Form shape defined by function

Function “Licht Machen”

To clad the function of “licht machen” into a beautiful form using

precious materials and workmanship has been taught to us by the

bauhaus school of Germany and it’s intellectual forebearers in the

Arts and Crafts movements in various European countries as well as

here in America.

The light bulb is the starting point for function in lighting. We try to

use only the best, mainly light bulbs made by Osram of Munich,

Germany. But there is more: dimmability, electrical conductivity,

focussing and reflective functionality, or sometimes just physical

beauty of the lamp or lighting fixture as a decorative work of art.

A form becomes truly beautiful when it is reduced to it’s functional

necessities. Many of our form designs were developed in this way

and over the course of time have become trademarks.

A lamp or lighting fixture for us is not only a decorative accessory or

even a decorative work of art, but first and foremost a functional

product. “Licht machen” (to make light) is our first responsibility

otherwise finished and then lacquered to the highest standard possi-

ble. We do not skimp on the material. Paul likes to say, “If we sold

Holtkötter was founded by Schlossermeister Franz

Holtkötter in 1964 in the town of Bad Waldliesborn

located in the heart of Westphalia, Germany. Since that

time and under his guidance, we have produced lighting

fixtures and lamps using true manu-facturing methods

that are steeped in the German “Handwerkstradition”

(Craft tradition).

Over time the company grew to encompass three loca-

tions. The toolmaking, milling, stamping, and the

various finishing departments are still located in Bad

Waldliesborn, while the lacquering, assembly, packing

and shipping departments are located in the neighboring

town of Liesborn.

For the American market, the assembly, distribution, and

the corresponding administration departments were first

established in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1983 on the

banks of the Mississippi River and expanded in South

Saint Paul in 1995 and again in 2005 with the opening of

The idea for the swing-arm lamp originated in Goose Bay,

Labrador during World War II.

Back then, Sergeant George Hansen spent some

dark winters as Army staff in a weather

station. Hansen wanted a lamp that

would allow him to read

in bed.

Using his ingenuity, he

created the first swing-arm lamp out of simple materials,

such as wire and copper tubing. Since the retail introduction

of swing-arm sconces in the 1940’s, they have remained

George Hansen’s favorite.

Today we use high-quality materials like brass and glass to

transform them into our distinct swing-arm sconces.

Pin-up Kits


As we age, natural physical changes of the human eye

diminish our visual abilities including our ability to read.

The cornea becomes more opaque, the lens absorbs more light, and the pupil

diameter decreases, resulting in a reduction in retinal illuminance. Increased fat

deposits in the cornea and lens lead to an increase in light scattering inside the eye,

making it more difficult for the eye to recognize the visual images. The lens

yellows and absorbs a higher amount of blue wavelengths. Last but not least,

weaker ciliary muscles and an increased rigidity and hardening of the lens reduce

our ability to focus and to adjust to different light levels easily.

Holtkötter has initiated and supported research at the University of Colorado at

Boulder to study and develop the scientific basis of lighting for the aging eye and

to research how good lighting can mitigate the effects of the natural physical

changes that we all are subjected to as time passes. Some of the results of this

study are being incorporated into this series of table, chairside and floor reading

lamps.

The reduction in retinal illuminance requires a light level of more than 100 foot-

candles for optimal reading performance. The 75-Watt or 100-Watt Halogen light

bulb by Osram, as well as the shape and construction of the inside of the reflector,

allow for a light level in excess of 100 footcandles. A matte glass diffuser and a

reflector that focuses the light only on the reading material will reduce glare and

scattering. Adjustable dimming controls and the adjustability of the physical

reflector location allow the light levels to be set at the optimal position, reducing

the need for the eye to adjust to different light levels.

Point Dimming

Turn the lamp on with a single click of the P1 dimmer.

Soft On

The lamp comes on low and continues to brighten to full brightness. This allows the eye to adjust toa gradual increase in light.

Soft / Delayed Off

Turn the lamp off with a single click of the P1 dimmer. The lamp will dim to 60% brightness of thecurrent setting, remaining briefly at that level to allow you to exit the room. Then the lamp graduallyturns itself off. This “soft” off provides a few moments of light after turning the lamp off, rather thanimmediate darkness as is the case with other switches.

Dimming Cycle

Press and hold the P1 dimmer to adjust the lamp to the perfect light level for any situation. Thedimmer will cycle through all dimming levels. When the lamp achieves the light level of your choice,release the P1 dimmer.

Tilt Switch

A safety measure is provided with the “Dimm System Punkt 1”. In the event that the lamp is tippedover, the tilt switch cuts off the power to the lamp.

The word “chandelier” originates from the Latin word “candelabrum”,

a branched candle holder that is suspended from the ceiling.

Today, of course, most chandeliers are electric light holders.

Originally, they were simply shaped, made out of wood or iron

and were used in Anglo-Saxon churches even before the turn of

the first millennium. Brass as a base material for chandeliers

was first used in the late Middle Ages.

During the eighteenth century, Dutch and Flemish

craftsmen became known for their brass chandelier design and

manufacture. British companies were also important suppliers

of chandeliers for early American churches or homes. The

Dutch, Flemish and British started a tradition that is still being continued around the

world today. Here at Holtkötter, that same tradition is being continued with

particular care and attention to detail.

In the following section, we are proud to present the widest variety of traditional

colonial chandeliers available today with respect to style, size and choice of finish.

Antique Brass

Our antique brass finish isapplied in the following way:First, the brass parts areantiqued, then they are brushedand highlighted, and finally alasting lacquer is applied topreserve the finish.

Fume

The finish Fume tries to capturethe aged appearance of thebrass chandeliers in the daysbefore they were lacquered.

Since they were not lacquered,all chandeliers had to be polish-ed with a brass cleaner on aregular basis. Over time, mostpeople would only clean thehighlights of the chandelier, leav-ing the less accessable parts ofthe chandelier to itself. Theunpolished parts would take onthe antique finish over time.

Hand-Brushed Old Bronze

Hand Brushed Old bronze isone of the most exquisite andexpensive finishes crafted byHoltkötter.

All the parts are brushed by handbefore the bronze finish isapplied. After “bronzing” the rawparts, each part is polished witha special brass brush. Portions ofeach brushed part are highlight-ed before applying a speciallaquer to enhance and preservethis beautiful finish.

Pewter

We have a wide variety of fix-tures available in Pewter, from asmall five light chandelier to largeArchitectural sizes. The Pewterfinish fits very well with manydifferent fashionable decoratingcolors.

Spotlights were first introduced in the 1930’s for use in the movies and in

stage productions. Since then, they have been incorporated into many

lighting applications adding drama, beauty and ambience to a

variety of decors.

With a design as compact as otherwise found only

in low-voltage lighting designs, this spectacular bulb, the Osram

Halopar 16, completes the Holtkötter Spotlights with sparkle and

shine, while using standard in-line voltage. This specialized bulb allows

sleek designs and broadens the spectrum of applications for this particular

series.

Holtkötter Spotlights exemplify the premise of the Bauhaus movement: that form
