Dear Mr ampMrs Swier
As you are aware well water samples were obtained from your residence by Commission staff on June 4 June 15 and July 20 1982 The analysisperfonned on these samples was to determine if volatile organic chemicals may be affecting the quality of your well water-
The samples obtained were analyzed in our water laboratory by gaschromatographmass spectrometer Our testing revealed the presence of volashytile organic chemicals in your water supply
We point out that samples obtained on June 4 and July 20 1982 were analyzed while the June 15 1982 samples were not analyzed due to our twoshyweek allowable laboratory retention time being exceeded
For the samples analyzed the levels of volatile organics found in yourwell water expressed in parts per billion (ppb) are tabulated as follows
Benzene Xylene Toluene
June f 45 ppb 183 ppb not detected July 20 37 ppb 144 ppb 3 ppb
37 ppb 147 ppb 4 ppb
After receiving the results from the June 4 1982 sampling we rec0111118nded verbally that you not consume your well water until we could conf irm our earlier results Although the level s of contaminants appear to have decreased someshywhat we continue to reconmend you not consume your well water

There is a possibility the source of the organics in your well may be the result of road oiling in your area The organics found are conmon constituents of petroleum products The oil treatment applied to Tibbetts Road to control dust may be contributing in part or in full to your waterquality problem
In addition your well casing is situated in a drainage swale which appears to direct runoff from a portion of Tibbetts Road to your well This runoff may penetrate permeable soil around the casing and in the trench constructed for your water line It may eventually reach and mix with the ground water in the well
To eliminate this possibility we reconrnend that you regrade the front portion of your driveway and the area around your well so that the road runshyoff is redirected away from your well
There are other possible remedies to your problem you may wish to invesshytigate If you wish to pursue these options please contact David J Allain or myself at 271-3503
