Most of our encounters have been pleasant, but some difficult. I gave a presentation years ago comparing suspension bridges to relationships showing that both exist successfully with a combination of tension and pressure. So, I will put a little pressure on you this time around. Realtors speak of “curb appeal” – the way your home looks from the street. Coining a new phrase: Hospitality begins at the curb. Please be hospitable to your neighbors and trim your trees and landscaping so that it leaves the sidewalk wide open for foot traffic. My husband and I participated in a series of planning meetings with the City of Round Rock. I want to talk about one of the issues discussed: Storm drainage. Yes, we have very well designed storm drainage and should not have flooding issues, but there is more than just meeting our needs for flood control. Everything that leaves our property has an effect downstream. From an article on the city website: Many of our contaminated waterways eventually flow into our drinking water supplies, which has spawned the phrase "If you dump it, you drink it!" More on this topic in the article about storm drainage. Reminder: Please clean up after your pets. We have received information that some of you walk your dogs in the greenbelt and other common areas or even on neighbor’s property but do not clean up behind them. Even in your own yards, please properly dispose of animal waste. More on this in the article about storm drainage. Whether you are driving or walking, the intersection of Highway 3406 and Plantation is a potentially dangerous intersection. Please observe the traffic light AND notice pedestrians in the crosswalk especially school children. Also, keep it to 30 MPH in the neighborhood. We hope when you are ready to buy, you will still reside in Wood Glen! This is the time of the year when most Americans consider the things they are thankful for and I want to share one thing I noticed when I first moved into Wood Glen that made me thankful. We moved in the middle of June, but the first day of school, I pulled in the neighborhood behind the bus from the high school. Four teens of four different races stepped off the bus and walked up the sidewalk talking, laughing and trading places as they walked. Every time I remember watching them, I am thankful to live here! Wood GlenSanta Claus is Coming to Wood Glen:

Cocoa With SantaCome and tell Santa what you want

for Christmas, have you picture taken on his lap and enjoy hot cocoa and cookies. The event will be held on Saturday, December 14 from 2:00 to 4:00. Plan to arrive a little early and see him arrive in style in a vintage touring convertible (think Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) at the Wood Glen Amenity Center.

Julie Kerr with Kerr Photography will be there again with only a $10.00 sitting fee for her services. This is an optional service that we are providing and you are welcome to take your own photos.

Wood Glen holiday decorating Contest

It'salittleearly, buthere'sahead'sup:We know that a many of you really get into the holiday spirit with decorating the exterior

of your home. It's fun, festive and puts everyone in the holiday mood. Like last year, we will be rewarding you industrious folks for your efforts, creativity and energy with a Holiday Decorating Contest.

There are no real decorating rules, we just don't want a loved one falling off the roof (and it has happened!). Hint: perhaps no loud music or flashing lights so bright that it keeps the rest of your neighbors awake at night.

Judging will be done mid December by the Social Committee and we will award gift certificates from Home Depot AND have a sign to post in your front yard to recognize your efforts.

1st Place: $75, 2nd Place: $50, 3rdPlace: $25.

Winners will be announced via a Wood Glen Email and a following Newsletter. A shout out will be given to Honorable Mentions as well.

Contact Cynthia Maguire at [email protected] for any questions.

Is Back Pain Handicapping Your Golf Game?

The torque generated in the golf swing windup and follow-through places a lot of stress on the lumbar spine. Back injuries are one of the most common ailments found in frequent golfers.

We look forward to helping youcreate your perfect home!

It's time to clean out those attics, garages and closets and get rid of your unappreciated treasures that someone else may covet! Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 7th from 8:00 am to noon for the Neighborhood Fall Garage Sale. Once again, we will be holding it with Hidden Glen, making it a huge event! Signage will be placed at the entrances of the subdivisions as well as throughout the neighborhood. In addition, there will be a listing of all the participating homes with a map available at the entrances on the morning of the garage sale.

Our sponsor again is Kim Perez with J.B. Goodwin Realtors, who is also a resident and active volunteer in our neighborhood. Please email her at [email protected] by Wednesday, November 4, so that she can include you on the participation list. Please be sure to include your address and a few words describing any specialty items that you may want to highlight (e.g. furniture, baby clothes, etc). Aside from the participant list/maps, Kim will also be sponsoring advertisements in the newspaper.

Garage sales can be a great way to get rid of clutter — and earn a little extra cash. Follow these tips for a successful sale.

If it’s really junk, don’t sell it. Decide what’s worth selling and what’s not. If it’s really garbage, then throw it away. Broken appliances, for example, should be tossed. (Know where a nearby electrical outlet

is, in case a customer wants to make sure something works.)Price your goods. Lay out everything that you plan to sell, and

attach prices with removable stickers. Remember, garage sales are supposed to be bargains, so try to be objective as you set prices. Assign simple prices to your goods: 50 cents, 3 for $1, $5, $10, etc.

Create an organized display. Lay out your items by category, and display neatly so customers don’t have to dig through boxes. Whether you use tables or plywood supported by horses, allow plenty of room around the tables for browsing.

Use Retail Techniques. To get top dollar for clothing, ensure it is clean and wrinkle free. Hang it if possible.

Stock up on bags and newspapers. People who buy many small items will appreciate a bag to carry their goods. Newspapers are handy for wrapping fragile items.

Manage your money. Make a trip to the bank to get ample change for your cashbox. Throughout the sale, keep a close eye on your cash; never leave the cashbox unattended. Or, better yet, use a fanny pack. It’s smart to have one person who manages the money throughout the day, keeping a tally of what was purchased and for how much. Keep a calculator nearby.

Don’t keep unwanted items. Donate the remaining stuff or sell it to a resale shop.

Get ready for the Fall Garage Sale!

Storm drainage: WhatWeCanDoToMakeaDifference

Since storm drains do not flow into wastewater treatment plants, the water flows into the nearest river, lake, stream or wetland untreated. Most of us know not to dump paint, chemicals, used motor oil, etc., but there are other things we can dispose of properly to do our part to protect our precious water resources.

Pet waste left on the ground will wash into creeks and lakes the next time it rains, contributing harmful bacteria, parasites and viruses to our waterways. So it's important to clean up after your pets whether their waste is in your backyard or while you are out on a walk. The waste can be flushed down the toilet or wrapped in a plastic bag and disposed of with normal trash.

Grass clippings and other materials dumped or blown into the street to eventually be washed down the storm drains during the next rain can clog our storm drains to cause flooding before they deteriorate. Dumping or storing in the greenbelt is not only a violation of Wood Glen C&R regarding common properties, but can also be polluting our streams.

Section 319 of the Clean Water Act is the federal law that regulates nonpoint source pollution. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality regulates it at the state level. Cities have their programs – for information from Round Rock: http://www.roundrocktexas.gov/home/index.asp?page=335

Let’s do our part for clean water!
