Pass / Fail Considerations ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
In order to satisfy the requirements for each module, students must pass both the exam/theory component (comprising of one of more written exams, as detailed above) and the compulsory coursework components (as detailed in the following module descriptions).
The pass mark for both the theory and coursework components is 40%. A theory mark below 40% (minimum 37%) can be compensated using the coursework assessment mark, at the discretion of the examiners. The following rules apply:
• If the theory mark is 37, 38 or 39%, AND you have a satisfactory coursework mark such that your overall aggregate mark is 40% or higher, a ‘PASS’ is awarded.
• If the theory mark is BELOW 37%, an ‘EXAM FAIL’ is awarded (reported as FE in the transcript), even if your final aggregate mark including coursework is over 40%.

General Examinations Information
Coursework ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Students are required to attend all compulsory elements (e.g. laboratory classes / workshops) and submit all specified coursework. Reasons for absence from a compulsory element or failure to submit coursework must be directly communicated to the module coordinator and must be accompanied by a valid explanation (e.g. medical certificates or other relevant documentation), normally within 3 days; the validity of any explanation will be at the discretion of the module co-ordinator. The absence of a valid explanation will be considered as grounds for failure of the coursework component. Even with supporting documentation, a student who attends less than 80% of the specified compulsory elements or who submits less than 80% of the specified coursework normally will be deemed to have failed the coursework component of the module and will not have the opportunity to retake coursework in the current academic year. Where there are genuine extenuating circumstances that prevent the fulfilment of the above requirements, these will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Students with a coursework FAIL (reported as FC in the transcript) due to unsatisfactory attendance will be asked to repeat the module the following year.
Students with a coursework FAIL but a good attendance record may, at the discretion of the Board of Examiners, be able to complete additional coursework over the summer period. In some cases, the coursework component must be repeated in the following year. In the case of Physiology 1 and 2, a practical examination will be offered during the supplementary examinations in August.
Resit Theory Examinations ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Students who fail one or more theory examinations must be available for the resit examinations in August. The University’s Exams Office, and not the School of Pharmacy, is responsible for scheduling of all exams.
Although coursework is a component of initial modular examinations, and thus can be used to compensate a theory mark ≥ 37%, if a resit theory examination is required then the pass/fail decision is based only on the results of the resit theory examination i.e. no coursework compensation is offered and the minimum PASS mark in the resit theory examination is 40%. Due to university policy, however, the final mark recorded in the transcript will be inclusive of coursework.
If a Level 1 student repeats and passes any assessed component of a module, then the maximum mark that can be used for classification purposes is 40%. However, the actual score will be recorded in the transcript and the result recorded as Pass with Honours restricted (Ph).
9
Contribution of Level 1 to MPharm Degree ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
For those students who entered the MPharm in the academic year 2009/10 or after, the contribution from each year to the final MPharm degree mark will be as follows:
Level 1 5%
Level 2 5%
Level 3 45%
Level 4 45%
Reporting of Exam Results on QSIS ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Students access their exam results using the QSIS system, via QOL. Exam results are reported in a table format, similar to that presented in Table 1. In addition to the module details, the table presents the 'Grade (i.e. overall module mark), the EBN (the 'Exam Board Note', and a list of 'Elements Failed'. Table 1 illustrates the range of reporting codes used.
Table 1. Representative exam reporting table
The EBN codes include:
• P - Pass (i.e. module passed) • F - Fail (i.e. module failed) • PH - Pass with Honours Restriction • ABS - Absent (for either exam or compulsory coursework components) • ABSM - Absent with a valid medical certificate
A 'Pass with Honours Restriction' means the module has been passed and the achieved mark is recorded on QSIS. However, the mark is capped at 40% for degree classification purposes. This restriction applies to students who have previously failed the exam and/or coursework components and have passed on subsequent resit.
10
Where the module has been failed ('F' reported as the EBN code), the failed elements are reported in the 'Elements Failed' column:
• C - Coursework • E - Exam • CE - Coursework & Exam
Please note that a student can have an overall 'Grade' of greater than 40%, but still fail as a result of scoring less than 40% in an individual element. This is the case for the Physicochemical and Pharmaceutics examples in Table 1, despite the individual elements marks not being reported. This is noted using an asterisk.
Progression to Level 2 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Students may not carry a theory fail in any of the Level 1 modules into Level 2. Also, no module with outstanding coursework can be carried into Level 2. Students who fail any Level 1 modules after resit examinations in August will not proceed to Level 2 and are required to repeat examinations/coursework the following year for the failed modules, if permitted to do so by the Exam board, or be asked to withdraw from the University.
Extenuating Circumstances (General Regulations) ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
When a student believes that his/her performance may be adversely affected by extenuating circumstances in advance of an examination or deadline for returning assessed work, he/she should seek advice e.g. from his/her doctor, University Occupational Health Service, Adviser of studies or the relevant Students’ Union officer(s), on the options open to him/her. These options might include withdrawal, deferral of the examination, applying for an extension to the deadline for submitting coursework or applying for a waiver to any penalty imposed for late submission. However, the decision on whether or not to attempt the examination or submit the assessed coursework, and the consequences of that decision, shall remain the sole responsibility of the student in question.
Full details of University Regulations are available on-line at http://www.qub.ac.uk/calendar

How to correctly complete exam booklets ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
To facilitate straightforward handling of examination booklets by Pharmacy staff, students are required to complete the booklets as exemplified below. In particular, please note the requirement to include section and question numbers. Students must place their completed examination booklets, along with any multiple choice answer sheets, into the sealable yellow envelopes provided at the exam venue. It is also important that, if instructed, students also place the examination question paper in this envelope. Once all materials have been placed in the envelope, the student must seal it before leaving the exam venue. Note that it is the student’s sole responsibility to ensure that all examination booklets and multiple choice answer sheets are completed correctly and placed in the sealable envelopes and that the envelopes are then correctly sealed. The School of Pharmacy will not accept responsibility for mislaid examination booklets or multiple choice answer sheets.

Ratification of Marks ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
The External Examiners Board will be held after the second semester examinations in June. A Board of Internal Examiners will meet after the first semester examinations and assessments and will arrive at a provisional module mark for each student. Boards of Examiners will consider provisional first semester module marks when they meet in the summer in the presence of the External Examiners. They will then agree confirmed marks for first and second semester modules (they have the discretion to revise provisional first semester marks upwards in the summer, but may not lower them).
Provisional first semester marks will be released to students through the Students Records Office in the normal way (early February), but clearly marked as provisional. Second semester marks and confirmed first semester marks will be released to students through the Students Records Office after the Board of Examiners meets in June.
