This is the time of year when folks want to give impressive gifts but since some of those folks don’t want to pay for those gifts, park your cars inside your garage or at least keep them locked. Per the advice posted at many retail centers, hide valuables and lock the doors. Also, make sure your bicycles, etc. are securely stored out of sight. We have had some theft from unlocked cars already this year so let’s all at least not make it easy for thieves. We have wonderful police protection here in Round Rock: If you have an instance of theft or break in, call the Round Rock Police Department 218-5500 or of course, call 911 if you have an emergency situation. If you missed Oktoberfest, you really missed a great event. Keep an eye out for announcements for future social events and make plans to come out and meet your neighbors! Cocoa with Santa is next….so check out the information and come out for a good time! The hike and bike trails through the greenbelt are NOT for motorized vehicles of any kind with the logical exception being a motorized wheelchair. Please keep your motorcycles on the streets, not the sidewalks or hike and bike trails. If you enjoy mud racing or three wheeling, please enjoy elsewhere so that we can all enjoy the hike and bike trails for their intended use. Also, regarding the hike and bike trails and greenbelt in general: There are wild animals out there. A couple of wild hogs have been sighted and we are working with the RR Parks and Recreation to remove them. There is at least one cougar that ranges through on occasion and there are coyotes along with the less dangerous wildlife. So, enjoy but be aware, take the dog, go in groups, make enough noise that animals will move away from you: Be safe! Some of you have removed the fence between your yard and the greenbelt so you could enjoy the greenbelt more. I might suggest that you re-install a fence with gaps between the pickets or perhaps metal estate style fencing that you can see through. Chain link fencing is prohibited as perimeter fencing. As with any change to your house or yard that is visible from the outside a change to your fence needs approval from the Modifications Committee. Please keep your fences looking nice along with the exterior of your house and your yard. I have noticed that many flowerbeds are full of weeds and have no mulch. This is a good time of the year to get rid of the weeds, put down the mulch and make your plans for stunning landscaping come spring. Remember, the yard of the month competition starts again in the spring!! While I am on the topic of fences, we have an ongoing project regarding the rock wall along Highway 3406. Before we spend lots of money to replace it per some inspectors, we are trying to make sure we make the decisions and take the action that is best for all of Wood Glen. Please don’t hesitate to communicate with me…and consider getting involved – there are always more volunteer opportunities than there are volunteers. Yours, Donna Tucker P.S. Save the date!Second Annual Wood Glen Wine Tasting

Due to public demand and the excellent response we had last year, we had to have a repeat!

Mark your calendars for February 20th for the above event. We will start at 7:00 pm with casual sipping of assorted wines and around 7:45 move on to the more serious stuff. This year's theme will be on the Napa and Sonoma Valleys of California.

Once again, Byron Caffey, a local wine expert who regularly holds tastings and teaches classes at The Grapevine Market will guide us through the wines of these regions.

There will be a nominal fee of $7.50 per person. As this event requires some planning to purchase enough wine, reservations will need to made ahead of time. You may email Cynthia Maguire at [email protected] to reserve your space. We will also sell tickets in late January at the amenity center: time and date to be determined.

Location of the fabulous event is to be determined as well. If you would be interested in hosting please contact Cynthia at 657-4400.

Finally, if you would like to bring an appetizer to share, that would be most welcome. We had some very delicious delicacies last year!

Cheers!

Wood Glen Holiday Decorating Contest

We know that a many of you really get into the holiday spirit with decorating the exterior of your home. It's fun, festive and puts everyone in the holiday mood. Like last year, we will be rewarding you industrious folks for your efforts, creativity and energy with a Holiday Decorating Contest.

There are no real decorating rules, we just don't want a loved one falling off the roof (and it has happened!). Hint: perhaps no loud music or flashing lights so bright that it keeps the rest of your neighbors awake at night.

Judging will be done mid December by the Social Committee and we will award gift certificates from Home Depot AND have a sign to post in your front yard to recognize your efforts.

Santa Claus is Coming to Wood Glen:

Saturday December 14th 2:00 to 4:00Come and tell Santa what you want for Christmas, have you

picture taken on his lap and enjoy hot cocoa and cookies. Plan to arrive on time to see Santa arrive in style in a vintage tour convertible (think Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) at the Wood Glen Amenity Center.

The Round Rock Fire Department will be escorting Santa to the event in one of their firetrucks and will be on hand for the first part of the event to answer questions and let the kiddos take a look at the vehicle. In addition, we plan to do a small tour of the neighborhood with Santa prior to arriving at the amenity center. The planned route starting at the gate house: Down Plantation to Falkirk to Berwick to Chatelle to Henley and then to Plantation to amenity center. Be on the lookout!

ALSO ADDED THIS YEAR: Santa’s Workshop: Kiddos can make their own holiday

ornaments Round Rock Community Choir dressed in Dickinson apparel

with caroling of old time holiday favorites at 3:00.

1st Place: $75, 2nd Place: $50, 3rdPlace: $25.

Winners will be announced via a Wood Glen Email and a following Newsletter. A shout out will be given to Honorable Mentions as well. Contact Cynthia Maguire at [email protected] for any questions.

Keep Warm with a Ceiling Fan!

Most people only think of ceiling fans as a way to keep cool in the summer, and use of a ceiling fan in winter would seem a bit strange. But, on the contrary, your ceiling fan can actually help keep you warmer and reduce your heating bill in the winter. Remember, warm air is lighter than cool air, and rises to the ceiling. Setting the reverse switch on the ceiling fan for an upward airflow (clockwise) will force the warm air at the ceiling down the walls, gently recirculating the air to provide even, comfortable heat throughout the room. This allows you to reduce the heater setting while still keeping your room comfortably warm. Using a low speed setting will produce adequate circulation without creating drafts. Most ceiling fans use only as much energy as a 100-watt light bulb, and can lower heating costs up to 10% by reducing the HVAC work load. And, better heat circulation will also help to combat the problem of condensation on the windows that some homes experience in the wintertime.

Christmas is...

something different to everyone. What is it to you?We invite you to celebrate with us this year.
