Letter from the Principal...

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that we are now at the midpoint of another school year as the second semester officially kicked off on Tuesday, Jan. 20th. It is an honor to serve as the principal at Royal View Elementary because of our outstanding students, staff and parental support. The first half of the school year marked a phenomenal start for our students and we look forward to just as many amazing events and activities during the remaining months of the school year.

Thank you to committee chair Barb Davis and all of her volunteers who made our first annual Jump Yard fundraiser – Jump-a-palooza – such an outstanding event for our students. An ongoing focus at Royal View has been to provide our students with experiences that impact Social and Emotional Learning, while engaging our parents to be involved in these activities. The Jump Yard fundraiser was a perfect event to help us achieve those goals, all while enabling our students to make an additional connection to the school as a positive influence in their lives.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Royal View PTA for their support and generosity over the past three years in our technological endeavor affectionately known as “Operation iPad.” Using a combination of principal’s fund and fundraising dollars to go along with a very generous contribution by the Royal View PTA, we have now provided our students with a set of iPads with matching portable charging carts for each of the four grade levels at our building. There are numerous benefits associated with mobile computing devices such as the iPad as it is a powerful tool that can positively impact education at all levels. Content and material is available for all subject areas, offered in a unique way that ultimately engages each student at their individual level of learning. Thank you again to our PTA for making this goal a reality!

Starting on Monday and all during the week of February 2nd, our PTA will again be sponsoring the ever popular Donuts with Dad program at Royal View. Forms have been sent home with our students and should be returned by Thursday, Jan. 29th so we can adequately plan for the number of guests who will attend. Royal View’s Donuts with Dad program is open to all dads, grandpas or other special people in the lives of our Royal View students. Donuts with Dads takes place in the Royal View cafeteria each morning at 8 a.m. Guests for students with last names A through E will be here on Monday, Feb. 2nd, last names F through K on Tuesday, Feb. 3rd, last names L through R on Wednesday, Feb. 4th and last names S through Z on Thursday, Feb. 5th.

Thank you again for your continued support of the North Royalton Schools and of our students here at Royal View Elementary!

Sincerely,

Kirk Pavelich

PTA President’s Letter...

Dear Royal View Families, Welcome back to school, everyone! I hope you all had an enjoyable break. Now it’s time to jump back into PTA mode. We have many events starting up right now, so if you haven’t had the opportunity to get involved, now is the perfect time! First up is our Jump Yard Fundraiser. It’s coming up this weekend – Sunday, January 18 at 6 pm. Our hardworking chairperson, Barb Davis, has assembled fabulous prizes that you won’t want to miss. See you at the Jump Yard!! Our next event, Donuts with Dads, will take place the first week in February. We still need a few more volunteers, so if you have an hour in the morning when you could help out, contact our chairperson Lesil Brihn at [email protected]. Also coming up in February, our physical education teacher, Mrs. Dylong, will be coordinating the Jump Rope for Heart program for each of the classes. This is another great opportunity to work directly with the students and help out a good cause. If you are interested in volunteering for a morning or afternoon session or if you have any questions about any of our PTA events or volunteer opportunities, you can email me at [email protected]. Our Nominating Committee has formed and is seeking nominations for the Royal View PTA Executive Board for the 2015-16 school year. If you are interested in one of the positions or know someone who is, contact our Nominating Committee Chairperson Lesil Brihn at [email protected]. The Nominating Committee will present their slate of officers at the February meeting. Elections will take place at the March meeting. I always enjoy seeing our PTA volunteers around the school. Whether it is helping a class, organizing an event, or beautifying the hallways, your time and dedication to Royal View is greatly appreciated. Let’s get poppin’ with the PTA! Nellie Wislocki Royal View PTA President

Library News

Now that the new year has started, second graders are excited to be selecting more Library books each week. Third and fourth graders all received an individual OverDrive barcode label. The label was likely placed on p. 119 on your child's agenda planner. This allows your student to download digital library books from home. The collection can be accessed through the 'Media Center and Learning Tools' tab (after Our School) on the school website. If you have questions, or would like an individual number for your first or second grader, please phone Mrs. West or email me at [email protected]. Check out our collection with your child. And remember, there's no day like a snow day to read!

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Mr. Pavelich

Welcome to the first PTA meeting of 2015!

Thank you for the iPads! PTA made a generous donation to help with the purchase of an additional set, and in combination with Principal’s Funds, we have ordered the final cart and set so each grade level will now have their own set to use.

The new cart is much more streamlined and easy to maneuver throughout the building.

Our tech department will get these loaded with all the apps we have, and PTA Core Curriculum Money has also been used by grade levels to load these tablets with additional purchased apps.

Thank you for everything you did to make this possible!!!

I will try and get a grade level list of apps used in the classrooms.

Royal Lunches started this week for individual classrooms and will continue throughout the month. It’s a nicer, special lunch with classmates in a quiet and pleasant setting, and a good opportunity to discuss manners and etiquette.

Royal View’s 1st Annual Jump-a-Palooza fundraiser is this coming Sunday, 1/18 from 6-8pm at the Jump Yard. No school on Monday, so you can go and have fun and not have to worry about school the next day!

Cost is $10/child, parents free.

There are over 40 raffle baskets full of awesome donations from the community.

I have attended this event in the past with my son at Valley Vista and it really is a lot of fun for the kids and also for the parents who have the chance to win a variety of great prizes.

State testing—we were all gearing up for the 3rd grade PARCC tests in Reading and Math.

PARCC is the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers.

Over break, politicians in Ohio decided that instead of 3rd

graders across the state taking the PARCC test in reading, they would again take the OAA so that scores could be compared from the fall administration until now.

The second administration of the OAA for third grade reading will be on Thursday, April 23

rd.

The PARCC tests will still take place in the 4th grade for Reading and Math and the 3

rd

grade for Math.

PARCC tests are taken completely on-line and in a series of units.

Week of Feb. 23rd

—Grade 4 Reading, section 1, 75 minutes; section 2 90 minutes

Week of March 2nd

—Grade 4 Reading, section 3, 60 minutes, Grade 4 Social Studies, 75 minutes

Week of March 9th—Grade 3 Math, section 1, 75 minutes, section 2, 75 minutes

TEACHER REPRESENTATIVE REPORT – Mrs. Morris
