Environment is ………….
Why do you need to be concerned about theenvironment ?

Environment may be defined asThe aggregate of external conditions that
influences the life of an individual in a
population- (specifically man)
Physical Environment – Natural
Environment – Air, Water, Soil, Nature
Cultural Environment – Social and
economic Environment

The Earth is like a Space Shuttle!
Earth is travelling at very
high speed around the sun
There are resources on earth
for us to use during our
journey - water, air, soil,
minerals, plants and animals
But we can not get anything
from outside, except the sun‟s
light energy

Resources Anything that is obtained from the physical
Environment to meet human needs is a resource.
A „Material‟ becomes a resource only if it is usedfor human needs
For a material to become a resource
People should know how to extract and use it
– human ingenuity
It should be economically viable to use it
-- economics
It should be acceptable to the people
– cultural beliefs

We have to be concerned, because of:
Environmental Degradation-- Processes that deplete or destroy a region‟s resourcebase Loss of productive land - due to housing, roads, reservoirs
Water-logging, salinization- due to extensive cultivation withoutproper drainage
Flooding, Soil erosion, Loss of habitats for birds and animals- due toDe-forestation
Land desertification - due to Overgrazing
Depletion of soil nutrients – due to cultivation without proper soilmanagement

And….. Environmental Pollution - Changes to the
environment that can affect health, survival or
activities of humans or other forms of life in an
undesirable way
Water Pollution – domestic,
industrial
Air Pollution – industrial
transport
Noise – industrial, traffic
Soil Pollution – municipal
solid waste, hazardous
waste

Causes of Environmental Degradation
Over population
Export of Resources
Uncontrolled Common Properties
- „Tragedy of the Commons‟

Environmental Issues:
Local Issues – Degradation, pollution of
local environment
Regional Issues – Acid Rain, River and
Marine Pollution
Global Issues – Global Warming,
Depletion of Ozone Layer

Concerns about the impact of Human Activities
on the Natural Environment have stimulated
a new area of Engineering – known as“Environmental Engineering”.
Environmental Engineering
Environmental Engineers combine their knowledge of the natural, social and physical sciences to
analyze and improve the interaction between
society, technology and the environment.
