Exercise 1: Shade Basic Values 1. Draw two rows of five boxes (Figure 1). Each should be about 1 in (2.54 cm) square. 2. Label each column from 4B up to 4H. 3. Fill the top left box with your 4B pencil using the same pencil pressure you normally use for drawing. 4. Fill the remaining boxes in this row with 2B, HB, 2H, and 4H grades of pencils. 5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 in the second row with firm pencil pressure on each grade of pencil. Press as hard as possible, but avoid damaging the surface of your paper. Your shading with each grade should be as dark, smooth, and solid as possible without causing damage to your paper. Tip! For future reference, label each completed square in Exercise 1 with the pencil grade used to create it.

Caution!

When smooth shading is your goal, don’t apply a soft grade over a hard grade. Always apply a hard grade over a soft grade such as HB over 2B or 2H over HB, which will smooth and burnish the softer grade.

Fill in any white spots or gaps in the paper. Understanding the limitations of your paper and pencils combination is vital.

Exercise completed? Now you know the limitations of each grade of pencil – no need to use excessive pressure with the H grades again.

Light use will avoid damaging or indenting your paper. If you need a darker value, move up to the next softer grade.

Exercise 2: Shade Shapes with Various Values1. Create a patch of shading or

a shape using the darkest,

3.3.A1: Exercise Your Drawing Hand

Tip!

Before you begin Exercise 2, refer to 3.3.R2 Shading Skills Beyond Beginner to examine drawings created with each value or range of values.

Tip!

When shading dark values, hold your pencil more upright to use heavy pressure without risking a broken lead.

most solid black you possibly can.

Begin shading with the flat face of a chisel point (Figure 2). If the flat face of the pencil doesn’t fill the tooth, rotate your pencil and shade again with its edge.

2. Create a shape or small drawing that features a gradation from dark to middle values.

Just concentrate on producing various tones in any way that suits you; don’t worry about the neatness of your drawing.

3. Create a shape or small drawing that features a full range of dark to light values.

4. Create a shape or small drawing that features a gradation with middle to light values.

5. Create a shape or small drawing that features gradation from light to super-light values.

3.3.A1: Exercise Your Drawing Hand

As an Aside

Remember: you are creating your own world and your rules reign supreme. Don’t be bound by the rules or advice of other artists – including me. Allow yourself the freedom to create intuitively and break free of working closely from reference photos.

Challenge!

Try blending a section of each of the five projects in this section to see what effects you can create (Figures 3 to 5). Don’t despair if nothing happens – what works for me may not work for you. And conversely, you might achieve effects that completely elude me.

Exercise 3: Draw a FeatherThe purpose of this activity is to document your current drawing skills so you can track your progress over the weeks to come.

1. Draw a white feather totally from memory – make it any size you want.

As an Aside

No matter what level you attain, you will always find drawings that exceed your own abilities. We all begin at the same point – we just take our own time to reach our full potential. Just relax and enjoy yourself!
