1 SAFETYINSTRUCTIONS

1.1 Intended use

MENKARserieslevelindicatorsaresuitableforcontinuousmeasurementandmonitoringofthelevelofaliquidinopenorclosedcontainersasrequired.

Theliquidlevelinthecontainertobemonitoredistransmittedbyafloatina1:1ratioasananaloguevalue.Themeasurementisindependentoftheoperatingpressure.Theinstru-mentsarenotedfortheir robustconstruction,trouble-freeusageandgoodreadability,evenfromfurtheraway.

Variousmagneticallyoperatedcontactunitsforcontrolandregulationprocesses(acous-ticandopticalsignals,motorandvalvecontrollersorsimilar)areavailableasaccessories.Apartfromrequiringacertainminimumdistance,thecontactscanbefittedinanyorderandinanynumber.

Therobustdesignmeansitcanevenbeusedintoughconditions.Varioustypesofprocessconnectionsandfloatsmeetthediverseconditionsfoundacrossindustry.

3 INSTALLATIONANDPRINCIPLEOFOPERATION

3.1 Installation notes

Information!

All instruments are carefully checked for proper functionality before shipment.

Immediately on receipt, check the outer packing carefully for damage or signs of improper handling. Report any damage to the carrier and your local sales staff. In such cases, a description of the damage, the type and the serial number of the instrument should be given.

Unpack the instrument carefully to avoid damage.

Check the delivery for completeness on the basis of the delivery note and the match between the valve and the float.

Check the nameplate to ensure that the delivered level indicator meets with your order.

3.2 Installation conditions

Thefollowingpointsmustbeobservedwheninstallingtheinstrument.

» TheMENKARlevelindicatormustbemountedverticallyonthetank. » Itmustbeensuredthatanymagneticfieldsgeneratedbyotherinstrumentsdonotaffectthemeasurements.

» Selectscrewsandgaskets(tobeprovidedbythecustomer)thatmeetthepressurespecificationsoftheconnectionflangeandtheoperatingpressure.

» Theprocessconnections(flanges)mustfit,i.e.theymustbecentredandparallelandproperlyboltedontopreventanyunnecessarymechanicalstressbeingappliedtotheinstallation.

» Thetankmustbefreeofanycontamination.Theuseofshut-offelementsisrecom-mendede.g.taps,valves,etc.,installedbetweentankandlevelindicator,sothatthelevelindicatorcanbecleanedindependentlyofthetank.Thedrainplug(ifordered)inthebottomflangeshouldalsobereplacedwithadraintapfittedwithadrainpipe.

Thefollowingpointsshouldbenotedwheninstallingtheinstrumentsinthepipeline:

» Removethetransportlockfromthevalve. » Beforeinstallation,checkthatthefloatinthevalvecanmovefreelywithoutjamming.

3.3 Installation instructions » Theeffectivepressureoftheinstallation(themaximumpressureallowedbythepres-surereliefvalve)mustneverexceedthemaximumallowablepressurePSindicatedonthenameplate.

» Theusermustensurethatthematerials(guidetube,floats,seals,etc.)thatcomeintocontactwiththefluidarecompatiblewiththisfluidandmeettheageingcharacter-isticsofthefluidandthemeasurementenvironment.Theappropriateinformationiseithergiveninthemanualorlistedinthecontractunderownspecifications.

» Theexternalpressure(Pext)mustequaltheatmosphericpressure(Patm).

3.4 Principle of operation

TheMENKARlevelindicatorsoperatewithasystemofcommunicatingtubesorthefloatprinciple:

Themediumentersfromthetankthroughthelowerconnectingtubeinthestandpipe.Thefloatlocatedinthestandpipethenfloatsintheliquid,itsheight(seeFig.1)correspondingdirectlytothelevelinthetank.

Eachmovementofthefloat(whenthelevelchanges)istransmittedtothemagneticflap-persbyamagnetinsertedinthefloat(rotationfromwhitetored)-othercoloursonre-quest-theredsideindicatingthelevel.

Asanoption,contactdevicesareavailablethatarealsoactu-atedbythefloat.

Themagnetic transmissionsystemworkswithoutcontact inallcases.

3.5 Displayoftheactuallevel

Thefloatisequippedwitharingsystemmadeofpermanentmagnetsinordertotransmittheliquidlevel.

Fordesignreasons,theminimumlevelinthemeasuringtubeisindicatedbytheaxisofthelowerlateralconnectingflange,i.e.thezeropointformsthecentrelineofthelowerconnectingflange.

Intheeventofamajorchangeintheproductdensityspecifiedintheorder,orwhenin-stallinganotherfloat,thescaleontheMENKARmayneedtobeadjustedtoensureacor-rectreading.Insuchacase,pleasecontactMECONGmbH.

3.6 Availablefloats

Allmagneticlevelindicatorsareequippedwithafloat.Asstandard,thefloatissuppliedinstainlesssteel,butcanalsobeorderedintitanium,Hastelloy,PVC-C,PVC-U,PPorPVDF.Thefloatmusthavesufficientbuoyancy,sotheprocessconditionsshouldbeconsideredwhenmakingtheselection.

Thefollowinginformationisrequiredforchoosingtherightfloat: » Medium » Density » Operatingpressure » Operatingtemperature

Thelowestselectabledensityis380kg/m³,dependingontheprocessconditions.Inthecaseofaggressiveliquids,thefloatcanalsobeorderedwithalining.Examplesinclude:E-CTFE,PFAandETFE.

3.7 Changeofprocessconditions

IftheuserwishestousetheMENKARtomeasureanotherproduct,thefollowingpointsshouldbeconsidered:

» ContactMECONGmbHforinformationaboutthecompatibilityofinstrumentsandproducts,especiallyiftheinstrumentistobeusedinhazardousareas.

» Whereapplicable,ensurethattherequirementsofthePressureEquipmentDirective2014/68/EUareadheredto.

» Theimmersiondepthofthefloatincreaseswithdecreasingdensityoftheproduct.Thisdepthalsodependsonthemodeloffloatandthematerialused(stainlesssteelortitanium).

3.8 ConfigurationMENKARlevelindicatorsaremanufacturedinlengthsofupto5,000mm,dependingonthetype,andwithasplitdesignforlongerlengthsinordertofacilitatetransport.Thecon-nectionismadeusingflanges.Thefollowingpointsmustbeobservedtakingaccountoftheparticularoperatingdataandlocalconditions: » Typeoffitting » Typeanddesignofinstrument » Length/measuringrange » Scaletype(%,volumeorheightunits):Forscalesinvolumeunits,theusermustprovideanoutflowtable.Thescalecanalsoberetrofittedandinstalledbytheuser.Forrectangularandcylindricalcontainerswithflatorcurvedbases,inahorizontalorverticalposition,thescalecanbecalculatedatthefactoryinunitsofvolume(atreimbursementofcost).Forthis,thegeometricdimensionsofthecontainermustbespecified.

» Gatevalve:Itisadvisabletoprovideagatevalveintheconnectingpipes,sothatthelevelindicatorcanbecleaned,removedorre-installed.

6 Contactors

Youwillreceiveelectricalsignalsbymountingoneormoremagneticswitchesonthelevelindicator.Withseveralswitchesyoucan,forexample,outputapumpcontrolcommand(pumpon/off)and/oranalarm(high/low).Levelswitchesforgeneraluseaswellasswitchesforhazardousareascanbesupplied.

Important!

The power supply must be switched off before wiring the instrument.

The density of the liquid can change due to changing pressure / temper-ature. In this case, the float can indicate a different level. In the case of intrinsically safe systems, it may be necessary to provide electrical galvanic isolation.

The process temperature of the switches may depend on the isolation options of the level indicator.

Operating manual:1. Mount the switch in the correct position.2. Move the float from the bottom to the top and back.3. Check the function of the switch.4. If necessary, change the connections of the switch if another function

is required.5. Connect the switch to the mains.

The integrated cables must be protected against pulling, twisting and mechanical damage.

Overvoltageprotectionforreedswitch:

Capacitiveloads(inthecaseofextremelylongcableguides)andlamploadsmaycausehighstartingcurrents,whichcangreatlyreducethelifeoftheswitchcontactswhenclos-ing. It is recommendedthatanovervoltageprotectioncircuit isused inserieswiththeswitchandascloseaspossibletotheswitch.

Fornormal signal circuits, thecapacity in thecable canbeneglectedbecause severalhundredmetresofcablemustbeconnectedtotheswitchtocausedamage.

7 SERVICE

7.1 Storage

Storetheinstrumentinadryanddust-freeplace.Keepawayfromdirectcontinuoussunandheat.Avoidexternalloadsbeingplacedontheinstrument.

Thepermissiblestoragetemperaturesforstandard instrumentswithelectricalcompo-nentsare-40°Cto+70°C.

7.2 Maintenance

Attention!

Appropriate safety precautions must be taken when removing the instru-ment from the pipeline. As a rule, new seals must be used when they are being reinstalled in the pipeline!

7.3 Returningtheinstrumenttothemanufacturer

Duetocarefulmanufacturingprocessesandfinalchecksontheinstrument,theMENKAR is expected to operatewithout any troublewhere both installation and operation are carriedoutinaccordancewiththeseinstructions
