Letter from Julie S. Lee, Principal
Happy New Year 2020 Highlanders!
January is a fast month with teachers and parents encouraging students to “finish
strong” in their 1st semester courses. Students are working with their teachers on
test preparation for final exams, receiving individualized tutoring for key concepts/
knowledge and others are staying after school for Homework Help in the library to
finish incomplete assignments necessary to boost their overall semester grade. The
Groovy Shoes theme this year was “Shoe fari” using safari and jungle animal
costumes which made for a fun event against North Central in the Spokane Arena.
To carry forward our unity and school spirit, we are embracing another fun rivalry
at the Stinky Singlet wrestling event against North Central which is “in
our house” on Wednesday, January 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the SPHS main
gymnasium. Our students and families will rally on our scrappy and swift
wrestlers. Join us in the fun by wearing your favorite Groovy Shoes t-shirt or green
and gold gear!
February begins the course registration process for the 2020-2021 school year.
Our counselors, teachers and administrators are messaging to Highlanders the
importance of maximizing their high school experience by looking at a wide range
of courses and co-curricular opportunities we offer at Shadle Park. Through
English classes, the counselors will review the graduation requirements and course
registration process. During the advisory period on Mondays, Advisors will help
students identify their passions, interests and aptitudes, develop goals towards
their personal pathway AND select their classes for next year.
Parents, guardians and other adult mentors are important contributors to this
process to help students solidify their personal pathway and complete the course
registration process. Student centered conferences are scheduled for
February 11– 14 and family members are strongly encouraged to attend. At
Shadle Park, we changed “student led” to mean “student centered”
conferences. With this slight change, the purpose of conferences is for students
and parents to walk away feeling heard, feeling informed, and feeling supported by
the grade level advisor. Furthermore, it is an opportunity to provide grade level
specific content and context that is developmentally appropriate to ensure our
students are on a trajectory to be successful beyond high school. Families will also
have an opportunity to meet with any teacher they choose during our late night for
conferences which is Tuesday, February 11 3:00 – 7:30 p.m. in the main gym/
commons. Check out more details about conferences within this newsletter.
We appreciate our families and the strong partnerships we have with each of you. The Shadle Park Staff and I wish you an abundantly positive 2020!
Go Highlanders!

The FAFSA: How and Why Families of Seniors need to complete the FAFSA to know what federal grants may be available for their post-secondary planning. FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and helps students who want to go to trade and vocational schools in addition to 2 and 4 year colleges and universities. This is a valuable resource when trying to figure out how to fund your career plan after graduation. Please contact Mrs. Eberhardt if you need help applying for federal student aid. The first step in completing federal student aid is for parent and student to complete their FSA ID at the following website: fsaid.ed.gov. Once this is done, students and parents can go to studentaid.gov to complete the FAFSA. These documents are needed to complete the FAFSA:
• Your Social Security Number or Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
• Your 2018 federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned. (Note: You may be able to transfer your federal tax return information into your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.)
• Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
• Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
• An FSA ID to sign electronically.

NEWS FROM DECA
On Friday, December 6, 2019, 45 Shadle DECA members competed at our area competition at SFCC. Members competed in role play events as individuals and teams and made presentations on prepared topics. “As an integral part of the classroom curriculum, DECA’s industry-validated competitive events are aligned with the National Curriculum Standards in the career clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism. DECA’s flagship evaluation process involves students in both a written component such as an exam or report and an interactive component with an industry professional serving as a judge. DECA’s competitive events directly contribute to every student being college and career ready when they graduate from high school” All competitors did an excellent job and it was a “Great day to be a Highlander”! The Highlander Hut also supports our marketing/DECA program and is open before school and during both lunches. You may also purchase our Shadle clothing online through the school online store and then pick up items at Shadle. The Bagpiper’s Bistro is also open in the mornings and at lunch. Warm up on the cold days with lattes, hot chocolate and apple cider! Prepaid cards may be purchased for your sons and daughters. College & Career Opportunities A variety of Career Center information and
opportunities (like the internship Olivia Perkins
participated in—see article above) for high school
students can be found by going to this link (updated
regularly):

HIGHLANDERS IN THE NEWS Congratulations to Shadle Park senior Olivia Perkins who was recently
recognized by Washington State Governor Jay Inslee during his State of the
State speech. Olivia completed a Summer
2019 internship with Wagstaff as part of
the Production and Manufacturing
Academy to get exposure to hands-on
welding. She wants to create and sell her
own metal artwork. Greater Spokane
Incorporated paired with the Academy &
made this career-connected opportunity a
reality. Olivia took an hour-and-a-half bus ride — each way — and then walked
a mile and a half — each way — just to attend class. Because of her efforts, she
received a full scholarship to Spokane Community College and will become a
professional welder because of her academy experience. We are so proud of
you, Olivia!
