PASTOR’S PEN: INTERGENERATIONAL MINISTRY

It is a core, biblical, conviction of mine that Christ-exalting ministries are intergenerational ministries. These ministries purposefully work hard at mingling broad age groups together and work even harder against the subtle drift towards age segregation. Apart from simple obedience to the Scriptures, there are also several practical reasons why I believe our church must strive to be an intergenerational place of ministry. Over the next few months, I want to highlight these reasons for you. Reason #1 is perhaps the most important. It is the responsibility of the older generations to teach the younger. It is the parents in Deuteronomy 6 that are supposed to lead their homes in such a way that the Lord is exalted and love for the Lord is taught. In Psalm 71:18, the Psalmist writes, "So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come." The fo-cus here is on leaving a legacy of faith that has been deposited to "all those who come." In 2 Timothy, the Apostle Paul gives instructions that the gospel message, the "good depos-it", is to be entrusted to faithful men. It is to be handed down. Similarly in Titus, Paul in-structs that the older men, and older women, in the church are to teach the younger men and women how to live out the implications of the gospel in their lives. They are to follow Paul's example and work for the "knowledge of faith that accords with godliness." (Titus 1:1) As we live out our mission to glorify God by being disciple making disciples, we must cele-brate the great diversity of age that the Lord has given our church. Yes, sometimes it can be distracting. Yes, sometimes it can be noisy. However, as we provide an environment for our children to learn about the Lord and to sing praises to him, and even dance in the aisles, we are giving them a great gift. But far beyond simply providing this environment we need to model a passionate relationship with the Lord for them. I am so grateful for so many of our older saints who pay attention to my daughters and speak to them. You are making deposits into their souls that will last a lifetime. Some of my personal favorite memories from the church I grew up in were the older saints who literally pinched my cheeks! The pinching wasn't that great, but their care for me and love for the Lord certainly was. As we seek to be intergenerational, it is vital that each of us have eyes to those in our midst and take time to speak to them. Go and declare the Lord's goodness to the next generation this Sunday! Do it every Sunday! Do it every time we gather. A life well spent is one spent investing in others and loving them with the love of Jesus Christ. For the Glory and Fame of Jesus, Pastor Timothy Clothier

STORIES OF GRACE Members of our church family share their stories of Grace.

Dottie Sollenberger

I grew up in a Christian home. We lived on a farm and I helped do lots of things on the farm. I especially liked going with my grandfather to bring in the cows. He taught me lots of things. I became a Christian at seven years of age. We attended a church in the country for Sunday school and church. I had the privilege of going to church camp where I met a dear lifelong friend, to a lot of youth meetings, and youth conferences which were a blessing. I began teaching children in Sunday school when I was 16.

I was married on January 17, 1954 to a wonderful man, Grove Sollenberger. We had thirty-four and one half good years together. On August 16, 1988, the Lord took Grove home to heaven. John is my son, Kristin is my daughter-in law, and my three precious granddaughters are: Jordan, Erin, and Addison. We lived many years in Wayne Heights and in 2005, John and Kristin and I sold our homes and built a home together on land on Marsh Road. I have my own apartment. We came as a family to Grace Brethren Church in 1970. We were invited to the church by a good friend and neighbor whose children played with our son, John. She taught second grade Sunday school at the church and John was in second grade. We began to attend regularly and in 1971, I became her substitute for sec-ond grade. This led me to become the regular teacher and I am still teaching second grade plus this class has been expanded to include grades one through grade three. When you teach, you get to know the chil-dren and their family and the children become precious to you instead of just children that attend church and you do not get to know them personally. I get to know and love them more. I also have taught Vacation Bible School, Child Evangelism Fellowship Good News Clubs, helped with SMM (girl’s ministry), continue to help in Joy El Ministry’s Released Time Bible Classes, helped in the Waynesboro Welfare Office, work in the Child Evangelism Fellowship Office, 606 Family Gathering kitchen help, and other ministries. One of the ministries closest to my heart that I am involved in is the Samaritan Purse Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Project. For the last several years, we have sent 100 shoe boxes filled with personal hy-giene items, toys, school supplies, etc. We hope to send more this year. If you would like to help with this project, please give empty shoe boxes to me and I will wrap them with Christmas wrapping paper and have them ready to fill in October. See me if you would like to give supplies to fill these boxes. We had a group for a long time called Keenages for those over 55 years of age which met once a month for a program and a meal. I had the privilege of serving on this committee to help plan the program. We had good speakers, good food, and a good time together. I also serve on the Flower/Decorating Committee and the Hospitality Committee and enjoy working with these committees. One of my verses is Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Here is a recipe that I think is good:

RECIPE FOR LIFE Take equal parts of faith and courage

Mix with a sense of humor Sprinkle with a few tears

Add a large helping of kindness Bake in a good natured oven

And dust with laughter Remove all indulgence

And pity of self. Serve generously.

PARISH NURSE NEWS Nancy Musselman, R.N.

It’s now the time of year to get outside and get that fresh air and sunshine. But we can’t rush into doing our summer routine and chores. Start out gently. I plan on sitting on the back porch and enjoying the warm weather. Then I’ll work up to the garden work. We have all had a slow winter. Start your activities slowly to prevent muscle strain. Physical activity is necessary to im-prove our energy levels, our muscle strength, our concentration, our appearance and body image, decreases health problems and injury, and just make us feel good. Remember to use good body mechanics when lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying. If it takes two trips to carry your groceries indoors, then take two trips. Also remember to protect your skin and eyes. Use suntan lotion – especially on your children and little ones. Wear a hat or sunglasses to protect your eyes. Teach your children street safety - how to watch for traffic, how to deal with animals, how to dress properly for activities and weather, and how to use (or not use) their modern technology. Please take the brochures/papers located on the Parish Nurse Bulletin Board for added information.

ANNUAL CE AND CHURCH PICNIC JULY 12

Our Annual Picnic will be held at the Tick Ridge Property. Look for more information in the church bulletin and the July issue of the Letters of Grace.

Copies are on the foyer table. Take one and pray each day for all missionaries. Eddie and Linda Mensinger, retired missionaries to Central African Republic write about their short term missions trip to Cameroon: they felt their classes went well. Besides the clas-ses, Eddie also preached while he was there. Please pray for the new Cameroon Bible Institute that just opened. This is the first formal training school for pastors. They had a wonderful time with their daughter, Suzie and her family in Dijon, France. They arrived in Chicago on April 27, spent time at Winona Lake, and visiting with Eddie’s family in Michigan before going home to Oregon. Lois Wilson, is an active retired missionary to the Central African Republic. Students from the Bata Bible Institute write to their sponsors who help with the Timothy Project and Lois trans-lates them (49 letters) from Sango to English. This keeps Lois from forgetting Sango. She teaches Released Time Classes. This is her 11th year. She is also active in her church’s chil-dren’s ministry.
