HRH The Countess of Wessex officially opens new building

It wasn’t the warmest spring day or indeed the sunniest but it didn’t matter. The visit from HRH The Countess of Wessex brought both sunshine and warmth to Lewis-Manning and all who were presented to her.

Everyone involved in the visit, the police, the palace and the Lord Lieutenant for Dorset’s office, went out of their way to ensure that the day was a huge success and that the Countess was able to meet and talk to as many patients, and staff as possible.

Unfortunately we couldn’t invite everyone to be here as the visit was as low-key as possible and that did mean that a decision was made that only patients, staff and volunteers who are normally here on Fridays could attend. Interestingly, there was extremely tight security and number plates of visiting and parked cars were monitored and indeed the names of everyone attending were required.

Her Royal Highness was interested in everything at Lewis-Manning but it was her conversations with patients that will stand out for me as the key memory from the day. She sat next to patients, she knelt next to patients, and she spoke to everyone in the most friendly, gentle and gracious way. Everyone was talking about the visit for at least two weeks before she came and for at least two weeks afterwards! Do look at the photographs of the ponies (see p3) that were made by Sam and Sue and are now called Sam, Sue and Christine by Lady Louise, the Countess’ daughter.

The day marked for us a real milestone. Having commissioned the building in May 2012 – two years later we have a royal opening. There has been so much achieved in those two years - the building is now fully fitted out including all the bedrooms. We have developed services across the organisation including extended days for day hospice patients, carers’ groups, and

groups for patients who are living with head and neck cancer, as well as overnight stays for some patients (who don’t need nursing care) within our living well courses. (It might be useful to see the chart on our website that builds on our business plan of 2012). We are now working towards opening the bedrooms in a managed way, slowly but surely.

Extended days for day hospice utilise the bedrooms and, as soon as we can, we will be having respite overnight care for day hospice patients who need some more support, especially through their bouts of intensive treatments. All the work utilising the bedrooms is led by the in-patient sister Val Ennis who is a very welcome new member of the team.

We have achieved so much in such a short time, but we still have much to do. We are not yet open 24/7 for end of life care. But we are getting there and we continue to need your support in every way, including helping us as a volunteer, generating critical income, and generally spreading the word.

The royal visit marked our achievements, reminded us all of how much we have done, and allowed us a day to reflect and then look forward on all that still needs to be done – with your help.

The Countess of Wessex arrived at 10.30am and was greeted by Mrs Jacqueline Swift, Deputy Lieutenant of Dorset, who presented her to Lord Lieutenant Cadet, Sergeant Evie Irving, The Mayor and Mayoress of Poole, Councillor Phillip Eades and Helen Eades, The Sheriff of Poole, Councillor Peter Adams and Robert Syms, MP for Poole, as well as Paul Crompton, Chairman of Lewis-Manning and Chief Executive Elizabeth Purcell.

The Countess was then given a tour by Elizabeth where she spent over an hour chatting with staff and patients in the hospice’s Lymphoedema, Breathlessness and Physiotherapy Clinics. She then went into Day Hospice, where she was presented with three handmade felt New Forest toy ponies made by the creative art group to take home for her children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.

In the In-Patient Unit the Countess met four patients, as well as the hospice’s Complementary Therapist, who was giving a foot massage demonstration. A small group of invited guests were introduced to the Countess before she made her way outside to unveil a commemorative plaque to mark the special occasion. Following a welcome introduction from Paul Crompton the Countess spoke of how hospice visits are “one of the most worthy and uplifting things” that she does and how it was a “distinct privilege” and “truly an honour” to meet all the people that care and volunteer.

She then went on to praise everyone that had fundraised for the charity, remarking that it’s “an undertaking that is not easy.”

Before leaving the Countess signed the hospice guest book and shared a joke with patient Maurice, 89, who presented her with a posy made by a Lymphoedema patient that contained mint to enhance the scent.

Debra has been a big supporter since she moved to the area a few years ago and has been involved in many of our events including the Ladies Lunch, Summer Fayre, Starlight Stroll, James Bond ‘Skyfall’ charity night and more recently hosted the Stars In Their Eyes fundraiser.

Elizabeth said, “We are absolutely delighted that Debra has accepted the invitation from the Chairman and Board to become a Patron of Lewis-Manning Hospice. Debra has been such a committed supporter since she moved into the area and we have all been very grateful to her for her time and energy.

Debra joins a growing group of influential and well known people who have formalised their relationship with the hospice at this exciting time in our development. Welcome Debra!”

Debra herself said, “I feel honoured to have been asked to become a Patron for Lewis-Manning Hospice. I’m proud to support the wonderful work they do to help local people with life-limiting illnesses. I was so impressed when I first visited the hospice and have been keen to be involved in fundraising events and to be a friend to the hospice in general.

It is such a beautiful and peaceful haven. The staff really are wonderful and totally committed to making Lewis-Manning a very special sanctuary for patients to find the care and positive support they really need.”

Actress hopes to make impression as PatronWe are delighted to announce that local actress and television celebrity Debra Stephenson, star of Bad Girls, Coronation Street and The Impressions Show, has become a Patron for the hospice.

New Recruit We are delighted to welcome Val Ennis to the team, as Sister, In-Patient Unit.

Val arrives with experience in most areas of nursing, including palliative care and has spent the last 23 years as District Nurse in the Poole and Bournemouth area. Val said, “I’m very excited about the opportunity and to be a part of the new Lewis-Manning Hospice.”

The One ShowThe One Show, featuring our patient Nikki was aired on BBC1 last month.

Nikki was invited up to the studio on the day of transmission to watch the live broadcast and also got to meet presenters Matt Baker and Alex Jones.

Go yellow for Hospice Awareness Month June is National Hospice Awareness Month, so once again we are appealing to the community to don their brightest sunshine yellow clothes throughout June to raise awareness and funds for the hospice.

Sara Sheppard, our Community Fundraiser said, “The colour yellow represents hope, memory and the hospice movement, so we thought that there was no better way to celebrate Hospice Awareness Month than to dig out your brightest sunshine colours and raise funds for our hospice.

“Some people go all out with face paints and wigs, and others are a bit more discreet choosing to accessorise with yellow scarves, jewellery, hair clips, and badges. We’ve even heard stories of people sponsoring their bosses to dress up as yellow characters like Homer Simpson and Bananaman. Last year, one of our patients, Elaine, even came to the hospice dressed as Big Bird from Sesame Street.” Elaine goes yellow for Hospice

Shop gets urban make-overTake a bit of inspiration from one of Bournemouth’s coolest student venues, add in a graffiti wall, some quirky up-cycling urban touches, and a soundtrack of local music, and what do you have? That’s right, a newly refurbished hospice shop!

Perhaps not the answer you might be expecting but that’s exactly what is happening to our shop in Winton with the help of former Bath University business graduate Louise Croft, 24,

who is bringing her creative and entrepreneurial flair to the role of Charity Shop Consultant for the hospice.

Following her graduation in 2013 Louise has followed a career path very much focused on the charity retail sector, selling donated clothing on-line, via shops and through a number of pop-up shops set up at university campuses up and down the country. More recently she worked with Julia’s House, setting-up a pop-up shop for them in Barclays House for a month and now Lewis-Manning hope to harness her business acumen and innovative style for its retail outlets.

Louise explains, “Although ultimately we want the shops to bring in more money, my remit is also about making a connection with the community and making each shop unique and specific to that area. The aim is to move away from a chain shop model and make them individual and full of personality, while still highlighting the Lewis-Manning brand.”

Louise’s first project is the shop in Winton, which shut for a week at the end of May to undergo an extensive refurbishment programme including new flooring, lights and fittings. However, as Louise explains, that is just the beginning of what she has

planned. “Winton has a very large student population, so we aim to target that market and reflect it in the shop interior. Think 60 Million Postcards in Bournemouth with a graffiti wall!

All the main work is being done by local businesses, while companies like RedTail have helped us bring in a graffiti artist to do some murals, as well as give us space to shoot a promo video.”

Louise has also been approached by Bournemouth & Poole College student, Rhianna Matthews, to help with window displays over the summer before she goes off to university to study Visual Merchandising. “Having Rhianna on board is brilliant and is a perfect example of working with the community in a way that benefits both parties. We get some wonderful window displays and Rhianna gets to boost her portfolio.”

The Winton shop had its Grand Opening on May 28th with live music from Chris Rogers, Cappella, Mother Ukers, Whitney Kate-Fall and Not Made In China, as well as food, drink, stylists and more.

Louise adds, “We want to embrace the vibrant local music scene. We will be playing music by local bands and artists rather than just having the radio on, so we want to encourage people to drop in their CDs.”

And where is next for a Mary Portas style makeover? Louise explains, “I will be most likely focusing on the shop in Poole High Street. This will be totally different to Winton as it’s a completely different area and demographic. However, it will be another complete renovation and no doubt will contain a few nice surprises.”

Due to the unacceptable care her beloved mother, the late Dame Dorothy Tutin OBE received in London during her last illness, Amanda began to concentrate her efforts on supporting older vulnerable people and has subsequently become renowned as a passionate campaigner for older people’s rights and for dignity and respect within care settings.

Amanda’s workshop was both highly interactive and thought-provoking, focusing on ways in which to ensure dignity of all those in care is preserved and promoted. Amanda also looked at ways in which staff can care for themselves and colleagues, covering a number of aspects including communication, personal care, pain and dignity, individuality and identity, valuing and motivating those who care and barriers to dignity, as well as the importance of relationships, including emotional and spiritual support. The day was also used to encourage ways to share good practice as well as looking at ways to improve care.

Amanda said, “The outcomes of the days are many on both a personal and professional level, but it helps focus the mind on the

ways that we can all strive to treat others with continued dignity and respect at all times.”

Coinciding with national Dying Matters Week, there were compelling opinions and arguments aired at the Lewis-Manning Hospice ‘End of Life’ debate, which took place recently at The Hallmark Hotel in Bournemouth.

Taking place on the same day that Lord Falconer’s controversial Assisted Dying Bill had its first reading in the House of Lords, Lewis-Manning CEO, Elizabeth, opened proceedings and introduced the impressive panel of speakers.

Supporting Lord Falconer’s Bill and leading the campaign for Dignity in Dying was Dame Jill Macleod-Clark, Professor of Nursing at Kings College London and University of Southampton, and Dr Scheffer who has experience as a previous chairman of a regional

Palliative Care Network and was a member of the working group for the development of the Department of Health End-Of-Life-Care strategy. Dignity in Dying advocates a change in the law on assisted dying.

They were joined on the panel by Robert Preston who is a former Whitehall civil servant and parliamentary official who has been Director of Living and Dying Well since its formation in 2010 and Reverend Canon Jane LLoyd, a Lewis-Manning Board Member and Poole Hospital Chaplain.

Dame Jill Macleod-Clark described Dignity in Dying’s attempts to make a change in the law and talked about how her professional experience as a nurse had influenced her belief that giving individuals the option of choice around assisted death is required. Dame Jill talked about the safe guarding rules in the proposed new law and discussed the differences in definition between assisted dying, euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Robert Preston opened the debate by outlining his opinion on dignity and highlighting Living and Dying Well’s views on safeguarding the current law, while Reverend Canon Jane LLoyd gave a balanced and compassionate view from her position as a chaplain.

The debate was chaired by Lewis-Manning Hospice Board member, Steve Harris, who is also the BBC Radio Solent Breakfast presenter. Steve encouraged comments from the engaged audience who discussed how their patients are living longer with symptoms, whether people actually had a choice and talked of professional experiences of palliative care.

Charity night leaves everyone starry eyed A night of performances from the likes of Madonna, Michael Bublé, Elvis, Dean Martin, Village People, Paul Carrack, The Darkness, Andrea Corr and Katherine Jenkins helped raise over £1,000 for both Lewis-Manning Hospice and Wessex Cancer Trust.

The ‘Stars In Their Eyes’ fundraising event, which was sponsored by Pure Klass Cleaning, was held at the Barrington Theatre in Ferndown with our new Patron, local actress and TV comedian Debra Stephenson, hosting the show that saw 16 year old Daisy Lapworth crowned the winner.

Daisy, a pupil at St Peter’s School in Bournemouth, dazzled the judges with her rendition of ‘Time To Say Goodbye’, which she performed as Katherine Jenkins. Daisy was one of nine acts who participated in the show and even Lewis-Manning had its very own representative, with Sara Johnson, our Community Fundraiser, bravely taking to the stage as Andrea Corr from Irish band The Corrs, despite being five months pregnant!

Care with hairApril saw the opening of a brand new hair salon at the hospice with the help of MWAH (Makeup Wigs And Hair) in Westbourne.

specialist, who has previously worked in film, TV and modelling, and has suffered twice from hair loss before the age of 30 due to cancer.

Simone said, “When I discovered the work of those at Lewis-Manning Hospice I was sincerely touched by everything they do. From my personal experiences I can say how important support can be. Help with what may seem the smallest things can make a huge difference. Considering this I felt determined to do whatever I could to support Lewis-Manning Hospice.”

Together MWAH and Lewis-Manning Hospice decided to create a salon inside the hospice which will focus on giving beauty therapy and advice to those struggling to cope with hair loss. To get the salon running Simone and MWAH have donated a clinically safe, wipe-clean chair for the salon along with an array of other equipment. Simone will also be providing luxurious branded Wella products alongside Moroccan treatment oils, shampoos and conditioners. MWAH will also continue to offer ongoing training for new and current nurses.

Centenary celebrations!

After 3 days of various celebrations with friends and family, Phyllis and her daughter Maureen delivered a fantastic £515 to the hospice. Make a will fortnight

Where there is a Will - its YOUR WAY! Make a Will FortnightIt is estimated that around half the population of England and Wales does not have a Will. It could be simply a question of not getting round to it, or there being difficult issues to address, or because of the assumption that the whole estate will pass to the right person without a will. This is not always the case even with the introduction of changes to the intestacy rules as a result of the inheritance and trustees Powers Bill having received Royal assent on 14th May.

It is particularly important for unmarried couples who are living together to make a Will. The surviving partner may receive a pension or lump sum death in service benefit, but this may be insufficient to meet their long-term needs.

WALK A MILE IN SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOES Sunday 21st September at 2pm, Bournemouth Gardens“You never really know someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes”

Join us for a 1 mile walk in footwear which you wouldn’t normally wear , something out of your normal comfort zone!

So look out your flippers, clogs, tap shoes, clown shoes, skis or stilettos (for the men) and have some fun in aid of the hospice.

Entry fee: £10 per adult, £5 per child (under 16).
