creator of The Bible Project

The study will correct widely held errors in modern demonology and make us more faithful followers of the One who has won the decisive victory over the devil.” —GERRY BRESHEARS, professor of theology, Western Seminary, Portland

LEXHAM GEOGRAPHIC COMMENTARYEd. Barry J. Beitzel

LEXHAM GEOGRAPHIC COMMENTARY ON ACTS THROUGH REVELATION

The Lexham Geographic Commentary on Acts through Revelation puts readers in the sandals of the apostles as they travel throughout the Mediterranean, explaining the geographical setting for the spread of Christianity in the first century. Geography is a central concern throughout the writings of Paul and the apostles, but the full significance of its geographical context is easily overlooked without a familiarity with the places, the types of transportation, the relative distances, and the travel conditions around the ancient Mediterranean. Luke’s account mentions places from all over the known world, and Paul’s missionary travels covered an estimated 15,000 miles by land and sea. The Lexham Geographic Commentary gives you insight into the importance of all of these locations—both culturally and spatially—and provides a deeper understanding of the spread of early Christianity. “First-rate scholarship all bundled into an accessible format. I will not study from Acts to Revelation without having this volume at my side.” —SCOT MCKNIGHT, professor of New Testament, Northern Seminary

EDITOR Dr. Barry J. Beitzel is professor emeritus of Old Testament and Semitic languages at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois, USA.
