Section 1 Comprehension I (15 marks)

Read the passage and answer the questions in complete sentences.

Hollywood: Fighting to Survive

The movie business makes big money. In the US alone, box office receipts ( 票 房 收 入 ) totalled over $11 billion last year, while movie markets like China continue to boom (暴漲). It may

be a surprise to learn, then, that the movie business feels like it’s fighting for its life.

There are several reasons why the heads of movie studios ( 電 影 製 作 公 司 ) are growing concerned (擔心的). One of them is the rise of online piracy (網上盜版), which means people downloading movies for free illegally (非法地) rather than paying for a cinema ticket. As a result,

movie studios are not making as much money from their movies as they should be. “It’s not just

about very rich people like me losing money,” says James Creswell, the head of Epic Pictures, “but

about the whole industry suffering, including the millions of people working behind the scenes. Fundamentally (基本上), downloading movies without paying is illegal. That’s reason enough not to do it, but as well as that the picture and sound quality of these downloads is very poor. They are seeing a compromised (妥協的) version of the film, not the real thing.”

The other key concern for the movie business is the rise of television. This may sound like old

news – after all, movie studios were worried about television in the 1950s. However, more

recently, TV shows like House of Cards and Game of Thrones have enjoyed unparalleled popularity (無與倫比的人氣). According to TV critic (評論家) Tod Johnson, “The most creative work is

being done in the field of television. I simply don’t go to the cinema anymore, and that’s

why. People want deep stories told over a long period of time. Cinemas cannot offer that to people.

That is why they are failing to bring people in.”

Movie studios have tried many gimmicks (噱頭) to bring people back to the cinemas, such as

3D films and IMAX screens, but they are struggling ( 處 於 困 境 ) to make a difference. 3D films,

for example, are expensive and require a special pair of glasses, even though they are often visually

stunning (視覺震撼), which has put people off. “There is nothing like the grandeur of

cinema,” says James Creswell, “from the smell of the popcorn to the sheer size ( 十 足 的 大 小 ) of

the screen. I hope the movie business flourishes (興旺) so that people can continue to have

amazing experiences in cinemas.”

In spite of (儘管) huge revenues (收入), then, the movie business is still worried. What will

the future hold? It is difficult to tell, not least because new technologies may be waiting around the corner (即將來臨) which will leave both television and cinema in the dust (將…埋在歷史的灰塵中)...

Section 2 Comprehension II (6 marks)

The Computer Club at your school has produced a leaflet advising students on how to stay safe when

using the Internet. Give short answers to the following questions.

ONLINE SAFETY TIPS

The Internet is a great tool for communicating and helping us with school work. However,

using the Internet also carries certain risks which we need to be aware of. Below are a few

tips to remember when you are using the Internet at school or at home.

• Cyber bullying (網絡欺凌): this is becoming increasingly more common. As social networking (社交網絡) sites allow you to be anonymous (匿名的), it is much easier

for people to bully others and much harder to identify a bully. If you or one of your

friends is experiencing cyber-bullying, you must tell a teacher or parent. The same

goes for talking to people on social networking sites. If it’s not somebody you know

in real life, be careful about how much (個人信息) you reveal.

• Passwords: most people choose a password for their online accounts that they find

easy to remember. However, you should also try to choose a password which cannot

be easily guessed (猜測) by another person. Try to include a mixture (混合) of

letters and numbers and don’t use any obvious (明顯的) words like your own name,

or ‘password’. Thousands of people have their email or social network accounts ((被駭客)竊取) every year.

• (小心垃圾郵件): if you receive an unexpected email asking for

your personal details, it’s most likely a scam – even if it looks genuine.

• Use anti-virus (防毒) software: Viruses can be very harmful (有害的) to your

computer and the data you have stored on there. Using anti-virus software will

protect you from them. Remember not to click on any links from unknown sources (來源).

• Remember to sign out: when using communal computers (公共電腦) like the ones

we have at school, remember to log out of your accounts when you have finished the computer, otherwise the next person using that computer could gain access to (獲權限取得) your data.

1. What type of text is this? (1 mark)
