Beast Rampz Final Major Project Evaluation

When analysing my video there is good points and bad points in my opinion, overall I am happy with the outcome but there are obviously some general corrections that could have been made to make the video better.

First of all the storyline of the video was to basically connect with the audience and give them genuine knowledge about Beast Rampz skate park, using the local folks who visit Beast Rampz regularly was a good option because they’re the ones who know most about it and have the biggest impact on the skate park as their the customers just like the audience watching. When hearing over and reading through what has been said I wished I put more detail about the skate park, for example I could have mentioned the location and post cost for the facility which would make the viewer more interested if the location may have been close enough to visit. Also I could have included maybe more people into the video besides being just the 2 team riders (Leon/ Charlotte) I think including the manager or someone who interacts with the facility and is not involved with sports could have talked a word to the audience because this could have been found interesting knowing how the ramps are made etc…

Technical Quality:

I found that producing my final major project was in a way simple because it involves around my life style, so when filming and editing the film it was similar to what I usually do outside of college so I was already involved and knew what to do in terms of making a good skate park movie. I was also associated with a previous media student who studied AS film making so this gave me a benefit of camera techniques and the best angles to film from, also she let me borrow her camera equipment which is perfect for my type of movie this made my video perfect and unique to the rest of my class mates videos.

My filming techniques throughout the video like angles audio etc… the footage I took was unique towards anyone else’s filming because I had certain equipment than nobody else could get, for example I borrowed a slide gear cam stabiliser which I used to make smooth panning shots across the park. The quality of the footage was okay but could have been better… the camera I used was a Canon 550d which is a step down from the canon camera used at this college. Although I had a choice from a mix of lenses, my friend provided me with a Samyang 50mm fish eye lens which was great for different shots of scenery, also a X-grip camera holder worked great for when I was getting shots for the introduction which involved me walking into the skate park.

The images shown below are screenshots of the my final product, this includes the introductory scene where I was holding the x-grip with the camera attached, you can see the shadow which was a mistake and ruined the shot but also can show you how I gathered this shot. Also this shot worked great with the use of the Samyang fish eye lens as you can see from the surroundings.

In terms of composition oh how my film was put together I specifically like how the introduction shows a lot about the park involving mixed range of shots of the skate parks ramps and local extreme sport enthusiasts enjoying the facility. Then going onto deep reviewing of the park which involved 2 of the biggest local members who take time to represent Beast Ramps giving brief description on how Beast Ramps is great for beginner and advanced athletes which I think could really convince lots of other athletes around the UK to give Beast a visit.

Production Skills:

The production skills I originally acquired and the skills I gathered in the process of filming and editing have accelerated in terms of new techniques with the camera and unknown effects which could make the filmed footage look more appealing. In my earlier projects I already knew the basics of filming with an advanced camera so when it came to getting setup I had no problem to get on with collecting footage, the footage I got was in some clear with perfect exposure and angles, but in some quite grainy and dull which could have been improved on by shooting in a different area which included more light or adjusting the ISO so the camera automatically gained more light. In the second interview with Charlotte the shots were grainy which made it look poor quality.

Shadow which contains myself with the camera walking into beast Rampz.

Fish eye lens used to gather the surrounding of the facility, as you can see the ripple effect on the wall gives it a better effect than the usual lens.

Shot later changed to black and white to give and introductory feel.

The filming techniques I gathered in the process mostly relied on the new equipment I was using which I haven’t used in the past. The equipment was more technological and produced greater smoother shots which ultimately made my edit look more advanced and professional, for this I used a glide gear camera attachment that clips onto the camera I was currently using which was a Canon 550d and can be gently moved left or right producing a smoother greater shot.

The images above are screenshots from my final major project short film, the images seem very similar but if you look closely you can see that they gradually move. I used the glide gear to get this shot and it worked perfectly.

The techniques which I’ve gathered through the process of filming and editing has increased, with the help of the new gadgets I used for various shots have made my filming skills a lot better. The gadgets I used include of the glide gear, x-grip camera holder and a choice of 2 lenses; the original canon wide angle lens and the Samyang 50mm fisheye which worked well with specific shots. Editing the video was the most enjoyable part of the whole video, I already knew how to put clips together, speed up and slow down clips, making the picture black and white etc… all the novice essential parts of editing I gathered during the last college projects I did which included editing. With this new project I learnt other effects which I used to make the clips look more professional, for example tinting clips which were darker than others and made it hard to see. Making this film has definitely made me stronger with filming and editing.

Original Intentions:

Compared to my original thoughts which I wanted my edit to be, the media formats of my idea are basically the same as in my proposal form. My original intentions were to promote Beast Rampz by using local riders explain the pros of the facility which could influence people to try a new sport or to simply get Beast Rampz more business thus promoting it. My original idea was to help people understand what Beast Rampz is like and without a well-made video which explains Beast in depth I think it would have been hard for people around the UK, what didn’t happen which I wanted was that Beast could put the final video to their website which hasn’t been done yet.

I think that the final edit has met the target audience as planned, when watching the finished film now it’s easy to see what generation of people it’s specifically aimed at. On my proposal form I said that the film would be mostly aimed at people who are interested in extreme sports/ skate parks which is easy to notice when watching because the people who are being interviewed clearly explain what type of people currently visit the facility. I also suggested what gender would prefer to visit the park which was not aimed at a specific gender, I used a girl in the video (Charlotte) which shows the audience that girls can be into extreme sports just as much as boys and hopefully this will motivate many females to try Beast Rampz on a scooter or bike etc…

Overall I reckon that the video I produced went as planned and looked how I wanted it to end up as. There were a few things that I would have like to upgrade and change for example I had planned to have 4 people being interviewed which could have explained more about Beast rampz, also the final ending to the film which I wanted lots of people to be riding and doing different sports as a bang to the edit. But I didn’t have enough time to gather all these different amounts of footage, maybe if I scheduled my filming and editing time a little earlier I could have made this happen.

Time management and problem solving:

Scheduling was an important process when making my video because I needed to give myself enough time to film all the footage and edit the whole video including all the pre-production work. I scheduled 2 weeks for filming which in my opinion wasn’t exactly enough, I needed time to get to beast rampz and when the people featured in the video was available so managing time for this was harder than I originally expected. If I could re do my edit I would give myself more time to film and edit because the final outro was crucial and could affect my grade without it.

I used strategies such as social media sites to keep in contact with the people involved that way I could arrange dates to film the people who are being interviewed. Also I needed to schedule dates where I could use the camera+ equipment donated by Charlotte who was one of the main people in my video, this made it quite hard because I couldn’t shoot footage unless she came to Beast with me so days where I could have gone beast to collect the clips I need I couldn’t because I didn’t have my own equipment.

Weather wasn’t an issue when filming because Beast is indoors so no rain or other bad weather could be a problem when filming. Also another issue that could have occurred during the shooting time was transport, transport such as trains, busses and trams could be cancelled making it almost impossible to get to the required destination. This didn’t happen during filming so I had no problem on getting there as well as the rest of the crew who were making the film with me.

Target Audience:

The target audience for my video was basically for the people who enjoy extreme sports or are very interested; this could be from all ages and both genders. I’ve used a few different ways to express what audience the video is particularly aimed at. First the introduction is a clear view of the facility showing all the different sized ramps, rails and other skate able hardware. This is generally basic for who the video is targeted at just from the opening intro. How I shown the target audience of gender is through using Charlotte being a female featured in my video, this simply shows that beast Rampz isn’t just a place for males to visit but is also very appealing for a lot of girls as a varied amount of people both genders enjoy action sports. I hope that this video could influence a lot of girls to try a new sport e.g. scootering as there is not as much in the industry today, if my intentions are right having Charlotte explain what she does and how Beast motivates her to keep doing her scootering then other girls around the UK will find it very interesting and ultimately give it a try.

The audience of the video could interest people who aren’t involved with and action sport, I tried to make the video in a way that not only people interesting in skate parks and extreme sports but could appeal to them as an enjoyable video. I made a focus group on Facebook which involved people from my college who aren’t particularly interested in a certain sport but could find my video enjoyable to watch. They gave good points and bad points about my video, and what could be improved. Here’s one

The images are taken from my final edit on YouTube; these images are just a few of many which show the target audience using the skate park. As you can see there are a vary of different ramps and rails which could attract the audience, also the sports involved like BMX and Scootering is both shown in the images above.

The scooter is shown in this image to show that girls are also involved with scootering just as much as boys.

of the comments which came from a local class mate who gave an honest review of my video.

In my opinion the overall video fully meets the targeted audience as explained in the proposal I previously did before the making of the video. It shows gender, age and appeals to the people who watch the video just for enjoyment and don’t take part in such involved sports. The video is also helpful toward the adults who are looking for more information about the skate park, such as parents of kids who want to visit the park… the video explains more deeply about the facility which could make the parents consider visiting the park.

Conclusion:

In conclusion I think my video has turned out how I imagined it, there are a few things I would have liked to change or improve to make it up to the standards as planned. If I could re-do my whole video the things I would have changed, added or improved would be mainly the footage I shot. 1st I would have gave myself more time and productively visited Beast

The image to the left is a screenshot of the focus group I made including my video link and a reviewed comment. The comment suggests good and bad points like the use of camera techniques and equipment used e.g. the glide gear camera dolly made the video look more professional and worked well with the angles and shots taken from. He says that the only downfall was the duration of the video, I agree with this because at points the video gets boring and blags on which could bore the viewers, I could have improved on this by not having the interviews as long.

Rampz more often to gather the footage also I would have practised more with filming so that the clips which aren’t as good quality as the rest could be improved to make it look more appealing. 2nd I would plan to not make the video as not as long as it turned out to be, although it’s a documentary type video there are parts which I think are too long and could be found boring, I would avoid this by shortening or removing parts of the interviews because they seem to be the most boring of parts. I would add more footage of riding for example a vary of different sports to be involved other than scootering, this could also include different people taking parts in their interests to make Beast Rampz look more available to more sports. Overall I am happy with the finalised outcome of my video and I hope it reaches its potential and gains more business for Beast Rampz because that’s one of manty reasons I made the video.
